Getting one of those is almost as hard as getting a new Apple device! Wife's as much a Kindle fangirl as folks are around here about their Apple devices, and it was no easy feat getting her a Paperwhite. Got it, and what's funny is she barely picks up her FireHD now!

It's funny...well, it's not...but I sometimes get headaches using the big iPad! I always put it down to the amount of light in proportion to the size of my head!, with the mini I think I get a good amount of natural light from the corners of my eyes.

Usually only in bed though where I probably hold it too close!

I read some review (I forget where) but the mini is more reflective then the N7, so its possible the OP is dealing with more eye strain because of it.

Today's the first day I'm actually using the mini in at my work location. I've been working remote at home for the past week and up to that point it was fine.

I am noticing that it is quite reflective with the overhead lights. I'm not sure if its more reflective then my iPad 1 but I do need to tilt the mini to avoid seeing my reflection.

I wish people would read before blindly defending their pixel positions. The OP had trouble with the SIZE, not the resolution.

I know what the OP said, but it's only an assumption that the headaches were due to the size. We really don't this for sure. While the OP consciously says its the size, his eyes may think differently. It's impossible to know without having him test a Retina mini and see if the same happens or try using an iPad 2. It could also be the glare of the screen.

You lost all credibility when u suggested buying an iPad 2 after complaining about the minis screen

Haha. This.

What's Target's return policy for iPads? It's not really clear on the website if they can be returned opened or if there is a restocking fee. I was planning on getting a Mini at Best Buy in case I end up not liking it, since they have no restocking fee.
You have around 3 months or so to return it. I got it the day it came out and my return day is in late January. As long as you have the receipt, you can return it opened. I called five different Targets in my area to confirm. I wanted to make sure they all said the something and knew what they were talking about.

Go with what you like is my best advise.

I just got a white mini but i havent been exactly thrilled with it then again ive only had like 20 mins to play with it. I'll play with it this weekend to see how it much i like it.

In my view i wanted the ipad retina but knowing a remodeled version with better battery/design/etc is near by (spring) i couldnt justify getting it at this moment. So im thinking of using the mini as a stop gap type of ipad. One good thing is magazine are smaller downloads compared to the bigger ipad

I think the OP said the size of the screen was giving him headaches not the resolution. Size as in the font is small. I've had the same issues. Safari is awful on the mini. Resolution I can live with. Size I'm not so sure either.

iPad 2 is bigger than the mini ;)

As an HTPO* xpert, I can offer some helpful observations that are standard in our business.
End user cannot be trusted in judging WHY they are experiencing a technology the way that they do. Sound counter-intuitive and arrogant but it has been my experience.

So for example. The OP stated that he thought that the size of the screen was the culprit right? But if screen size were culpable, how do you imagine that a Billion people manage and enjoy 4" Smart phones with no issues?
I suspect it's a combination of the high reflectivity (refractive index) of the screen cover glass and the lower text resolution on that particular panel.

It's like a person that needs glasses saying "Ouch my head hurts what's wrong with the lighting in this room "

To add my 2 pennies worth here; everyone has a different set of eyes and can cope with different requirements. For me personally, even though I'm long-sighted and should have difficulty with smaller, blurry text; I honestly don't with the iPad mini without glasses.

I personally found the Nexus 7 and other tablets of the same nature more difficult to sustain usability with. I'm just wondering if the OP is using the iPad too close to his eyes to counter-act any eye problems.

Anyway, let's hope 12 months brings us a version 2 with a retina display. Certainly would blow all the other tablets out of the water.

Ipad mini gave me headaches

Before the fanboys attack me:
I have owned every i pad released.
I sort of did a forced upgrade from 3 to 4.
I received the mini on launch day, loved the size but with the non-retina screen,
I experienced eye and headache discomfort
I gave it over a week but sent it back on tues.
Unfortunately I sold my 3 ,2 weeks before the mini launch which was dumb,
But received $420 for it so it cost me about a 100 bucks to get my new 4.
Would I have been happy with my 3-yes
I do like the snappiness and quickness of my 4 over 3
I am getting about 12 hrs of battery life compared to 9-10 hrs on 3
The heat factor is better also-cooler than my 3
I believe the problem with the mini is the size first, along with the non retina.
I never had problems wit my 1 or 2,but my senior eyes just could not take the
Mini.
And yes fanboys,I am 60 and wear reading glasses
So yes,I am enjoying my forced upgrade

No problem here with iPad 2, iPhone 3G or later, but cannot use the mini.

I wonder what could possibly be causing the headaches.

Note... I'm not at all questioning the truth of people's claims, I'm genuinely interested in it from a curiosity point of view.

Back in the CRT monitor days I could see flicker at any rate below 75Hz. 60Hz was a very common setting for people, but for me it was awful and caused eyestrain and headaches. Yet the same 60Hz caused no problems for me on a CRT TV. I could not explain the difference and so people didn't believe me.

I'm a few days shy of 45 and I can relate. The mini bothered my eyes. The iPad 1, 2 and iPhones 3GS, 4, 4S, 5 do not. Went with the 4 as I also had already sold my iPad 3.

We got your back. It's OK. Enjoy the 4.

I have a mini and 4 on order. Hope my 53 year eyes are ok with the mini. The plan is to use the mini on the road and the 4 at home. I also plan NOT to websurf with the mini but to use email, apps, Kindle and video.

Also looking at a matte screen protector. I had one on my iPad 1 and really liked it.

It's sad that people need to pre-defend themselves.

Clearly the young and the strong of sight should get the mini and the aged should not. They should check ID's before they are sold. Kind of like a reverse alcohol check. Where is our socialist government when we really need it. Nanny states, save us!

You should ask target about their return policy, because my target told that I could only exchange the mini for another one, if it was opened. Only if it was still sealed could I then get a refund. Can't return a product, sounds insane, I know! Luckily I don't want to return it.

People should get what they are comfortable with and what they are going to get the most use from, be that a Nexus 7 or any of the various iPad options. For me the Mini is great. I have no problems with the screen, but then this is my first iPad and not sure how legit comparing it to a 4S would be. I have wanted an iPad for years but waited for something smaller and the Mini's size and portability is great.

Just go to BestBuy and purchase an iPad or anything for that matter. There holiday return policy is until 01.24.2013. No restocking fee. The only exclusion is if you purchase a contract product i.e. cellular device, etc.
