I've got rattling issues with my black 5. But I also realized I don't need a 32gb phone. I preordered this one and received it Friday. Is it possible for me to take it into the apple store and get a 16gb black iPhone 5 instead?

The store won't take it. Pretty sure you have to call apple and set up a return with them via mail.

Hold the camera to your ear, shake it back-and-forth and listen for a rattle. Mine makes a tiny noise. I'm not concerned about it. Everything works great.

Yeah I've held the lock button, side silent button, and the volume buttons and it rattles...

Will the store accept the return or do I have to deal with the online apple store?

Lock button makes a tiny sound when I shake mine but it's not really anything to be concerned about. I've read that other phones do that too.

Go to the store or contact them. Whatever is easier for you. I would get pretty stern on the phone and demand an overnight.

The store SHOULD accept the return. But here's an idea, why don't you call and ask them instead of us?

Mine doesn't rattle if I just shake the phone. If I slightly bump the phone against my hand. It rattles, just like my iPhone 4S for work does.

The phone is suppose to have a slight rattle...its related to the camera.

Everyone seems to be turning you down, but I've never held a 4, 4S, or 5 that doesn't slightly rattle when you tap the camera. Shaking it doesn't rattle, but tapping the camera slightly does.

Yeah I just posted that at the same time as you, that's what I'm referring to.

If you were just doing an exchange for a defective unit (32GB on your carrier for a 32GB on the same carrier), I believe you could do that by setting up a Genius Bar appointment or just going to the store.

However, since you want to return the phone and buy a different model altogether, I think you'll have to call 1-800-MY-APPLE. Unlike other products, iPhones bought online can be returned only to the online store. I think that's because the online store will have to process the paperwork to restore your cellular account to its pre-purchase status (i.e. get your upgrade back).

You can definitely return your pre-ordered iPhone in your Apple store. I know because that's what I did on Saturday. I didn't make any appointment. Just make sure you have your web order number or the packing slip that came with your iPhone. As for the exchange, I wasn't able to exchange my black iPhone for a white one. I still have my 4, so I'll just keep trying the store until I get the white model.

Good luck!

FWIW, some stores may make an exception to the policy, but it really is posted Apple policy that iPhones ordered through apple.com can't be returned at the store.

The screen shot below is from http://store.apple.com/us/help/returns_refund

"Note: An iPhone purchased on the Apple Online Store is ineligible for return to an Apple Retail Store."

Also, so that nobody's confused, the Apple Store will repair/replace defective iPhones at the Genius Bar, no matter where you originally bought it. You just can't return them for a refund, or switch to a different color/size at the Genius Bar.

i also returned my preordered iphone 5 to the Apple store no questions asked. i told them i bought it online, they asked me for the web order number, then processed the return
