A note on flash chips!

I believe that Samsung, Toshiba and possibly Micron have their 32GB flash chips for sale right now. Other suppliers have such on the market for the SD flash segment. These are not extremely cheap of course on the street but remember Apple doesn't pay street prices for the high volumes it uses.

What this all means is that I can see a 64 GB touch as an easy expectation an a 32GB nano as a some what weaker possibility. More importantly to many is that an iPhone upgrade can't be to far away either.

Apple could hit 128 GB in a Touch sized device given the right integration. It is a matter of board space or a willingness to use double stacked chip modules.

Anyway, just a random thought...what do they do with all of the previous generation iPods that they didn't sell?

As to GPS I can understand not everyone needing it or wanting to pay for it. I would not be surprised to see Apple offer stripped down models without this feature. More expensive Touches could offer up GPS, audio in any a host of other luster after features. This allows Apple to drive down the price on basic functionality while protecting it's flank with more advanced models.
BTO options would be nice.

umm, the very few that aren't sold (note, places are selling out already) are usually put on apple.com's refurb store.

I hope the new iPods are released fairly early in September, as i'm looking forward to getting one. Hopefully we'll see an early event like last years. Just a question-have Apple always had the iPod event on a Wednesday like last year, or is it a bit more random?

I don't think they would ditch the classic for a fancy touch. In fact, I personally don't even consider the touch an iPod, its more of a PDA with iPod capabilities.

You might have hit the nail on the head. Would they have a big ol press conference just to roll out similar ipods with greater capacity (at all levels)??

Maybe a new touch would be marketed as a PDA more than an ipod this time around, thus issue in a new generation of mobile computing...

Probably just have 8GB and 16GB iPod Nanos.

For iPod Classic, probably have 120GB and 160GB sizes.

iPod Touch, 8-32GB (reduced prices, better specs) 64GB version wont be out til early 2009.

I see them dropping the 8GB, moving the 16GB to $199 32GB at $299 and may be a 64GB for $399.

Is there any reason to get an ipod touch over an iphone?

The $70/month iPhone contract...

EXACTLY! I wont spend 70 buck a month. Needs to be cheeper then I'll buy.,

the reason iPod touch will never (afaik) see HDD is because the touch interface will not run smoothly on non-flash hardware. people complain about choppy coverflow on the iPod classic currently and that screen is half the size of the touch. let alone accelerometer based games and apps...

True, but come on never say never.

Exactly my feeling too. No Classic. No Touch. Just the iPod with BTO storage options.

:apple:Dal

Classic will be around til at least 2011 (10 years since first introduction) touch just came out so its not going nowhere...

you must have a very small itunes library... I certainly don't want to spend any time thinking of what i might want on my ipod today. Everything is there. easy decision....

EXACTRLY! I hate it when people complain about large music library. Who cares what one person has and the other doesnt. just because you want to decide how you may fell doesnt mean everyone else does.

What is the possibility that apple's new "nano" will be a nano touch?

This would explain the rumor of the larger, and wider screen (especially since I don't think Apple would release a larger nano than their previous version).

Seems like the next logical step to me, since the nano in it's current physical incarnation is pretty solid. So instead of replacing the old, just add a new one to the line.

What do you all think?

no. nanao wont get a touch screen.

more like a hand held computer.. same thing i know

BTO options would be nice.

True but may cause problems

I was disapointed at last years. hopefully this years will be great

Riiiight…

8 GB $249, 16 GB $299, and 32 GB $399 are more realistic (64 GB option early next year).

They could release redesigned notebooks at the same conference.

A PDA with iLife and iWork.

A device to create your media, not just to view it.

The $70/month iPhone contract...

Bingo. I already have a phone. As much as I would love an iPhone there's no way I can stomach 70/m + taxes + fees + contracts.
I'd rather the touch with a one time purchase fee, no obligations, no limits and no hidden costs.

I just hope the new models do get some sort of GPS to take advantage of the upcoming turn-by-turn. Then I could really replace my current PDA.

You're already paying for a phone, it would just be slightly more over what you are already paying...

Well... kinda, I think of the fact that you have to pay for major software updates a hidden costs.

I am all for a 240GB Classic. On another apple fan site many were all over those of us wanting a high capacity HD iPod-asking who really needs or has that much music. Obviously they would never sell as many classics as nanos or touches but there are many who don't use for video but have very large music collections. I mean we have thousands of CDs and so on and want to have a good part of our collection lossless to have with us at studios, offices, vacation houses and who play our pods through really great stereos and speakers. Many of us are not on the go headphone listeners.

My 160 Classic is full and I could easily have one double capacity. I also know DJs and so on who want these too. On the other site a few were trying to figure how many iTunes downloads or CDs we've purchased to have a classic so full, but again many older collectors have thousands of CDs and want the option to have them in hand.

I really hope Apple continues the classic. We don't need a touch that big but we love all of our music to go.

I like you. XD
You want to keep the Classic in line just as I do. =D
I really want a 240GB model considering I have over 190GB of stuff on my iTunes.
I have no reason to believe that it's gonna disappear this time around.

does this mean that perhaps apple will run out of ipod touches before the back to school promotion ends? if so im buying a mbp now.. screw the update

Canada online store...

Hey all, first real post other than hating Rogers for Canada's iPhone

I was on Apple's Canadian online store and I saw some really weird spaces under the iPod Touch.
There are two spots that say "Ships: Currently Unavailable" for an 8Gb and a 16Gb touch, but there are also order buttons present on the page.

link and pic

Just seems odd to me..... too many back to school sales? New ipods sooner than expected?

lolwut? Did you try refreshing it a few times to see if it's still there?

US store looks correct, btw.

Ya, been looking at it for about half and hour now, with both safari and firefox, and clearing all the caches. Checked the US store as well but it looks fine.

try http://store.apple.com/ca/browse/home/shop_ipod/family/ipod_touch?mco=MTE3MzI
or follow http://store.apple.com/ca to the touch section
I hope its not just my good old powerbook calling it quits.... really hoping for a new mbp soon

I wish they'd make the official annoucement already...I need a new iPod...

Jeez, I think the lawnmower won. =P
If that happened I'd most likely go through iPod withdrawals.
I went crazy the two weeks I didn't have my iPod while the sent me a refurbished.

Sound Quality

The 5th generation hdd based iPods used a high quality Wolfson DAC. This was replaced in the 6th generation classics with an inferior (but still probably fine for most) Cirrus Logic DAC. The Wolfson DAC is still used in the iPhone and iPod touch.

I was thinking it likely that the Wolfson DAC might be discontinued in the iPod touch lineup. The fact no one has mentioned sound quality in the previous posts suggests it wouldn't be missed. Personally, I'd like to see a high quality DAC and also a digital output. But I think Hell will freeze first.

Pleeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeese High Capacity Touch. 64GB minimum!!!! I want a touch, but it's got to be worth the money!

I hope so too. I don't know if it will suddenly jump from 8 GB to 64, but I do expect the logical progression of the upgrade to be to at least a 30 GB version.

If they are replacing the iPod classic with the touch, then they have to compensate by adding more storage so as to appeal to those who actually listen to music, haha.

yep...lawnmower won *LOL*

I do have a spare MP3 player (little 2 gig POS that I had lying around), so I can at least listen to music

but I want a new Classic...I hope they lower prices...and increase capacity...I'll get the 160
