I will be attempting this today. I have an appt at 1PM CST to pick up a Verizon 256GB Black but I have AT&T. I'm hoping they will let me put my AT&T SIM into it prior to trying to activate it.

I have read some are able to do this without having the original carrier account, but have also heard I would need a Verizon acct. Not sure who is right. I know others are attempting this today so hopefully someone will pass along the info.

Just came back form Apple Store. I can confirm that with IUP they make you select the carrier that you reserved. I reserved a Verizon I7+ and have T Mobile Service, and when going through the checkout out process, I needed a verizon account. Luckily I was able to snag a T mobile one in store. They wouldnt let me change SIM cards and they had a verizon rep in store stating that specific model has to activate with verizon first and then it can be used for any carrier. Let me know if anyone else had a different outcome.

That's weird, I guess I understand T-mobile/Verizon since GSM/CDMA but I hope ATT works. This sucks.

Damn. That's not what I was wanting to hear. I can't cancel my reservation so maybe I will get lucky and they will have an AT&T 7+ in stock....though I won't hold my breathe.

I was contacted by Apple yesterday regarding the issues I had with the Upgrade Program and they are looking to get me the phone I wanted, so if I have to wait on that it will be fine with me. Just sucks not able to use my SIM card in the phone knowing full well it will work once activated on Verizon.

Apple recommended if I wanted to keep that phone I could sign up for Verizon service and then cancel it. From that point I could just switch SIM cards. To me that was just stupid idea. Sucks because the phone comes fully unlocked and everyone knows it works with all carriers. I mentioned how a lot of people are doing that with ATT/T Mobile because both GSM and he stated they are probably going to run into the same problem.

yeah, it is really stupid, but something I am highly considering. Just create a new account with ATT (new number) and cancel as soon as I walk about of the store. Just know that ATT, etc would probably make you pay for at least 1 month of service.

Did they do try to change the sim card to tmobile during checkout?

I believe the only thing you would have to pay for would be the activation fee. As long as you don't use any service there shouldn't be a fee, unless they have changed their terms & conditions.

No didnt even get that far, they said no matter what it would need to be activated first on verizon and then can be switched. I personally think it is bogus because I left the store with the phone sealed in box. I could have just taken any sim card at that point and switched it on my own.

They won't let you try another sim card. This makes me think it will actually work, they just prolly have an agreement so Verizon can state they X amount of activations for the new phone.

you will also be hit with a credit check when you open a new acct.

I'm going to try calling the Apple store to check on the ATT/Tmobile bit. No sense on showing up to my reservation if i'll just be denied.

They stated that the IUP is an unlocked phone, yet you still need to activate it initially on the carrier that the model is corresponding to originally.

How did you leave the store with phone still sealed in its box??

That is really irrelevant to me. As others said, they fall off after 2 years, I am good with my chase cards (5/24 rule), and I do not plan on getting a new car/mortgage in the next year or two.

If your not pressed for time, it might be worth it to show up and see if by some lucky chance they have the one you want with your carrier?!?! I'm going to at least try that. Worst case I'm in the same spot I am now.

yes. It clearly states that when you register for the plan too. It is definitely some kind of agreement they have with the carries otherwise why would apple care?

I preordered a 7+ 128 Black, so I know there are no extras left :(

I was a bit surprised also I left with sealed box, they switched over number and account right on computer. Although I would have declined he didn't even ask if I needed any assistance in setting up. He handed me sealed box and case I selected and said all set have a nice day!

"Due to extremely high call volume we are unable to answer your call at this time" Great I guess can't even call and ask.
