I really don't think sky-lake is going to be that big of a bump... Looking at the generation to generation improvements as measured at Anandtech makes me think that any Mac running a sandy-bridge or later processor is probably fast enough. I think the bigger deal is the SSD speed increase of the 4 channel PCI interfaces being used now, and maybe a move back to Nvidia for dGPU.

I have a early 2012 15" mbp 2.7ghz with 16gb of ram and a 512gb ssd and it still runs like a dream. Every year they brought out a new model, I was excited to possibly upgrade, and then the benchmarks came out and other than a battery-life increase, there was little to no real-world performance increase.

So I say buy the model you like, and don't worry about it.

yeah there is basically no difference between 2013-15 15" rMBP
I returned mine and added an SSD to my 2007 MBP. This will get me through until Skylake.

Ultimately, I decided that the 4 year old CPU Apple used in the mid 2015 update was something I'd be disappointed with if the next iteration was a complete design change.

If you can hold out for a year, do it.

You and me both--didn't know there were any other 3,1 users! My 2007 MBP is still running strong* with an SSD and 8gb of ram. Heck, the thing is faster than when I bought it and still faster than many recent years' MB/MBPs/iMacs/Mac Minis that have spinning platter drives. It's a travesty that Apple stuck with 5400 rpm drives for so long.

I'm posting this from a MacPro 1,1 running Yosemite too.

Gotta love the older Apple hardware!

* Ok, my two kids--both under 5--have knocked my MBP off of the table about 4 times, including breaking the bezel around the screen--now held together with a clamp. It also had the Nvidia bug--twice (Apple replaced free both times)--I'm on the 3rd battery (one free via Apple), and I replaced the keyboard once after a cat knocked a glass of water all over. Given how repairable/upgradeable Apple computers are, I doubt I'll ever get close to this usage again. Too bad.

There's no denying that HQ class Skylake chips are coming, but the question is when. The bigger question is if Apple is planning a major (or minor) redesign of the case of the macbook pro. If they are, I don't expect a new MBP model until 2016. If they aren't , then I can see them coming out with new MBP models in time for the holidays.

Why? They properly had engineering samples of the chips since the start of the year, including a reference design of a motherboard.

IMO, they still got to test it with the actual chips to make sure there's no issues with heat, etc. I highly doubt apple will just slap the chips in and sell them without extensive testing.

Which they would have gotten the second the first production batch comes though. Dell showcased working laptops with the skylake xeon cpu's, you don't think Apple has a working laptop in their labs?

The biggest reason people are waiting for Skylake is the graphics improvements. I mean its still integrated graphics, c-mon...And DDR4 isn't going to be revolutionary. Skylake is still an iterative update, not the game changer that everyone is making it out to be. Going back to nVidia would be nice, but I have completely given up on hoping that Apple will finally put a proper dGPU in the 15". I broke down and just bought a gaming computer.

if you have a 2012 you should wait for skylake. so far every map since the first retina feels like a incremental at best. and they should be, intel's cpu hasn't been improved that much themselves. all the hype train aside skylake does look like it will bring alot of new technology to the field. so yeah you should return and wait for skylake.

Thanks for your input guys! I decided just to keep it. It's miles better than my mid 2012 non retina. That thing heats up faster than an oven. I really love the new one actually! Hell, who cares if thy update it soon, the new ones are pretty close to perfect. I ain't tripping no more lol.

Oh God, not another "wait for Skylake?" thread!

Okay, just kidding, I realise it must be agony for some.
It was for me, but in the end I learned to love the bomb...
No wait, I decided to go for it, I mean!

Since you had the non Retina, I think you made the right decision.
