If the screen is uniform and the case does not creak, I say keep it, because there is a good chance you will get either of these issues on an exchange.

If the screen is not uniform or your case creaks, then return it.

I can't see it at all in the pictures you posted, and it sounds like you can't really notice in person either unless you strain yourself ...if everything else checks out (no yellow tint etc) I would probably keep it...but maybe thats just because I've gone through 3 exchanges and i still have yellow tint 🙁 ...when I went back after my 3rd they offered me free applecare because i think they were tired of opening new units so I decided to keep it since it's not very noticeable.

It's easy to be overly concerned when you spend that much money on a machine ... I know that I certainly was at first, but chances are its not a problem thats going to affect your use of it in any way so I wouldn't sweat it, especially since its bound to get scratched sooner rather than later...<--- IMHO

Right. That's what I'm thinking. It's not going to affect my use of it any way because I can't even see the scratch when the screen is on.

There's a lot worse that I WOULD NOT want to put up with i.e. image retention.

As far as I'm concerned, the scratch isn't even there because I can't see it unless i turn the screen off first then shine a flashlight or take it out into the sun.

I do understand why you say return it but I don't want to return something 99.99999999% good for something that might have other flaws...

Yes the screen is uniform and no creeks at all...

I decided I wanted more power and picked up the 15" 2599 model and the screen did not seem even and there was a darker area in the middle of the screen. No matter how hard I tried I couldn't get past it so I returned it today. After playing the screen lottery with the iPad Air and loosing I decided to return it rather then exchange and stick with the late 2013. Its just hard to get a nice white even screen from Apple anymore especially on the iPad Airs and 15" MBPs

If your machine is perfect then I would not exchange and and risk the lottery.

I am super anal and OCD about pretty much everything, and I've come to learn that nothing is perfect and searching for perfection will leave you dissapointed.

I have played the return game a lot (not with my rMBP) and it has cost me a lot of money over the years. Plus I've returned many items in hopes of receiving something in better condition, only to end up very dissapointed. If this truly doesnt bother you, then dont worry about it. Press on and enjoy your computer.

A few years ago, I returned my early-2011 13" MBP because I was convinced it was overheating. Swapped it out at the Apple store without any hassle. They even opened the box with me there. Took it home and subjected it to the very experiments I performed on the previous one. Lo and behold, the temperature ran up on this one too and I discovered there was nothing wrong with the other one, just the Sandy Bridge MBPs had a tendency to run hot. I felt guilty for taking advantage of Apple's lenient, 14-day exchange policy and I sometimes imagine my beloved computers as having a silicone soul. The one I replaced just wanted to be my companion for years to come. It must have become a refurb when it was deserving of a finer fate.

What drove me nuts, for a matter of months, was that I believed the one I replaced had a quicker stock drive than the new one. Whenever I clicked documents or downloads, the icons within the "stacks" would pop up faster on the old computer, whereas the new one would show the placeholders longer. Probably my OCD at play but it goes to show you may find trifling things to fret over with a replacement computer, which may lead you to regret having swapped out the original.

One reason I would swap it out is what if an innocent, minor looking scratch grows or becomes more noticeable over time?

I don't understand why anyone is concerning you with this possible problem because if for any reason the exchanged screen isn't to your standard you can return that one, too. That's why I suggested opening the next one in the store. If you don't like it then ask for another. If it doesn't bother you then why start the thread? Are we supposed to talk you into being bothered by it? Or talk you into not being bothered by it?

It is really no-brainer. Return it.

Not only it is a defect, you might also have "HAIRLINE scratch on the screen" in your mind every time you look at the screen.

think about when you come to sell it. 99% perfect apart from a scratch on the screen. i wouldn't buy it....

There are some reply's indicating you keep it, because there is a chance your exchange could have issues. So what if it does, just exchange that one too.

Look, sure there are some issues to be concerned about, but don't let a small percentage of issues noted here sway you from returning a defective unit.

Just think about how many Macbooks are sold with no issues, but you don't hear about all them as they have no reason to complain; remember most folks come to a forum for assistance with some issue.

You will do what you want to do, but as for me, when I get my MBP it better be worth the $2600, and a scratch on a $2600 is not acceptable to me. Heck, a scratch on a $500 screen would not be acceptable.

