It should be 27 inches and 5120x2880. The 21.5 inch model should have the 3840x2160 resolution.

Keep in mind, the maximum resolution for Display Port is 3840 × 2160 × 30 bpp @ 60 Hz
and HDMI maxes out at
4096×2160p24 at 24 Bit Color.

This is just a rehash of the old scalable screen fonts issue that Apple ignored-away a few years ago with Lion development. It was the #1 wish list item at the time, but in the end it was proven to be MUCH more complex that anyone had dreamed.

To deal with other hi res displays like on the ipad etc regardless of sexy names like Retina, Apple hard coded a small cadre of custom screen fonts. Very few choices, static and not very configurable. But it worked on iphones etc.

Now that modern hardware is beating their door down for implementation, they'll have to deal with it. This time by not firing the dev team for cost overruns, but they've now got to take it seriously.

Since it's the hires's Achilles heel, and this hasn't really resurfaced until now, I'd say they don't have a solution other than a small font offering like the ipad. That won't cut it on OSX believe me.

This will significantly delay a hi res Macbook Pro offering IMHO. So in the end, it's s not the hardware, it's the OS. I was wondering when someone was gonna bring this up

More accurately, DisplayPort 1.2 (a standard from 2009) can support a max throughput of 17.28 Gbit/s.

The resolution of 3840x2160 at 30 bpp (instead of the usual 24) and 60 Hz requires 16.00 Gbit/s using the CVT-R vertical blanking method.

One can imagine if the bpp is lowered to 24 bpp and the DisplayPort standard is upgraded slightly to support around 22 Gbit/s throughput, a quadrupled version of 2560x1440 resolution would be supported.

By my math I get 24(bits)*8MP(for screen res)*30fps=(.72Gbit/s)

What am I doing wrong?

I'm sure they'll find a way to do it. If they can't, we won't be seeing 'retina' display iMac's this year.

My 06 24" iMac is nearing its end, worse yet, the retina iPad has utterly ruined all my other displays, they actually irritate my eyes now...

Would be nice to get some high pixel density where it's currently missing... However, unlike the iPad, I'd really like the ability to increase workspace, even if I gotta squint!

Seems like this is an afterthought / back burner thing, thanks to the i-Generation...

Having a retina display while actually losing screen real estate seems a bit counterintuitive...

I have to disagree. I've thought for years that the tiny menu text and enormous amount of screen real estate has been on the counter-productive side.

So I for one would love to see crisp, LARGER text and icons.

Text you can easily read, and icon previews clear enough to see what they are... I'm all for it! :)

I think it is a case of the displays have always irritated your eyes, but it is more noticeable now that you have a display you can look at without that irritation. I have always got irritated eyes when looking at a display (which I do all day), but it is noticeably better when looking at a Retina screen.

Definitely Getting

If this is going to be like they said it to be - count me in. I'm definitely getting one of this as soon as it becomes available.

I've been surfing around the web trying to take in as much information as I can on what to get for my freelance design job and planning to get my very first Mac and a couple or more of Apple products to see what all the rumors is about.

But after a month or so when Apple release new features, updates, fixes etc. on its new products... I don't want to get into trouble from getting my hands on my first to be Apples :D

I actually would LOOOOOVE a Retina iMac but what I really, really, really really want is an iMac with a FREAKING HDMI PORT. Come on Apple, MAKE IT HAPPEN.

Retina? Please be true.

I currently have an 2009 13" MacBook Pro and will be upgrading to the new 15" MBP hopefully next week after the unveil. I am REALLY hoping for retina displays I just hope it isn't an extra expense. Who knows?
