I've made my position on this subject very clear in other threads, so I won't repeat myself.

Simple Answer: Yes

Things to be wary of:

1. It might take a couple of days to get your upgrade back. It's unlikely you'll be able to walk-in, return a phone and buy another just like that. You might get away with it, you might not.
2. If you activate any phone (while you're waiting), other than an iPhone you'll lose your unlimited data.
3. There will be a limited supply upon launch, so be prepared to wait a while even after the White iPhone is released (seeing as how you couldn't wait in the first place, I'm not sure you could wait)

My feelings are that it's not a problem, nor do I have remorse for those that haven't gotten theirs... I ordered a second one after the pre order date and still got it in a week or so... No big deal. Not sure why people "can't get one" or are having trouble that want one. I want to see if the white one acts differently than the black since they have had a bit more time holding it from the public. It may very well be the same, but when some say they don't have a ""death grip issue" and can't make it happen with the current 4s, and I can and do, I think I have a right to view the options :)

I suggest you look at the priority list thread. Try telling those guys it only takes a week.

White and Black only differ by color. If they changed something on the white, they'll also change it on the black.

All I know is in the first or so week of July, I placed an order on Att.com and got it within 5-10 days. I didn't see any lists, or anything else, beyond placing my order. No slams intended for those "in line".

The only idiot I see is you ^ since you insist on name calling.

That's called Freedom. If you have the option to return your phone within 30 days and choose to do so. Go for it.

You may call it 'Freedom'. In actuality, it is an uninformed choice that someone made because they didn't have enough common sense to use that 'freedom' right, wait until the White iPhone came out, and made an INFORMED choice. Their screwed up intentions causing someone who is legitimately waiting to wait longer is not 'freedom'. It's rather inconsiderate, and the way things are going, Apple and ATT see it as so.

There are so many self-righteous people preaching their values on here. If people want to swap a black phone out for a white one, who cares? The whole crybaby "Oh you took a black phone from somebody who actually wanted it" is so childish. It's ridiculous how you guys are acting like this is some huge morally wrong situation. Try focusing your energy on things that actually matter in the real world.

I think they're angry because they feel that those people are "stealing" their phone.

With the whole "limited supply" bit about the white model, hopefully there aren't as many people as for the launch last month, or it is going to be a madhouse.

Fot what it's worth, I won't lose any sleep over not being able to swap for the white one. I will still be curious if it performs any better with the reception, or if I would have been able to some how get one of the "non-death grip compliant phones" that people say they can't make it happen on, but it's all groovy gravy.

Also, I really didn't have a desire at all for the white one before I (quickly) learned about the achilles heel spot, and wondered if it would be silently changed somewhat. Especially when I kept hearing people say they couldn't even make the "death grip happen".

I certainly would care if I'm waiting for the white iPhone, my Apple or ATT store gets some in limited supply, I go in to buy one, and find out that I am now on a 6 - 8 week waiting list because some person who already bought a black one on Day 1 all of a sudden realizes that he wants a white one instead, and tries to swap is for it.

If it were reversed, and only the white one was out, then at the end of the month, they released black, and I went to swap mine for a black one, you and others wouldd be screaming bloody murder up and down this forum.

To put it short, you can't have it both ways. So how about doing the right thing and HONOURING your purchase. If you get buyer's remorse after the 30 days are up, tough ****. You should have waited like everyone else, until BOTH models were out (instead of instantly gratifying yourself), and made an informed choice based off of both models.

It's sad that you don't see that, let alone can respect the fact that others have been waiting for over a month for their choice to come available. Really speaks of your character.

And the "I want it, when I want it" entitlement attitude isn't?

I thought so too but the unsubsidized price apparently doesn't mean no contract when it comes to the iPhone 4 and when I go to Apple's site it only gives you the option of buying a new one to replace an existing phone or to add a new line (which I don't want).

It sounds like they deactivate your old phone when you get your new phone?

I gave my wife my old iP3, took the sim card out of her 5 year old Nokia and put it in my old iP3, and the iP3 works fine, still at $10/mo.

She is happy and I'm happy with my iP4.

People are funny, mostly those who get so upset over a phone....maybe those people need some actual problems to deal with in their lives...maybe....

It's really more childish to get so worked up about it actually. If people want to return their phone for a different color, let them do it and mind your business. Thinking that they are "stealing" (or whatever word you want to use) is absurd. Somebody exchanging black for white is not going to affect stock levels enough to ruin your day.

And by the way, I have a black iPhone 4 and am keeping my black iPhone 4. But if I were waiting on a list, I wouldn't get all riled up about people swapping their phone. That's what the return policy is for. Whether you like it or not, people are allowed to return their phone for whatever reason they like within 30 days. Normally, they would have to pay a fee to do that. This occasion just happens to be unique in that Apple is waiving all restocking fees.

I am one who picked up the black temporarily to get the white later. However with all the problems people are experiencing if the black one I have was perfect and had no issues, I would consider myself lucky and keep it. But unfortunately i have dropped calls, antenna, and other issues that makes me just wanna exchange this more than ever before.

so you bet your sore eee azzes i am gonna return this and get the white later, if i experience the same/other issues, might just go back to my 3Gs. Peace y'all!!!

White iPhone stock is very limited.

Both sides get equally worked up. If it didn't bother you, you wouldn't post.

Never talked about you personally, don't really care.

No restocking fee is meant for people who no longer want the iPhone 4. Not people who want to exchange their loaner for a White iPhone 4. Blatantly abusing Apple's kindness.

Woah, get off the midnight morale train to madness. The truth is, this is a perfectly sane practice in our free market society. Just one example here, how many times a day do stores do exchanges for different color shirts, pants, shoes, etc. You should go to every customer and yell at them for being immoral for returning their loaner items LOL. We've all been in a similar situation and just b/c it's an item prioritized on your list doesn't make it right to involve morals.

How many of said shirts, pants, shoes, etc. have a limited time for you to return them before they say that you can't?

I just returned from shopping for a baby. Excluding gifts, the chain stores here in CA have a 15 day return/exchange policy for clothes. After that, you're on your own. Nursing supplies? Once you open the box, they won't accept it for returns nor exchanges. You're on your own.

Don't mistake a 'free market society' for self entitlement. In a free market society, it is up to the consumer to make an informed choice on what he/she wants to buy. Like I said before, you don't have that informed choice when half your choices aren't available. So you wait until all choices are available, THEN MAKE YOUR DECISION. If you don't, you deserve what you get. The person who played it smart and waited shouldn't be punished by having someone who didn't try to exchange their phone after the 30 day period is up, potentially making the person who waited have to wait longer.

As long as Apple allows the option to be available people have the right to do what they want. It might not be very considerate or nice, but they certainly can do it.

seems to me that the people who "played it smart" are the ones who have been using the iphone 4 for almost a month now and will probably still get the white one they wanted.

if you waited and decided to not "steal" a black iphone 4 for someone else then good for you. i hope you feel good about yourself, hopefully as good as i feel when i'm playing with my ip4. ;)

Once you remove the tag (read: open the box), its no longer returnable.

Apple allowed free returns because of the antenna issue. Not because they wanted to allow you to switch colors.

Got lucky is more like it. If it weren't for Apple's kindness those people would have to pay $60-70 to return their phone and get the white one.

I'm sure there are plenty of people who don't mind paying a restocking fee.

And that's fine, that's the point of the restocking fee. But there are many, many more who will swap now that there is no restocking fee.
