Rest Finger to unlock?

That and it won't matter too much a few years down the road when a non physical Home button has been around for 3-4 generations and most people have updated. since most of the "fear" around the change is breaking their Home button. (Which I think no one should even worry about to begin with. I understand some may have had back luck in the past, but Home buttons don't break all that often.)

I press the home button once to get to my springboard. Raise to wake, press home and I'm there.
 
"Raise to wake", only if you need to check the notifications on the lock screen

Otherwise, simply press the home button from sleep takes you directly to the home screen

Not sure why this is complex to understand.

iOS 9 w/Touch ID 2 devices - pressing the home button with your finger on it was so fast, it went directly to your home screen without seeing the notifications. You had to use the power button or a non registered finger to stay on the lock screen.

iOS 10 B1 w/Touch ID 2 devices - They introduced raise to wake. The phone is still locked but placing your finger on the Touch ID would unlock the phone and allow you to interact. It would NOT take you to the home screen. You would need to press the home button for that to happen.

iOS 10 B2 introduced a feature called Rest Finger to Unlock. Used for people that are pained by the motion of pressing the home button repeatedly. I've tested it on and off and nothing is different. From what I am reading, it's not working as intended/broken.

Thank you, rebooting my device has now enabled this feature and now it's like iOS 9 - I can press and keep my finger on the home button and it will go straight to home screen like iOS 9.

Using 6S Plus.

That has always been the case even in beta 1. The new feature doesn't even do anything yet. What you describe is exactly how it's worked on both my iPhone 6 and iPad Pro 12.9" in beta 1 and still in beta 2. Many others as well.

Actually, this has been my experience too. I guess the new feature isn't working quite yet.

That's not really correct.

With the option disabled I can wake the phone via the Power button, then press the Home button just once and keep my registered finger on the Touch ID and go to the Home screen. This is the "feature" off and even did this before the feature in beta 1. Which you say is the behaviour with the option On.

Right now the Rest to Unlock does literally nothing.

Your post seems perfectly logical and I agree with almost all of it, however the use case you talk about here is how I thought "Rest Finger to Unlock" would work but so far people are saying it's having no effect. Has this worked for you and, if so, what model are you using?

Edit: actually in reading your post again I see there are a couple of things that aren't quite correct (according to my observations) but I'm mainly interested in hearing whether "rest to unlock" works for anyone, on any model

Yep, he is and I've been posting the same but for a moment you gave me hope that feature had been working for someone. I had been holding out hope that it worked for 6s/6s+, which is the only device where you might frequently accidentally get to the home screen by accident. Oh well, thanks for confirming 🙂

I've been trying to even think of what the option is even supposed to mean. It's kinda not clear at all.

Example (the way it sounds what it should do): Lets say it's for use with Raise to Wake. You wake the screen by raising the phone. "Rest to unlock" the Touch ID to jump to the Home screen without a single button press. Cool! People who hate pressing the Home button rejoice! Except that wouldn't work. How would one unlock to reply to a notification or interact with a widget if it just took you to Home (because doing so with Touch ID is required to do those functions. Unlock, not open)

Yes, I think the reality is that it's an accessibility feature for people who literally can't press the button (not just those who like to complain about it here), hence it's presence in the accessibility section. You're right though, whether for accessibility or just those who can't face change, there's an implication they'd be losing out on (or requiring some other method that'd have to be learned) to use rich notifications, if indeed it opened springboard. It's a mystery but I honestly think the current implementation in the betas is a good one as-is anyway.

It always required 1 click. The only time two is needed is if you wake the screen via the Home button, lift your finger off before it uses Touch ID to open the phone. So that you can see/read/interact with a notification or widget. And then need to press home again to advance once done with all of that.

You don't need to unlock the phone to reply to a notification.

This is about as clear as you can possibly make it. At least that's how I understand it all. Rest Finger to Unlock does nothing different whether it's toggled on or off. While I understand that the lock screen becomes unlocked so you can interact with notifications, it doesn't matter if the toggle is on or off, the interaction between me and the device is exactly the same. And yes, I've hard rebooted my phone several times and there is still no change.

Having to press the home button at the lock screen to go to your home screen is fine for those with the 6S and 6S+, due to the insanely fast fingerprint reader. But for those of us with the 6 and 6+, unlocking the phone to the home screen takes even longer now with the new setup. Sure it's only maybe an extra second or two, but it's still longer. I think Rest Finger to Unlock is supposed to remedy that for us non-S users, but as of right now it just doesn't.

Not for a text message you don't; literally just responded using raise to wake and 3D Touch on the notification. Didn't touch the home button once.
