Yep, seems like it's just an issue with our Dell 3007WFP-HCs. 1920x1200 is within the max res for single link DVI. I bet if you used your dual-link DVI cable with the Hanns.G monitor, it would also work. :)

No, I have a Samsung 305T with the same behavior - same resolution choices, etc. That Apple dual-link-dvi adapter and Samsung monitor work fine on older Thunderbolt macbook pros.

It also crashed the OS when I unplugged the adapter from the computer.

I do not see how that would be the conclusion. A majority of 2560x1600 displays are dual-dvi. It sounds like an issue with the apple adaptor. I hope Apple figures this out, if not that is a deal-breaker for me and I will spend a lot less on a thunderbolt think pad if I can only run one 30".

Sorry, I meant it's an issue with the Retina Macbook Pro... in combination with the 3007WFP-HC... and the adapter :)
Since the adapter works with the Macbook Air + the 30" dell. And I would think the Retina Macbook Pro + the dual-link adapter + a different 30" monitor works too. (although not with ALL, since it also doesn't work w/ the samsung 305T too). A good question would be whether a 3rd party mini display port to dual-link dvi adapter would work w/ the retina macbook pro & the 3007wfp-hc. But i bet the main issue lies with the retina macbook pro (as in, it can be fixed by just changing the retina macbook pro)

I hope you are right! Being able to run two 30"s is more of a bonus to me than the retina display itself. I sure hope they figure this out quickly and fix it.

It sounds like there are a lot of growing pains with this display. I remember years ago trying to install a 1920x1200 panel in a 15" MBP. I got it in the machine just fine but could never get the software sorted out, even though it was a stock 17" resolution. That seems to be a small issue compared to all of the resolutions apple says. They are offering on this display.

I'm having this exact same problem. I've connected my 15" MBP Retina to my Dell 3007WFP display using Apple's mini DisplayPort to DVI-D Dual Link adapter and found that it is sending only Single Link data. Contrary to the press releases (quoted above), 2560x1600 isn't working.

I am having the same issue. Does anyone on this thread have Mountain Lion installed? It would be good to know if it works there.

Has anyone confirmed that the rMBP works perfectly with the TB Apple Display in both lid open and lid closed situations? What does dragging a window across the retina dispay and non retina dispay look like? Thanks!

I just tried connecting my RMBP to my Dell U3011 over HDMI and it's all messed up as well. It's detecting the monitor correctly but it's only giving me options for 1920x1200, 1600x1000 or 1280x800. Pretty disappointed in Apple right now for not having this work out of the box.

Can you try displayport by chance?

Only have DP->HDMI cable, not a MiniDP one.

Either way it's freaking HDMI, I'm embarrassed for Apple right now, can't believe they didn't test this before shipping.

HDMI is for 1080p on a normal tv. You guys are bitching about nonstandard stuff.

Please explain to me how HDMI is 'nonstandard stuff'? HDMI is used on a ton of stuff other then TVs...pretty much every monitor has a HDMI port now. It's so common that gasp, Apple decided to include a HDMI port on the RMBP...

Because they are trying to push resolutions that are higher then 1080p over HDMI. They should be using MiniDisplay port if DVI or VGA doesn't work. Apple shouldn't be expected to support every legacy video sollution in perpetuity. Buy a thunder bolt display. ; )

How is HDMI legacy? Last I checked, HDMI 1.4, which has been out since 2009, supports resolutions up to 4k.

Apple doesn't make a 30" matte display so I'm not going to buy an inferior, 27" glossy TB display.

Trust me that HDMI controller in the variable frame rate junk Dell panel is non standard and do not use the standards that the Mac is sending out meant to talk to a tv or projector. Just because a monitor comes with a hundred input methods doesnt make any of them good.

LOL junk Dell panel? The panel in the U3011 is pretty much the same LG panel that's in the 27" Thunderbolt display, just the 30" version.

If Apple is going to put a HDMI port on its devices, they should make sure they support the full capabilities of the specs which they don't seem to be doing here.

Almost all current laptops are incapable of driving anything higher than 1920x1200 through HDMI. And even though Dell U3011 has two HDMi ports, it doesn't mean that it supports 2560x1600 through HDMI.

Honestly while it might be able to do it doesn't mean it should. There should be a protection agency for people like you who abuse their Macs and force them to "interface" with trash like Dell. Just cause the cable fits doesn't make it right. I'm reporting your ass.

HDMI will not work for 2560x1600 out of a laptop. I this case, you likely need the minidisplayport to dual-link DVI-D adaptor. This is an active adaptor with a USB port to power it.

HDMI 1.4 supports resolutions up to 4096x2160:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/HDMI#Version_1.4

As far as I know you can't get HDMI 1.4 support by using a Mini-Displayport to HDMI adapter due to licensing reasons (which is probably why there's an HDMI port on the new MBP in the first place). Try using an actual HDMI cable from the HDMI port to your display. This also depends on whether the display supports HDMI 1.4.

Edit: The Dell U3011 supports a maximum of 1920x1200 over HDMI:

...1920 x 1200 (HDMI input source).

http://support.dell.com/support/edo...ug/operate.htm#Setting the Optimal Resolution

So no use blaming Apple for that one. Your best bet would be a Mini-Displayport to Displayport cable. You should be able to get one pretty cheaply from Amazon or Monoprice.

RMBP and USB

I'm very interested to hear the outcome of these issues. I've been thinking of buying a RMBP to replace my 3 year old MacPro and if it can't power two 30in apple displays its a deal breaker for me.

Along the same lines, does anyone know if you can plug the USB connection from the display port adapter into a USB 3.0/2.0 hub? I'd hate to burn both USB 3.0 ports on the MBP just for the monitors.

Hmm this is a deal breaker for me - i plan on running dual dell 3007's with x2 dual link adapters which i have.

Hopefully the issue can be resolved can anyone who has mountain lion confirm the bugs still there?

Thanks

My RMBP drove two dell 3011 30" screens at 2560x1600 at work today via displayport with no problem.

At home I hooked up the laptop to a 30" 3007WFP via apple's usb-powered displayport to DVI adaptor, and it worked fine at 2560x1600, until I left and came back to find the laptop asleep and/or crashed. I rebooted it, and then found myself having the same problem as the OP.

I resorted to SwitchResX, which managed to successfully set the 3007WFP back to 2560x1600.

Whats the performance like with the 2 30" panels connected? .....Is there any noticeable slow down / lag?

Thanks
