Really? I hate to harp on this point, but my 2012 Macbook AIR does just fine in this respect!

Do I really have to explain why this is? Your 2012 MBA has a garbage TN display from 2010. The MacBook has to drive a 2304x1440 retina display with WAY more pixels.

----------

Agreed. I just think some people are more sensitive to it than others. I am very sensitive to the UI lag.

Can you give me some examples of what you were doing that caused it to lag so badly? I want to see if I can duplicate it on my MacBook.

It's nice to read another viewpoint, and I'm not here to bash in any way... But surely points 2-5 were predictable in advance?
As someone who is waiting for their rMB to ship (& have already sold my existing MBP), it is frustrating to see a unit allocated to someone who was probably never going to like it. This isn't a personal attack, just frustrating to see from my side of the fence.

He did not know he wasn't going to like it. Yes Apple should take dedicate cliff walkers first - Trouble is, there are like 8 of you. Why cant people express an opinion and offer constructive criticism here? Yes you did your request "I'm not bashing here" quote then proceed to tell us all how those who would blindly keep a bloody computer they were not allowed to demo before they bought and then returned it should have been asked to wait at the back of the line.

The issue with the keyboard, sight unseen, was not predictable to me. Something you have to try. And no, I did not know the power cord was shorter than my MBA.

Honestly, I could live without the Magsafe, especially if it really lasted ALL DAY, then I wouldn't need to charge it. I literally use my Notebook for probably 12 hours a day, so its gonna sit on the charger at some time. The battery life isn't good enough to do without magsafe! I am sure Apple's wisdom is that "hey, this thing lasts all day, just charge it at night like your iPhone", but that argument falls apart for me! I didn't know that the battery wouldn't last as long as I had hoped.

Also, the VALUE statement I made really could not be assessed until after all of the above were added up and weighed against just keeping my existing MBA. This is not a decision of which NEW macbook to get, I'm saying I'd rather keep the money and stick with my old MBA 2012. And I can afford a new machine at any time, but I don't feel like paying to step backwards in so many ways.

And by the way, I bought a Silver, nobody seems to be clamoring for those. My opinion is that the material is Aluminum and the color should not pretend to be any other material than what it is, in a purist design sense. It's not made of friggin' gold, so why should it look gold? Also, scratch the thing, and guess what color you're gonna see? Hmm... anyway, that was a tangent, but I had to get it out there -- the new colors are pure hype and a diversion from purist good design! :)

Look this thing is (in my case) a $1,600 netbook. I ordered the 1.3 and hopefully I can at least run parallels in tandem with a few other programs I need. I love small and sleek and I am buying at the sacrifice of power and battery life. Mine is due May 15th just in time for a business trip. I think the extra 1.3 lbs over my 13" rMBP may be worth it. As for color, my wifes Gold unit arrived and it is, as you mention REALLY GOLD looking - A feminine touch she appreciates. Also she uses an iPhone, I hope they add a dual boot IOS / OSX to these in October but I know that would kill iPad sales.

I'm thinking there may be some low power management tricks employed, when the user is idle, and so inputs can cause delayed responses when peripherals.. CPU... wakes up. Kudos for the aggressive power management to get the TDP low enough to do a fanless product! But, this is the trade-off.

That is probably it. It's a good product, great even. I just can't make it my everyday just yet.

Everything in mission control. Scrolling between spaces, type in a URL in safari and launch mission control.

I can mimic the lag on command.

The base MBAs ship with 4GB /128GB. Bump them up to 8/256 and pricing becomes comparable, even leaving aside the display.

If want it to be truly comparable then you need to include the port adapters that the MBr would need to match the same ports on the MBA.

Bottom line: congratulations on making a reasoned decision on what fits your needs and circumstances.

But you have to realize that you're swimming upstream here against all the wanna-haves.

So it was nice of you to post your experience, but it does make me question your sanity?

I just opened 6 different windows in Safari including Youtube playing a video in 1080 and Apple running the Watch video, zero lag going in and out of Mission Control as fast as I could. Then I dragged the Youtube and Apple pages to new desktops, zero lag switching between any of them or opening any windows on desktop 1. The videos kept playing just fin in their windows too and Facebook was auto updating just fine. You might have a defective unit or things running that shouldn't be, sorry.

Even so, Apple and Intel should have ensured adequate performance pairing that kind of display and CPU. They're a little head of their time, maybe one more generation and it will be there.

