iPhone 5c = The "c" meant "cheap"
iPhone 4s, 5s, and 6s = The "s" meant "speed"
iPhone SE 1, 2, and 3 = The "SE" meant "Special Edition"

But after Apple released the iPhone 16e, they haven't said what the "e" means.
Some have said "essentials" and someone else said "expensive".

But still no clue from Apple?

Basically none of that is true

The c meant colour, and it was a great phone.

Unapologetically plastic

I love hearing the 5 year old propaganda about Android when I visit the forums here. In reality, a phone like the Samsung A16 5G - which costs $200 unlocked - will receive 6 years of software updates. Next?
6 years of security updates (not OS updates).

If CarPlay is your main concern have you considered using a wireless adapter for your wired CarPlay?
Nope, the port is busted so i can connect the phone, here it chime and see the charging start. But discovering later it is not charged so leaving the house uncharged.

Their website does state "security updates".

They say 6 OS updates here.

With the caveat that Samsung lacks a track record of actually supporting any device for that period of time, I will stand corrected for now. 😛
I would be very surprised if it got 6 OS updates. I use Samsung phones at work at the most they ever get is 1-2 OS updates.

I feel funny when I see the term “low cost”
The cheapest Redmi is $60 USD, still has better than 60hz refresh rate

iPhones are not competitive anymore, Apple feels like they don't need to be because of the ecosystem and vendor lock-in.

Give me an example of a Samsung phone which received 5-6 OS updates. :)

Every phone in their lineup, from the $200 A16 to the $2000 foldables, will. Samsung started expanding the timetable of software support with the S21 in 2021. It started with Android 11 and has been upgraded to Android 15, the current release. I don't think it will get Android 16 since the S21 was only promised 4 OS updates. This is actually the first year Samsung is promising 6 years of updates.

But this isn't Apple Intelligence. Samsung will actually deliver what they promise here.

iPhone 5c = The "c" meant "cheap"

I believe "C" is largely believed to have stood for "color" not "cheap." Also, although it was "plastic”, it wasn’t particularly cheap. The starting price with 16GB was $549 (around $745 in today's dollars) which was only $100 (around $136 in today's dollars) less than the regular 5S.

iPhone 4s, 5s, and 6s = The "s" meant "speed"

The "S" stood for "speed" with the 3GS but did Apple ever officially say what it stood for with the 4S, 5S, 6S, etc.?

4S -the S meant Siri

They didn't specify for the 5S or 6S as I recall.

Trouble is the A16 is borderline unusable. I sent mine back and got a used Pixel 6a instead.

Too expensive for people in the sub-$500 market.

Not good enough for people in the $600+ market. You can get a refurb 16 in VG+ condition for $650 with MagSafe, a better main camera, and a wide angle lens.

It was just an example. The reality is any Samsung released this year will get 6 os updates. Or Pixel.

I have an A15 5G. It's not a fast device but it's also free with a month of service on prepaid and I don't need much from my phones. It works for what I need.

Question: If you disable Apple Intelligence, does the Action Button do anything? The article makes it sound like it’s just tied to AI.
you can use the Action Button for anything, and not just whatever that Apple AI thingy is, you can make it switch between silent/ring modes, focus, shortcuts, accessibility features, camera, etc.

I do wonder if it’s partially aimed at people with pacemakers who cannot have the MagSafe era iPhones or even the watch (I think).

Obviously the point you make still stands - if Apple can save a few cents from the manufacturing of the 16e and push people up to buy the 15 or regular 16, they will.
That makes me curious what percentage of these devices are bought by health systems. I'm sure only a couple points in the grand scale, but a possible reason Apple excluded magnets from the device. I know I've observed almost all nurses with iPhones in the hospitals near me and other staff taking and entering vitals into iPhones. Hell, my physician was using an iPhone SE during my last annual visit, just sitting on the counter in the room. He said it was transcribing key points of our conversation into a queue that he could review and enter into my chart vs having to dictate the entire visit afterward.

that's great.
I'll stick with my iCloud which Samsung doesn't have. Have fun with Bixby and Samsung cloud and the triplicate applications that all do the same thing, plus who-knows-what-data-going-where.
