Yeah and I have video cards die in Mac Pros left and right at work. Or the keyboards in the pre-unibody MacBook Pros that stop working because the battery gets warm. Or my brothers G4 Powerbook that had nearly everything but the LCD and HDD replaced in under 1 year.

You will never win an argument with me about Apple Quality. My co-worker literally bult his desk out of dead G5's. As far as I am concerened anyone that tries to justify Apple prices with "quality" are just ignorant to reality.

HP is number 1 in PC sales for a reason, it's probably the fact they make it so easy to get products fixed, and the quality of their Professional lines.

HP is also number 1 in failure rating for a reason.
 
Generally there is a restocking fee on returned hardware but it can be waived. If you explain to the Specialist why you might change your mind (perhaps after having some ownership and using it, a Mac is not for you; something that can't be determined by just playing with it in store) they might get clearance from the manager to waive the restocking fee.

It's slightly different but I think it still applies, but I know of many customers who have purchased iPod Classic's but at the end, it wasn't for them and the restocking fee was waived with no questions.

Not saying that you'll have the same luck but it's to let you know that it is possible to have it waived if you're having second thoughts. Only you know if the computer is right for you but if you purchase it and know you're going to return it, well we don't need to tell you the wrongs of that.

Remember, Apple's primary goal is to make the customer happy and if you're not happy with your Mac, I'm pretty sure they'll understand.
 
Yet I notice the only computer you have listed is a 15" MBP.
Because thats what I have at home, I also have more but didn't feel the need to put them in my sig here.

Home I have a custom built desktop, the MBP and a Lenovo x200

Past personal Desktops include: 2 Dell's desktops, 1 HP, 2 custom builds, an eMachines

Past personal Laptops: 1 Dell, 1 Acer, 2 HP's, 1 White MacBook, 1 Black MacBook, 1 Ai MacBook

Past Work: Dell desktop, an IBM laptop, HP


None of which have ever died on me or needed to go in for repair. I can tell you, like I said, We have HP desktop and laptops at work, and my dead Apple pile is bigger than my dead HP pile. My dead IBM pile is about even with the Apple pile, but the IBM's are on average a year older also.
 
Don't think there's any restocking fee for UK customers, and Apple organise the shipping back to them free of charge. Although we do have to pay more for Apple products in the first place though...

Thats all anecdotal evidence. I work for a University and our dead pile consists mainly of Gateway systems. We also purchased 8 new $1300+ HP EliteBooks this summer and 2 of them have died already (25% failure rate). So based on everything I have seen at my job over the last 3 years our Mac's have a 0% failure rate and our PC's are a LOT higher.

And based on my personal experiences with my own hardware (note the Evos were lightly used systems I sold to friends from my work):
  • Dell E1505 - bad screen (Fixed by Dell)
  • Dell E1505 - 2 bad hard drives (Fixed by Dell)
  • Dell E1505 - bad speakers (Fixed by Dell)
  • Dell XPS 630i - Bad RAM (Returned system to Dell, replaced with new one)
  • Dell XPS 630i - Bad video cards (Fixed by Dell)
  • Dell XPS 630i - bad motherboard (Fixed by Dell)
  • Custom build - bad memory (Had to RMA)
  • Another custom build - failed video card (Tossed card in trash)
  • Compaq Evo Laptop - bad RAM on 3 differnet Evos (Had to replace RAM)
  • Compaq Evo Laptop - failed batteries on 8 different Evos
  • Compaq Evo Laptop - bad hard drives on 3 different Evos

Pretty bad right? However the following are still working perfectly:
  • TiBook PowerBook G4 - 15"
  • PowerBook G4 - 15"
  • PowerBook G4 - 12"
  • iBook (3 of them)
  • PowerBook Wallstreet
  • 3 PowerMac G5 systems (1.8GHz dual processor models)
  • 15" MacBook Pro Classic

Anecdotal evidence. Delicious.
