So this whole thread is based off what "a rep told me..." ?

People here are way too trusting.

I wouldn't even trust a rep if they told me the sky was blue.

For next-day pickup reservations do you have to go through the same contract selection process, or can you specify device only or make no specification and just tell them device only when you pick up the phone? Or if forced to select a plan, etc., could I tell them to change it to device only when I pick up the phone without being on the hook for any activation or phone plan from VZ..

As I recall from last year it wasn't a reservation, it was an online buy with pickup in store. So you can't make changes once you get there cause you already paid. You can cancel but all phones are returned open box so you can't cancel and buy the same phone. It's how they avoid resellers doing that very trick

----------

Does anyone know how this would work if I already ordered online using an upgrade? I have the general "October" delivery estimate so would love to be able to just reserve for in store pickup. Would I be able to reserve and then cancel the previous order and get my upgrade back right away?

If you order before you cancel you'll have to pay full price if they do last years web purchase system. Because your upgrade was used by the first order.

----------

My order is still processing and likely will be for quite a while considering I wasn't able to order until Saturday afternoon.

Can I reserve a phone before canceling? I don't want to risk canceling without being guaranteed a reservation.

You'll have to see once the system goes up if it's a reservation or actual purchase. The former yes but then you need to cancel to get your upgrade, the latter you'll have to cancel so you can complete the process.

As you said you really do need to be fast, and luck helps too. I tried it at least 6 or 7 nights last year at the right time and never saw any stock available near me.

Be sure to use the Apple Store App instead of the website. I have had good luck getting hard to find iPhones/ iPads for Apple Store pickup at night, using the app.

Are you sure? Unless the reservations for in-store next day pickup changed since the iPhone 4S launch. I reserved a black iPhone 4S using my upgrade eligibility and picked it up next day. Decided I wanted wanted white, so reserved one a few days later at full or early upgrade price. I don't believe that my credit card was charged. It was treated as a swap at the Apple store. Easy as that!

No you cannot. If it's the same as last year you can only purchase, not exchange

----------

You can do it both on the apple website or app.
Suggest you turn on express checkout and have your city/zip code already entered before X pm

Then about 5 minutes before X pm, keep refreshing the window where it lists the nearest stores and availabilities. Once it hits X pm or shortly after, the status next to each store will turn green and say "available" if it has stock.

That's how I remember doing it last year

As I was in line this morning waiting for the non-existant Sunday delivery, the rep who said nothing was left did say that starting Monday evening there would be availability posted for each store's next day shipment and that people would be able to reserve a phone online, so it won't be necessary to stand outside the store each morning.

Has anyone else been told the same thing? Does anyone know if Apple will likely receive new stock on the Monday after launch...or will it be Tuesday before any new phones are received?

I called my local Apple store a few hours ago, and they told me to go online at 11 pm and order one for in-store pickup. Not sure where 11 pm came from, but I will try it. Going for slate gray 5S.

My apple store told me (take with grain of salt) that if you purchased in an apple store that they would let you exchange. But if you bought from a carrier or anywhere else they would not let you exchange. Again who knows if this is the truth or not.

They did this last year. It starts at 10pm your local time zone (last year it was that time). It is not hard at all to get a phone b.c not a lot of people seem to do it.

They did it with the iPhone 5 and the new Ipads last year.

By "rep" I meant the Apple store employee (i.e., a representative of Apple) who was the one informing people who had lined up outside the store that there would be no deliveries of phones today. He did speak with a high degree of confidence...even though I challenged him on if he was really sure there were no phones coming (since I was first in line I wasn't going to just accept what he said and walk away). He was quite sure and said that he had been told this about the reservations. That is the FACT of what I was told and by who.

Now I agree that it may or may not have been worth anything....people are notoriously ill informed. I have no doubt that he believed it to be true, but I can't say for certain it is....we will only find out tomorrow at 10pm. Personally, I will probably still go to my local store before 9am tomorrow just to see what comes in (the store is close to where I work...not going way out of my way). I figure that if reservations do start tomorrow night, that will be the last time for a while it's worth going to the store.

Bottom line, YMMV! I just wanted to report what I was told to see if anyone else is hearing the same thing. It's also why I came to MacRumors to report this, rather than to "MacFacts" or I suppose to be completely accurate, "iPhone5sFacts" to do so!

