Capcom has released Resident Evil Village for iPhone 15 Pro models and iPads with M1 or later Apple silicon. The game is available now as a 7.92GB download from the App Store. Players can try it for free and unlock the full game for the special price of $15.99 – a 60% discount that runs until November 20.

The regular pricing for the base game is $39.99, with a $19.99 in app purchase for the Winters’ Expansion DLC. There is also a $4.99 All Access Voucher DLC. As noted by TouchArcade, these DLC packs are the same as the PC and console versions.

Resident Evil 4 Remake is due later this year for iPhone 15 Pro, iPad (M1 and later) models, and macOS. The App Store still lists the game as "Coming Soon – Expected December 31, 2023," but this is a placeholder and the game could come much sooner (there is speculation it could even be released immediately following Apple's upcoming "Scary Fast" event.)

Resident Evil 4 Remake and Resident Evil Village were showcased during Apple's ‌iPhone 15 Pro‌ announcement in September. The ‌iPhone 15 Pro‌ and ‌iPhone 15 Pro‌ Max are powered by an A17 Pro chip that features a brand new GPU with hardware-accelerated ray tracing, enabling ported console games to be played on the iPhone at near-equivalent performance.

DisplayPort support is built into the USB-C port on all iPhone 15 models, meaning that the devices can also output video at up to 4K/60Hz natively to a DisplayPort-equipped external display or TV with a supported USB-C to DisplayPort cable. On previous iPhones with a Lightning port, video mirroring is limited to 1080p with Apple's Lightning-to-HDMI or Lightning-to-VGA adapters.

Resident Evil 4 Remake will have cross-progression on iOS, iPadOS, and macOS. In contrast, Resident Evil Village has cross-progression on iPadOS and iOS only, because it is already available on macOS, while the iOS and iPadOS release is an individual purchase.

Been testing it on both iPhone and M1 iPad, it runs better than I was expecting (default recommended graphics setting). 30 minutes of gameplay made my iPad warm but not dangerously hot, and consumed 18% battery. Playing with a wireless controller because the touch controls are not practical.

Funnily enough the iPhone version of the game occasionally displays a macOS-like mouse cursor in the top-left corner, probably as a developer oversight. Normally it's hidden by the curved corners of the iPhone display but it shows up in screen captures (see attached image).

Can't wait for Resident Evil 4 (2023 remake) to follow suit!

Worth noting that RE8 for Mac is also on sale at 60% off until November 20 as well.

So is it possible to connect the iPhone to the TV and use a wireless controller to play by connecting the controller to the iPhone via Bluetooth? Is it possible to connect the iPhone to the TV via Airplay and use a wireless controller?

It's possible to do both, I've heard reports of audio desync issues when playing over HDMI. Tonight after work I'm going to test it over AirPlay mirroring to an Apple TV, but I expect the latency to be bad.

Incidentally, currently I play games on my phone with a wireless controller but with AirPlay mirroring to my Quest 2 VR headset and the latency was much lower than I had originally expected. Games like Genshin Impact play over AirPlay just fine but games that require very precise timing like music rhythm titles probably won't work this way. It remains to be seen if action titles like Resident Evil will work this way. What's interesting is that I get much lower latency when AirPlay mirroring to my VR headset than when mirroring to my Apple TV (HD, 2015 model).

And if anyone's wondering how to AirPlay to a VR headset, I used SideQuest to sideload Android APKs since the Quest runs on a custom build of Android.

I was thinking to myself that with horrendous battery life in modern iPhone's & Apple not interested in addressing the issue, what we really need is a battery draining game to play on the go. What could go wrong?
The internet: Apple Arcade sucks, we want better games.
Also the internet: Better games suck because they drain the battery.

🤣

Happy for iPhone/iPad folks, but I personally can't understand where's the joy of playing this game on a small touchscreen. Having played all the RE games, I think it needs the keyboard and mouse. It needs a screen larger than 13 - 14 inch for full immersion. You need to sit comfortably in your chair to enjoy games like that, even if you just walk around and look at the details of the locations. Keeping your screen in front of your eyes with both hands just doesn't sound right. This version is like a sugar-gluten-fat-free vegan product to me (which is my personal opinion only). But, then again, I'm happy for Apple to have such a big title in their stores now.

Prediction: it will sell poorly (mostly because users consider it “too expensive”). Resulting in no AAA developer releasing a title on iOS/iPadOS/Mac for several years until Apple pays them to do so in yet another experiment to make Apple a viable gaming platform
