i've seen this issue that i'm having mentioned elsewhere, (needing to restart after wake from sleep) and was wondering-
does anybody know if this is a hardware issue? or is it something that might/should be fixed w/ 10.5.2?
    thanks

I have a read a few post where people changed the hard drive that came with their computer and the problem went away... others say they are having no luck.

That's interesting you mention that. Not only was my last Harpertown having other issues, but it was a Western Digital drive in it and I was having the sleep restart problem. Exchanged for another MacPro and it came with a Seagate. Haven't had that problem since. "Dangerous and disturbing this puzzle is."

There are two different problems with the Mac Pros. One problem is where the computer kernel panics when it wakes from sleep (the screen grays from the top to the bottom and says you need to restart).

The other problem causes the computer to just restart on its own after it wakes up.

I was having the first problem, but then I took out the RAM and put it back in and was fine. Just food for thought.

I am one of the people with the MacPros that was fixed by removing the 320GB Seagate drive. It's sitting on my desk now and my system couldn't be better of :)
    Good luck!

That's weird. So if you removed the Seagate and it's fine, and I got rid of the Western Digital and it's fine, then is it really the hard drives that were causing the problem?

I have no idea if it's a firmware issue with the OEM drives - all I know is with 2 WD drives, I have zero problems now.

mines doing the kernel panic (goes grey and says to restart).

the OEM drive is a seagate, though from what others have said in this thread it doesn't sound like that's likely to be the problem....

so the consensus is that we're looking at a firmware/software problem here?
should 10.5.2 take care of this?

I was having problems with this, but after resetting the SMC and zapping the PRAM I haven't had the problem any more.

I have 4 hard drives, including the original 500 GB (CTO) from Apple.

My stock Mac Pro came with a 320G WD Caviar (not a Seagate) and it still has the reboot on wake problem. There is no kernel panic screen, it just restarts by itself.

When you call Apple, what do they say about "sleep" issue? I see a lot of people complaining they are having this problem, but I don't see where anyone has stated that they have talked with an Apple's tech? Perhaps I missed it. If so, then point me to the link.

I did not call them. Some people earlier in the thread were thinking it might be the Seagate firmware, and I was just pointing out that my stock drive was a Western Digital and yet it still has the problem.

Well shouldn't someone say something to Apple. If I'm paying that kind of money for a Mac Pro, and even if I didn't buy the extended AppleCare, I would have 90 days of free Apple telephone support and I would use it.

I haven't seen anyone post that they called Apple Support and talked with them about the sleep/restart problem. I've seen people say that as fast as people were posting on Apple's website Discussion Group about this problem, Apple was removing the posts, but nothing about talking to Apple Support. Illogical behavior to me. Kind of like buying a brand new car and when you put the car in neutral, and then you put it back into drive, the car won't move and you have to shut the motor off and restart again. And the worst part is you never tell the automobile maker that you are having this problem.

By the way, as I stated in the other thread, my problem has returned even with the stock drive out of the machine.
I have since re-installed it with the same results.
I am now debating whether to return the MacPro and wait for a proper solution.

I don't have Boot Camp installed on my Mac Pro, but if anyone out there does, and Windows sleeps/wakes ok, we would at least know it's not a hardware issue...

I am also having the wake from sleep problem on a new MP - I have the stock drive set up for system and apps only, then have the main user pointed to a second 1 TB hard drive. Any chance this setup could be causing the problem?

    My $.02

I have a PowerMac G4 733 D/A that has a similar and common problem. Sleep worked perfectly until I installed a PCI USB 2.0 card. After that, whenever I put the computer to sleep, the only way to waken it was with a restart. Sound familiar? I wonder if this is a PCI express or USB 2 issue in the '08 Mac Pro? If so, it should be easy to fix with a software update.

Has anyone managed to solve their "reboot on wake from sleep" problems?

I did the SMC reset, but I left all the wires unplugged for an entire night while I slept.

Doing that, I haven't had the problem for 2 weeks. Also, during those 2 weeks, I've been putting my computer to sleep 3-4 times a day for varying periods (as well as sleeping it overnight) to make sure the problem is gone, and it hasn't happened again yet.

Stock MP 2.8 ATi 2600 here.

The reboot from sleep happened one time for me and another time, the fans came on and I had to pull the plug because it didn't boot. I reset the SMC and haven't had any occurances since. I've put it to sleep many times during the past several days and it's worked fine. :)

i've done all that stuff too and the problem persists for me.

people have also been talking about it in the other thread, "reboot from sleep poll" i think it's called.

i'm still thinking i'm going to exchange mine in the next day or two, if i get time...

I have a 2008 Mac Pro with the 8800 Card. I ordered it with the 320Gig Hard Drive but don't know who makes it. I was NOT having any problems until I added a Seagate 1TB 7200.11 drive. I put that in the second bay and left the stock in the first. I installed the OS from scratch on the 1TB and the stock was left untouched... I just don't boot from it.
Now I have a problem where if it goes to sleep and I try and wake it up by moving the mouse it looks like it reboots...

I'm going to try switching the drive positions or removing the original one just to see.... But again I never had a problem with JUST the original one....

    Weird....

The problem seems to happen more since I pulled the stock 320GB drive. I would really like a soution, but at least it boots up really fast compared to a Win OC ; P
