After updates etc for me.

Occasionally use Onyx for a full sweep through the system. But now that i am running OS and Apps on a separate drive to the data it should be pretty good all the time.

I don't understand why restarting/shutting down is so frowned down upon? I normally leave my PB for the whole day and shut it down at night. What's a minute for turning on a computer (and about 15 seconds for dashboard)?

At least for me, I think psychologically restarting makes the computer seem snappier because IMO I don't think it made any difference.

If you don't mind the 30sec wait every morning its actually better for the mac. Its just that Most everyone and I include my self are just to impatient to wait...

I restart only when I go into windows via bootcamp so I can game....

But before bootcamp, I would not restart until a update came out for a program/os that made me reboot.

Woah!

Okay, I never restart my Mac mini, so it has probably been up for a couple of weeks. It's a Core Duo with 2GB of RAM, yet get this!

Page ins/outs: 73677/28087
VM Size: 13.55GB!

I have plenty of HD space and I haven't noticed any performance problems whatsoever, but that does strike me as a little excessive given the amount of RAM in this thing.

So, perhaps regular restarts really is a good idea o_O

My iMac G5 w/ 512MB of RAM has:
Page ins/outs: 109659/122059

That is with an uptime of 2 hours  . This is worrying...
Maybe it's time I upgraded my RAM...

Unless you're all doing over-night rendering or something, you should all restart every day (after a long night off for your Macs). Turning it off at night helps save the planet and some cash at the same time. ;)

Why we have the sleep function.

I never shutdown my Mac. I logout and sleep. The VM for the user gets deleted on logout, and only a few kernal VMs stay on the drive. I find it takes a good 2 - 3 hours of hard use to get my machines running up to speed after a restart, everything takes time to cache in RAM and VRAM. I notice no real slowdowns after a long period of use. Only time I restart is on power failure or on updates.

I used to restart every day, but recently I have instead been putting my iBook into sleep over night. I havent noticed any speed increases or reductions when using the computer. I think its great, you dont need to wait for it to boot up every day.

But would putting it to sleep draw more power? Wouldnt the booting of all of the computer components equal the power draw of idle processes when in sleep mode?

I usually (read: everyday) fall asleep listening to iTunes or watching something in Front Row - I've set Sleep to come on after an hour of inactivity. My Mac doesn't turn off apart from updates etc.

Still using power for no reason. ;)
A few watts of power. Everything is sent to sleep. All that is still active is firmware and keeps power to the RAM, with a little to power the mouse and keyboard. CPU, HDD, DVD drive, video etc. is sent to sleep.

I used to restart my iBook bout once a week. But now that I m forced to use a Compaq till MB arrives, I have to restart everyday. Some times twice. And then there are times when XP crashes thrice on the same day.:( :D
