You can definitely hold the iPhone 4 in your left hand, cover the bottom with your fingers, and not lose enough signal to drop a bar. You just have to be in an area where AT&T service is really good.

.like the act of giving up your oh-so-precious iPhone 4 was such a big step in your life or something.

Nobody gives a flying *** that you are returning it. I mean, good for you. Do what pleases you. It's your money, your phone, your life. Just ****** return already, jesus.

Stop your whining and complaining, just get a damn Verizon Android phone.

Clearly, there are people on this forum who are insecure about their decision to buy the iPhone 4. Anyone who mentions a problem makes them worry that they made the wrong decision. Its imperative to these people that all complaints be silenced. Then they can be happy believing that they've bought a phone with no problems. They're not happy with their purchase unless no one complains about it.

Now this is the stupidest idea I've ever heard. Sorry to disappoint you, but this is not a "bad batch" issue. Unless they change the current antenna design or switch it out to a different material or add some type of coating to it, all future iPhone 4's will have this "death grip" phenomena.

You see, your problem is NOT the iPhone 4. The problem is YOU.
You absolutely have to have an iPhone, which exactly why you came onto the forums to cry.

The iPhone 4 does exactly how it is advertised, if not more.
The death grip phenomena is not a design flaw, it is a limitation to cellular technology in general. Try holding any other phone in certain ways or covering up in certain ways on AT&T's ******-ass network and you will see that you will get the same dropped calls. The iPhone 4 is just more apparent of this because of the external antenna design and because so many people bought it.

The solution to your problem is VERY SIMPLE.
DUMP AT&T and GET VERIZON.

...and stop your whining.
Just joined this month...
Nice way to start talking with people.
I guess we can tell the type of people who are buying iPhone 4s, and why that apparently don't care or understand that there is a design defect with the phone which is very uncharacteristic of Apple.

I love how people think that Apple has changed somehow over the last 10 years, when it's really consumer attitudes that have changed.

what is your problem? actually the iPhone 4 does not do everything exactly as advertised. where the heck have you been... the commercials show people holding the phone with their LEFT hand and everything functioning normally, which is CLEARLY not the case in real life use. i agree that other phones also attenuate the signal when holding it a certain way, but those certain ways of holding it are not in the way of normal use and normal holding, whereas with the iPhone 4, it is. like i said before, dumping at&t and going to verizon is out of the question right now. i'm sorry if this is coming off as whining, but that is really not my intention. i came to "cry" on these forums for genuine advise/opinions. i thought that was the purpose of these forums..

get your facts straight. the phone does what it was advertised. just cause you have an issue holding it that way in YOUR coverage area does not mean it cant do it. If you are in a medium to strong signal area you can hold the phone anyway you want and it will drop signal some but will maintain the call. if you are in a fringe area just barely holding on to the signal to begin with, YES every way you touch the phone will effect the signal and maybe cause you to loose it. EVERY PHONE IN THE WORLD IS LIKE THIS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
the reason this is such a big deal is because the signal bars were not showing accurate readings and people thought they had a STRONG signal and touching it would kill it. also, many apple people love to complain. they will do it about evey product released. they will find something they dont like and rip it apart. It is deffinitely a love/hate relationship. those people come here and shout it on the roof tops and then mass hysteria ensues. if you would have dropped calls evey now and apple never told you that the antennas were redesigned on the outside. you would have chalked it up to bad att service and went on with your life.

No, no it's really not ... don't be so melodramatic.

As fantastic looking and aesthetically designed as it is, it's a tool, a piece of equipment. If it doesn't work as (you feel) advertised, then exercise your right at a consumer and return it. Why people thinking or returning iPhone 4's feel the need to post their little stories is beyond me. You say you wanted the opinions of others, but when returning something YOU worked for and that YOU paid for, there is no need for the opinions of others.

YOU are unhappy with the iPhone 4, so return it. End of story.

Yea, others opinions are not welcome here, these boards are for.. ummm, well, they are definately NOT here for other peoples opinions!

I think you spelled phone wrong, you forgot the i and the 4. :p

Nope, I spelled it the way i ment it. I work in the RF industry with 2 way radios and microwave radios. Cell phone antennas are the same thing. Every phone will do funky things in fring signal areas just by touching it a certain way or moving a certain way. this is RF fact.

Wow. People are unbelievably rude and juvenile around these parts.

OP - maybe I'm missing something, but why downgrade to a 3gs? Why not try out a newer phone?

I hear at&t are getting the new samsung galaxy, and it's supposed to be pretty good. You can always return it if you don't like it.

You can always sell it on craigslist and buy a 3gs on craigslist and make like a 300-400 dollars profit

yes thats the best beet .. sell it for like $500 and then you can buy the 3gs for like $275 and make some money for your self

5) Apple has said they will provide a software fix claiming they have had the bars calibration wrong since the very first Iphone. The bar calibration has absolutely nothing to do with the real signal strength or quality, that is, changing the bars is not going to improve the real signal strength, prevent dropped calls, or prevent data downloads from stopping or running very slow.

Omegaman

The funny thing is this admission is complete BS, considering this issue was supposedly already addressed in iOS 2.1, way back in September 2008.

Hey, you know what? It's NOT rocket science...if the Phone doesn't work for you or have the features or functions you need, want, enjoy, return it.
Do we have to have a zillion threads about how "I broke up with my girlfriend because..."?
I think not.
So why do we have a zillion threads about 'I don't like my iPhone 4 so I bought a ...'?
It's a FREAKING PHONE! If this is the most dramatic experience in your existence, you are one lucky person. Enjoy whatever cell phone you get!

QUICK QUESTION:

If someone was to return the Iphone 4 to an AT&T store where they purchased it are they charging the 10% restocking fee? I know the press release states that return it to apple store or apple online store for a full refund but says nothing about AT&Ts return policy.

Return it please. I am so sick of you children coming here and crying about such trivial things :)

the thing I hate the most about macrumors people is the outrageous comments people try to play off...

okay if you don't want to hear about this issue anymore then don't bring out a defective device after you have had 3 non-defective devices