I dont have steps to repro, the thing is on the FedEx truck back to apple already. I will say that maybe my restore from TimeMachine had enough apps pre-installed, maybe something in that pre-load caused undue burden on the machine? Starting from scratch would be a better test, no doubt.

What specs do you have?

Again. I think you are just less susceptible to the lag than I am. I can recreate it on every MacBook I have seen. All of the ones in store and the one I owned.

I bet if you upload a video others will notice the lag too.

Hi,

I thought folks here would be interested in my alternate opinion, I bought the rMB (1.2Ghz 5Y51 / 512GB SSD) on opening day, and had it for a few days already. I'm returning it, here's why.

I'm coming from a 13-inch MBA MID-2012, 1.8GHz Core i5. 8GB RAM / 256GB SSD. Plan was to replace it, and it is my one and only machine. I use it for business. I am a professional in the tech business, an engineer, but not a developer. I run MS Office, Chrome (yeah I know!), and Parallels for some Win7 apps (eg. Quickbooks).

I also sit in random places around my home, not at an office desk. I don't use a large monitor and keyboard in any kind of "docking" scenario. My notebook is it!

1. Performance. Too much UI lag on the rMB, even compared to my mid-2012 MBA. Running Parallels really bogged it down. Changing screen res didn't really help. Even scrolling in Outlook for MAC (v15), felt too laggy. Swiping between desktops (even without Parallels running) seemed not as smooth.

2. Keyboard "too small". I know, it's not smaller... but it is for me, because where I place the palms of my hands on my MBA, I USE that aluminum Realestate. Okay, I'mm not a touch typist of the traditional ilk, I have my own methods, but where I place my hands on the rMB, they are on the edges of the device, and those edges are sharp feeling. When the device is on my lap, or im in some other position, I just cant get quite as comfortable with where my hands sit. Having a place to rest them on the MBA is nice.

3. Magsafe. I love Magsafe. my dogs rip the power cord out too often as it is. A life saver.

4. Bundled power cord is too short! Does not come with the extension that my MBA did. Can't sit and charge in most places. And the battery life wasn't that great on the rMB (Chrome!) that I felt like I didn't need to normally sit with the wall adapter plugged in. Normally with my mBA I sit with it on AC all day. I know this can be fixed with a purchase of the extension cord, but it just annoyed me as an out of box experience, and one more darn thing to buy.

5. Cost, basically, given the above issues, I just don't find the VALUE in replacing my mid-2012 13" MBA with this device. The rMB is NOT faster and its harder for me to type on. If I was coming from an older mBA or an 11" MBA, I'd probably feel differently. To me, it's not a big enough jump to make it worth the upgrade investment today.

I knew once I saw the display on the rMB on 4/10th. that I didn't want one. I have a 2011 MBA, do you think Apple will discontinue it? I'm debating if I should purchase a 2015 MBA with i5 or i7 with 256SSD.

I don't understand this one. The charging cord is over six feet long, longer than any of the five MacBooks my family has had.

Good luck with your decision. The rMB is not for everyone and I'm glad people are realizing it and finding the laptop that fits their needs best.

Returning my rMB, don't like it enough to keep it.

Apple has already discontinued the 2011 MBA. The current model is the Early 2015 MBA.

I have the base model and like I said, zero lag. I'll make a video when I get back home.
You are just less susceptible to seeing it. Every rMBP and rMB besides the 15" rMBP with dedicated graphics card ive used lags. Some people notice it some don't. I will be waiting till Apple overcome this issue before jumping on the retina bandwagon.

I'll be returning mine as well - primary reason is 12" is just too damn small to get any real work done. I was trying to replace a 15" rMBP and the rMB would have been perfect if it weren't for the screen size - If they make a 14" rMB with support for 4K/60hz / 5K out that would be perfect for me. The biggest thing I was originally worried about - performance - wasn't even an issue.

Screen size is the sole reason why I did not jump either.

Correct. Wether someone else can see it or not is irrelevant. Those that see it, see it on all. It's a driver issue with intels graphics. That is why the dedicated GPU does not have the problem.

If it's so minuscule that most don't notice it, it's hardly an issue, especially reason to return a device. Now if it were throttling and slowing to a crawl or it was a major lag then yes. Some people are just way too over dramatic

Your statement makes zero sense. Care to elaborate?

Its just one of those things i cant stand, it affects me on xbox one games that have low FPS aswell, it annoys the crap out of me. Ill be replacing my 2011 MBA with a 2015 MBA, i would love a hi res screen but that ui lag is unbearable and for the price Apple charge i want perfection.
