Thanks everyone for the feedback. My question wasn't really whether the Retina is better (I know it is), it is whether its "betterness" is more pronounced in the Apple Store than it is under dimmer lighting. My theory is that the Retina's superior glare control makes the margin between the two panels even more pronounced in a place like the Apple Store with all the ambient light.

I actually find that the difference between the retina and regular panels is LESS pronounced at the Apple stores when the screens are jacked up to full brightness. I can't explain why, and it may be subjective on my part.

huge difference from regular res screens. esp once you take it home. very very nice and I find it hard to go back to a regular res screen.

Yeah -- for months (well, since the 2012 launch but more seriously the past months) I've been considering buying a 15" rMBP refurb as an upgrade from my early-2011 13" (which still runs fine). I just crave the aesthetics and larger screen but I feel it is just a selfish indulgence as my current machine is not yet obsolete.

In theory, yes. It's sharper, it has better color gamut, but it's about it.
Apple's quality control leaves much to be desired. Way too many defects. Personally I went through 4. The current one is no perfect but it's much better than the ones it replaced.
When I got my MBP 2010, it was just one that is still working. I think it speaks for itself.

When the first iPad retina was introduced, it was the exact same story. Look at the iPad Air and iPad mini now: the screens are fine, mostly even, no pink/yellow tints. The next generation Mac retina (IGZO) is supposed to get better as well.

Its brighter, better colors, higher res, clearer, and crisper. What else could be worse about it. If you put the rMBP next to any non retina mac it blows it out of the water.

No, it's not brighter!
Jeez, go compare at any store.

It's not IGZO panel in Macs yet to be brighter....

I have and its brighter. I did one better and put my rMBP next to my 2012 Macbook pro 13 at full brightness and the retina is brighter and better in every way. The retina looks like it belongs in 2014 and $1000 plus price tag and the macbook pro looks like a screen from 2007.
