Hello!

Just saw on Internet a new/revised LG UltraFine 5K Display and I was wondering which retina display could work with the classic MacPro.

Which 4K/5k Display is compatible with a vega 56?
Is it possible from a Display with Thunderbolt / USB3 C to connect the screen to one of the DisplayPort of the Vega and USB to the usb?

Thanks!

Nothing special about the larger resolutions. The Mac Pros run 5k, there's a forum member with two connected to his.

All 4k/5k displays are compatible with the Vega 56 seeing as it has a max resolution of 7680 x 4320. macOS just won't support any freesync technology, and if it is enabled on the display may result in a black screen, so if you're pick a freesync supported monitor, just be sure to disable it for macOS.

There's also USB3.1c to Displayport cabling but haven't used it but I assume works fine as USB3.1c is just delivering the bitstream to the display, except with a USB3.1 cable. I haven't googled the LG Ultrafine to see if it has displayport or not but I've connected several different 4k displays to my Vega 56, and all work as expected.

The Type C cable is carrying both USB 2 and the DisplayPort signal from the host system to the display. It may "happen to work" but the USB 2 channel not being there likely means won't be able to control the monitor ( make adjustments as that is all done from the Mac) and definitely means the USB ports on the monitor will be "dead in the water".

Most yes, but technically no. The 7K resolution is only coming by using a DisplayPort v1.4 stream to a single input port monitor. It is unlikely this monitor takes a DisplayPort 1.4 stream. It probably takes two DP v1.2 streams just like the last one.

"...iMac Pro supports two LG UltraFine 5K displays configured as dual-link SST 5120x2880 10bpc at 60Hz. ..."
Use the LG UltraFine 5K Display with your Mac or iPad Pro

To use the 5K resoltuion of this monitor you pragmatically need Thunderbolt. The non Thunderbolt 3 Mac systems that 'work' with this monitor all present with less than 5K. That is a combination of the monitor only having one input port and the need to get two DP v1.2 streams out to the monitor one one cable.

A cMP would probably be close to where the iPad Pro lands in terms of delivered resolution if the video part "happens to work".
