Question: If you disable Apple Intelligence, does the Action Button do anything? The article makes it sound like it’s just tied to AI.

You can make the Action button do pretty much anything you like. I have mine set to open the Camera. My impression is, it's a great little phone, future proofed with all the current features I need plus a good 48 megapixel camera.
I traded my good condition iPhone 13 Pro Max in on it via Apple (such a simple procedure) and got half the price of the 16e as trade-in.

I went with the reg 16 from 13 mini, i miss the size of the mini i cant one hand message anymore 😥 but the battery on the mini new just was never great

You can! When composing a message press and hold the World symbol and at the bottom of the pop-up are three icons for condensed keyboard left, full size, and condensed right. Does that help?
