Today I returned mi iPad Mini to Target. Yesterday I was using it and was trying to convince myself that it was the perfect screen size. However, I got a headache after about 5 minutes of use. This morning I did the same and again headache. Must be the small screen size...straining my eye sight. Who knows...

Anyway...I am debating between the iPad2 or refurbished iPad3. Is it worth getting the refurbished iPad3? I noticed I can buy and pick up at the Apple store...

Also, I got the protective cover for the Mini through the online Apple store. Is this something that I can return at one of their walk-in stores?

If you don't mind me asking, do you wear glasses? Just curious whether vision correction makes a difference. I agree things are generally smaller on the iPad mini screen, but for me it's still very readable and not a problem. But everyone's eyes are different.

Between iPad 2 and 3, I'd say it's a no-brainer, get the Retina.

How many people here remember the iBook? When it was first released, there was a huge mess with the screen fonts. I couldn't believe it. Fanboyz never said a word but subsequent OS updates eliminated this 'forced anti-aliasing'. I wonder if it's worked its way back in the iPad Mini?
Apple? What's going on here???

Funny how it wasn't a poor resolution 8 months ago.

No it was a still a poor resolution, there just wasn't anything better in a tablet format, so people made do.

In particular I've been buying WUXGA (1920x1200) 15" laptop screens and begging for something better since circa 2004 until they released the Retina Macbook Pro.

I can still resolve pixels on it, but it's significantly less crappy now.

Hi I've just returned mine today, because of the same reason. I loved that paperback size of the Mini and its weight,, but it's too small for reading... I had headaches and tearing eyes...it is not a book reader.

I own a 7" Kindle Fire HD as well as Nexus 7 and those are great for reading and I have bad eyesight. The iPad Mini should not be a problem either but it sounds like you've convinced yourself to wait for the retina version.

Did he say he was waiting for retina? No, he just returned it.

I returned mine and could care less if a retina version is released, it's still to small.

I own those two andriod tablets as well. For whatever reason, I'm drawn to reading on the Mini more! I also have bad eyesight, wear contacts and reading glasses.

Yeah man, don't know what to say. My eyesight is piss poor and I have no issues with a 7" tablet nor my iPad 2. I spent sometime with the Mini and if I did want one I would not have any issues using it as a reader.

After using the nexus 7, I have to say the keyboard is amazing at predictions. Screen is incredible and way better than the iPad 3. Plus the UI across system apps are awesome.

Only problem is that there are not much good tablry apps just larger phone apps.

There is no way the Nexus 7 screen is "way better" than the iPad 3. It is much lower resolution, pip, color gamut, and calibration.

The mini has significantly greater reading area.

You have got to be joking.

What's Target's return policy for iPads? It's not really clear on the website if they can be returned opened or if there is a restocking fee. I was planning on getting a Mini at Best Buy in case I end up not liking it, since they have no restocking fee.

I thought Best Buy still charge for re-stocking….

Nope, can't remember when they stopped but I think it's been a while. I recently returned a Mac Mini when the newest ones were announced, and no restocking fee on that either.

Turns out I'm taking back my iPad Mini as well, due to eye strain. I love the size and weight of it, but I feel mildly ill after using it for a half hour or so. Not sure if it's the pixel count, the size of the fonts, the reflectivity of the glass, the contrast, or what... but I just can't deal with it. I am terribly prone to motion sickness and wear contacts (my prescription is up to date as of earlier this year), but I've never had an issue with my iPad 1 or 3. Guess I'll stick with the large one and maybe give the Mini another try down the road on the next iteration.

I returned mine over a week ago because it was causing me headaches. I didn't know why and when I posted about it here I became a troll, whined, etc. i tried and tried to like it but couldnt. I find it weird that I can use my iPhone 5 for long periods without issue since it is so much smaller but I can(using it to post this). I don't care what anyone says, there is something with the mini that causes problems for some of us. For me the best thing I did, was get rid of it and get the new 4 which I have loved ever since.

Why not buy a full size one then? Surely you knew the size of the Mini before you purchased it? Too small for you, not too small for everyone. Your attitude makes it sound like it's Apples fault! By the way, the term is " couldn't care less", sorry that bugs me!

I did by a full size. As for knowing it was small, you don't really know until you try it.

And to the pinch and zoom reminder, you can't zoom in the App Store and various other applications.

To each their own. If your eyes like it, I'm truly happy for you. It just wasn't for me.

Insulting and being condescending to someone is not gonna help you here hon. You will have to understand that just because someone else has a different opinion than yours or different experience, it doesn't mean they are themselves wrong. It doesn't mean they are sprinkling "pixie dust" on it trying to make it into a Retina display.

Exactly!

...
However did anyone cope with non Retina displays if they are guaranteed to cause headaches?

I just learned right here in Macrumors that the "magical" iPad 1/2 had the worst display known to cause dizziness and headaches. Who knew. And here I thought it was awesome.

I tried one in Best Buy and like most of the other headache posts, only had a problem with Safari. I have the earlier iPads so I don't have a problem with the resolution, just something about the text almost gives me vertigo.

Sucks because I dig the iPad mini.

Have to reread your post like 3 times to finally get what you were saying. No, no, no you shouldn't try to get used to gadget. It has to impress you at first sight because you pay for them with money from you pocket, no?

I had no problem understanding his post on the first time reading...

Use the mini in landscape mode. Usually sorts out any complaints i have about readability.

So do I, but it still wasn't good enough for whatever reason. Got eye strain and some ugly headaches I haven't seen in years. It isn't just the resolution, but the text size as well. I could never sit and read on my 3G iPhone because of the size, so I didn't. But I'd use the iPad Mini for an hour or so at a time. Couldn't do it for any longer as that is when the headache and eye strain would be setting in.

Love the size and weight though, so I'll probably give it another shot when it is higher resolution.

Never had the problem with my first-gen iPad, which is why I was so surprised by the Mini. I even saw folks getting headaches here and ignored them thinking I shouldn't be affected. It can't be resolution alone, but resolution combined with a UI that has been scaled down, along with a tendency to sit and read on the device. The default font size is pretty small for a tablet or laptop, and it should probably be a bit bigger, or sharper to avoid eye strain.
