There's certainly a possibility along those lines, or one along the lines of plenty of people having issues with their scheduling across different stores.

Supposedly you need to go to getsupport.apple.com in a web browser
to make a Genius Bar appt now.

When you go there, you need to jump through a dozen hoops to get anywhere- I still haven't found where Genius Bar appts are.

Looks to me like Apple is just trying to make it harder to do. Bummer.

Sounds like perhaps calling your local Apple store is probably the best way to go about it.

"Calling your local Apple Store" is now difficult as well. In fact, I believe that's now impossible without going through an extensive voice mail tree.

Stores still have local telephone numbers, but if you call them, it just transfers you to a general Apple support line. I'm guessing it's possible to reach an actual local store, just difficult and time-consuming.

Anyway, I have the answer to my original question, after talking to Apple.

The "revamped" Apple Store app has indeed stripped out the Genius Bar booking feature. Thanks a lot!

Now you have to go to to the web instead: www.apple.com/retail and search twice for a store, and then find a Genius Bar option- it's a pain in the a** compared to before.

It appears Apple is putting extra friction into the Genius Bar process to try to direct people to other, less resource-intensive support options.

Bummer.

I'm finally glad that they finally updated this app. I can finally....ok, there isn't anything I need in the updated app. I buy something in the Apple Store 1-2 times / year. That's only when I cannot find the item cheaper someplace else( e.g. Craigslist )