As I said in an earlier response, it must bother you on some level or you would not have posted here, and being that it does bother you, if you don't exchange it you will have regrets.

I'm not sure we can help you.

When someone says to replace, you argue against them by saying you can't see it.

At the same time, you sound like you are unhappy and want us to tell you to replace it.

Yeah, that's the impression I get too.

What bugs you more?:

1) A scratch on the screen that you didn't put there.

2) Returning and exchanging your computer.

That should answer your question.

lol you are feeling sorry for a company that's worth more than a thousand billion?
It's like if someone was feeling sorry for making you waste one cent.

I have returned more products then I can count(a bad thing clearly)so I would return it if you didn't cause it,but with my first week of the rmbp I am using now I was so tired in bed and I closed my screen with out knowing the power cable was next to the track pad.The screen closing on the magsafe 2 metal part caused a nick it bothers the hell of me but I wasn't going to return it because I loved it and I caused the problem.I am just thankful that it is on the black part of the screen and not on the screen it self and that it did not crack the whole screen.

Do scratches grow bigger on their own? I think you are thinking about cracks???

Scratches, dents, cracks, I don't care. It's defect so I would return it. But thats me.

I really don't know what your end game is here. As someone else pointed out, out argue against someone who says replaces or at the very least you question them.

The way I look at it, you asked a question. Look at the answers and make a decision. Judging by the replies it seems that replace is winning overwhelmingly.

The headache of dealing with a return (and other potential problems down the road) is not worth dealing with the pain of a hairline scratch that you can only see when the computer is off. How long are you staring at a computer when it's off?? And how often is the lid even open when the computer is off? A split second?

It seems like people are saying that you should return it out of principle. I say, some principles you can let go of.

Ok guys thanks a lot for all your help. I don't want to keep this thread going and going.

Basically the above quote is spot on. I have to add to the quote, YOU CAN'T EVEN SEE IT WHEN THE COMPUTER SCREEN IS OFF IN MY OFFICE!

You can only see the scratch turning it off AND either taking it in the sun OR shining the iphone flashlight on it.

So, unless you WANT to see it, it does not exist.

Thank you guys, I really needed both sides of the debate to decide.

The reason why I'm not returning it ultimately is because you can't see it when the screen is on and you can't see it when the screen is off. You can only see it when the screen is off and you shine a bright light on it like the sun or the iphone flashlight.

I'm also very concerned about exchanging it out and getting one that doesn't have an even screen, yellow screen, etc etc

/end thread please

THANKS AGAIN TO ALL!

The number of times you stated the following is just hilarious to me:

"you can't see it when the screen is on and you can't see it when the screen is off. You can only see it when the screen is off and you shine a bright light on it like the sun or the iphone flashlight."

I didn't count but it's got to be at least ten.

My only concern is what if my next one has other problems? Like a yellow screen etc..

The scratch makes no difference when the screen is on. I cannot see it when the screen is on...

Buy another one in store, compare and keep the better one!

The hell is wrong with people? You already determined that the "scratch" doesn't affect you in anyway under normal working conditions. You already determined that your panel and hinge have no issues. Easy decision. Keep it. Let all these self-righteous "I deserve a pristine/yet potentially bugged product out of the box" morons say what they want, but you'd be a fool to return that machine.

I just bought a new macbook pro retina and I love it.

Though, there is a HAIRLINE scratch on the screen out of the box that ONLY can be seen in the sunlight or if I shine a flashlight on it while the screen is OFF.

It cannot be seen when the screen is on and in use.

Am I being ridiculous to have it bother me? It was more than $2600.
Exchange it for another one and have no fear about what might be wrong with the exchange. Apple quality is outstanding. The imperfections we see posted here are the exceptions. I bet the new one will be perfect.

I can't believe the people suggesting not returning it, comments on the people stated otherwise (out of principle, wrong). We are just giving opinions.

A scratch on the case does nothing at all. I might not even bother to return/exchamge.

But a scratch on the screen (glass) is another story, especially the thread starter used "hairline" to describe it.

There's a possibility that it might be a hairline "crack" (The thinner it is, the worse it is in my experience). A piece of glass is durable until a crack is formed. Every time a lid is opened or closed, keyboard contacts, temperature changes, will give pressure. It will grow over time.
