I'm with the OP on this one. The iPad display looks terrible compared to my iPhone 4. I use it mostly for ebooks and I'm considering selling it. I just wish my arms were longer so I could hold it further away.

Hopefully the next iPad has a higher resolution screen because the text does look very poor on it.

I own both an iPad and an iPhone 4. I agree that the iPhone's screen is great, but it is also small. I prefer using my iPad because of the biggest screen. Pixel density on the iPad screen is still good enough and the screen looks great. Of course when I am using my iPhone I enjoy the extra pixel density. I am not comparing the two and I love both.
 
Sure the iPad isn't super duper high rez, but the fact that it's display is high quality IPS makes a huge difference. The colours are really vivid and contrasty, and the viewing angle is excellent. It's definitely superior to almost all laptop displays.