I have a question about this -

I have an existing pre order for the 5S from Apple (Line 1). I have multiple lines on my account and do not want to cancel my pre order just yet.

Let's say I buy the phone using another line (line 2). The phone would be bought full price. Once I get to the apple store can I return the phone for Line 2 and then buy it immediately using my upgrade for Line 1? I would of course have cancelled my pre order, freeing up my upgrade eligibility.

Oh and to the other poster who said asked about reserving a phone on the line with the pre-order... If you are in the apple store app it won't let you buy another one on that line at any price... Although that may just be because I have my outstanding order from Apple on that line, you might have better luck if you pre ordered on your carriers site

My question is can you order the phone for in-store pickup tonight, or does that start tomorrow night?

Probably going to just have to wait and find out. Last year it wasn't until Monday night.

My guess is it'd be the same deal as it depends on what stock came in during the day.

Of course we'll also have the people with their panties in a wad when a shipment arrives on Monday and isn't doled out to customers immediately but instead is held for Tuesday distribution via the Monday night reservations.

As posted above - if it's a game for you, enjoy the chase. If it's a stressor, sit back and chill for a couple weeks. They'll make more.

So the only thing to do is exchange is going in or call every morning? I don't understand how some one can go in and exchange a phone if all the phones would get reserved at 10 pm?

For the 4S, they simply set aside a phone online and you completed the purchase in the store. Last year, you completed the purchase online and simply picked it up at the store. That effectively closed the back door way of getting an unlocked phone, since they didn't do device-only sales through the online reservation system.

This year the T-Mobile non-contract devices ought to be unlocked when purchased straight from Apple, but since they also work on AT&T (and T-Mobile probably got the smallest allocation from Apple) they may be hard to find.

----------

Even though I'm a T-mobile customer, I have been thinking about trying to get a Verizon "device-only" phone, so that it has maximum re-sale flexibility.

Per my earlier post, I think that if it works the way it did last year, the T-Mobile phones will be the hardest to get. After all, if purchased at full price from Apple they should be unlocked, and they'll also work on AT&T. It won't be possible to buy AT&T or Verizon models device-only if you are eligible for any sort of subsidy (even partial) from either of those carriers, so AT&T buyers looking for unlocked phones will also go for the T-Mobile version.

I can't answer that sorry. Last year there was no option to select that said you're buying to exchange. Also, you cannot exchange a black phone for a white phone. They will only exchange color for color. To change colors you need to return your phone and process as a return, and purchase the color as new. Again, this is from my experience last year.

I originally got white and they would not allow me to simply exchange for black. What I had to do was return the white, had them reset my upgrade, went phone less for a couple days until I successfully purchased one online for next day pickup. Also, when I went to pick up, I opened in the store to ensure no scratches. However, the first box was chipped, and they went to get another. 2nd box also chipped and they came out with a 3rd. By the way these were actual new boxes not the replacement boxes. Now, don't know if I got lucky and they happened to have extra black phones, or if they used those 2nd and 3rd boxes that were reserved for someone else.

This is how i ended up getting my iphone 5 last year. Went on the apple website around 10pm. They had sprint 16gb slate so i ordered it. Went in the next day and skipped the line and walked out 5 minutes later with my phone. Waited 6 hours at sprint on friday for them to tell me they received no gold phones at all so went home with just a reserve for one. No telling how long it will be until they get gold phones in i might just try my luck with this tomorrow.

I seem to remember this being the case last year with the 5. If so, the system would be in place Monday night after 10p local time for pickup the next day.

Yes they had this place last launch with the 5 and its a nice system to use and was wondering why it was not in place this year. Glad to see it come back as this helps consumers acquire a phone.

Since I started a new line maybe i can reserve on and take my old one back and just keep the line I reserved one on, would that work? Anyone know?

If you're saying you have a new line that's ready to purchase the subsidized phone I don't see why not. That's exactly like purchasing a new phone on that line, and returning the other line's phone would be a separate transaction

very interesting i am willing to drive 2 hours to my nearest apple store if this is the case instead of waiting the the 7-10 days out currently

If this is true, I'm guessing the store will go offline a couple of hours before to make the changes to the page.

I have a 7-10 day shipping order placed but look forward to trying this reservation system.
