Will I be able to buy it at the price Apple had on their site? The reason I ask is that it says I can go with the early upgrade, but the AT&T man told my sister that we all had to do the full retail price. I don't want to show up and be blindsided by a $699 bill. Apple.com and ATT.com both say I can get it for $499.

I'd print out where it said that on BOTH sites and bring them with you. Odds are one out of every one AT&T employees are idiots.

Update!

I called my local Apple store and they told me exactly what others have been saying here :D

If you reserved your iPhone through Apple.com, they WILL hold an iPhone for you but FOR THAT DAY ONLY! So if you try to pick up your reserved iPhone 3GS the day after they won't hold it for you because they will sell it to everyone else.

The catch is you most likely will have to wait in line even if you reserved. But you're pretty much guaranteed an iPhone if you wait in line. So you can swing by the Apple store after work or something but be prepared to wait a while.

He also said that the reservations were a good way to plan of ahead of how many units they should receive that day so everyone could get one.

Apple store employees have been telling everyone everything; they don't even know whats goin on.

I placed three orders (trying to see the different rate plans and showing them to family) at the same store. I doubt they would actually hold, and not sell to any other customers, 2 Black 32Gb iPhones and one 16gb Black "just cuz". If their system were really doing this, it should have been trackable via SSN. Or they would have asked for payment info. Or SOMETHING! you may be right, but it just seems unlikely that they would stash a finite stock of 0day product for a customer who hasn't even show they will pay.

I believe that's why all reservations expire on the same day. You could be right though, I'd say around Wednesday we'll all know the 100% scoop.

Though I am going there a bit early since he did tell me "the earlier, the better" which is true since you won't have to wait a long ass time to get an iPhone.

I also asked him how busy he believes it'll be since they can see how many reservations they've got. He says it'll be pretty much the same as the 3G launch, but maybe a bit less (upgrade fee's, economy, etc)

When you say ATT.com do you mean that when you check your "Upgrade Status" in OLAM that it shows that you qualify for an "Early Upgrade" price?

Both Systems access the same data, AT&T's. So if you "Reserve" via Apple.com for in-store purchase and you make no changes between now and when you pick up the phone then you should expect to receive the "Early Upgrade" pricing at any Point of Sale (POS); Apple, AT&T, BestBuy....

I just got back from a Apple store and spoke to the manager there. She told me that there will be the number of reserved phones held for those who pre-reserved them. Their names will not be on them but they will have that volume of phones in a spot for pre-reserved customers. There will be additional phones at the store for the people who did not reserve them.
That is what I was told so we will see what happens.

Which is another reason I think this is BS...no guarantee they will have the model you want.

And if they avoid the server debacle of last year, it should go a lot more smoothly.

Oh look, I was right. My Apple store said they sold out of the 32GB black ones at 2PM. I stroll in at 6PM, tell them I have one reserved, and they go back and get one for me. See, pre-authorization and pre-ordering are NOT the same thing.

At the Apple store here in CO @ Highlands Ranch, they were holding iPhones for those that reserved them.

That's what they did here too. There were some people saying in this thread that it's a first-come first-served basis, even if you pre-order, which isn't the case. They were confused by the line in the bottom of the confirmation email that stated that pre-authorization didn't guarantee a phone. Pre-ordering does guarantee a phone though, at least for today.
