Review: Dell 24" HD

Haha, I guess not.
But the first email I got about 10 minutes ago was the "Order Acknowledgement". I just got the "Order Confirmation" which gave me an est. ship date of July 21, which would be next Thursday :)

However, compared to the Dell, the 23-in ACD has a much lower Contrast Ratio, much lower Brightness...
My 23" ACD is so bright I have to turn it down. If the Dell is brighter it's not necessary IMHO.

how can you adjust the contrast on the dell when hooked up via DVI?
I'm pretty sure you have to do that in the display calibration section of the system preferences, but maybe someone here who owns an LCD will correct me.

Anyway, the reason I'm here:
My 2405FPW shipped last friday with the free standard ground shipping. Dell estimated that it would be delivered between wednesday and friday of this week. But I just looked up the tracking number and UPS says it's scheduled to be delivered TOMORROW!! YAY!!
Technically, its scheduled for today... since it's now 2:00am :)

I can't wait! I'll be back with pictures :)

You can't normally adjust Contrast on a digitally connected lcd screen (dvi) since you'll have to alter the pixels. Brightness just affects the backlight.
What you can do is change the gamma to 2.2 using the apple display profiler, that's the effect I think you're looking for. Good luck!

Yea i saw that too... CRAP!
oh well, mine just got here today and it's AWESOME!! Still worth the $900+tax i paid for it

I'll post some pictures tomorrow.

By the way, is there any OS X utility that checks for dead/stuck pixels? I can't find any on mine, but i thought i'd check anyway

You know the insane thing. I got a 2405....I reordered a 2005. For Just a tad under $500. They sent me a 2405. I got it today. I think it was fate. Had a pretty bad day and I come home to a big box. Way bigger then the previous round of 2005's I went through a couple months ago. I was doing my dangedest to get a flawless display. In the end I returned everything and said screw it.
Well the deal went up again last week and being a sucker I tried it again. Ordered the 2005, used the corp discount my company has, and away I went. So I get home and this box is sitting in the garage that is WAY too large for a 2005. (I went though 3 monitors so I KNOW.) Remove the packing slip and lo and behold its a 2405...

I'm now sitting with a 24" display wondering if I should be good and return it....GRRRR damn morals.

PS- Part of me wonders if writing them a page and a half letter had something to do with it. Dell support is horrid. I would rather gnaw off my arm then call them up ever again. If you have to deal with Dell use their IM client on their site. All told I spent about 4 hours dealing with someone who was only slightly more comprehensible then white noise. Lets just say I came away with a bad taste. Enough that I wrote them a letter and sent a few e-mails. Doubt that's the case but still. *shrugs*

Two for the price of ONE

Amazing that you can get 2 Dell 2405s for the price of ONE apple cinema display!
No wonder Apple's gross margins and profits are so high...

It comes with both a DVI and VGA cable. You shouldn't need any adapters unless your graphics card only supports ADC monitors.

Need help on Dell 24"

hi gang. Very desperate for tech advice on the Dell 2405. I'm close to returning the display due to brightnes issues. I own a large format print shop, and just got a sweet new dual 2.7 loaded up for a PS workstation. I have been reading about the Dell displays for a couple months, and opted for the 24 rather than saving for a few more months for the Apple 30". As far as I can tell so far, these screens (I have the 2005 at home) are not calibratable "enough" for prepress/design work. The image quality when sitting in front the screen is just "wow". Clients freak out when the sit down and work with me. Colors jump off the screen, the blacks are black, and saturation is very good. Heck, to be honest, I'm getting better hue (color) than with my calibrated Electron blue. (I kid you not) heres the deal breaker for me. No mater what I do in calibration under OSX, I just cant get a decent gama level that even remotly resembles print. All my high rez PS files look at least 25-50% brighter than in print on our large format presses, or even our epson photo printers. So far i have done the following to tame this display...

1) Cranked the gama up to 2.2 (and beyond for gods sake) in calibration.
2) Turned down the brightnes on the display to Zero.
3) I have even experimented with cranking down the brightnes/luminence values while calibrating the color chanels under OSX's calibration utility, which cant have good overall impact on the color i would assume...

all to no avail. The reason this is so tough is it makes ANY type of photo editing imposible, as the mids all seem so freaking bright, that who ever knows how much to adjust for curves/levels etc. I would assume for FCP work as well, it's got to be imposible to do any color corection work with this display, unless you reley on the output display units I see in use.

Does anyone know how I can get a handle on this problem? Is there something in OSX that I could use to get a curtain over this supernova? I mean it's a strange problem, having a screen that is so freaking amazing to look at for sharpness, saturation, etc that the images just jump off the screen, but is so "good" or "pleasing" that clients are bumbed when they see there print output on our 12 color press that usually blows people away.

please any help appreciated...

i just got my dell 24". i see the same bright colors that you see. red and orange is a little bit off too. don't get me wrong, it looks amazing, great. but it seems to be overly bright and colorful. it's no problem for home users like me, it's an advantage because keira knightly looks even better. but so far i could't really adjust it to "normal" colors. i can see that in a professional printshop that is a problem.

seems you have to go with the ACD. in some other thread somebody mentioned that in his professional opinion the ACD looks more real. couldn't find the post anymore but it was in one of the 20" dell threads of the last 2 month.

2405 w/ consoles

Can any of you that own a 2405 comment on how well it performs when connected to a video game console via s-video/component? I want to get this screen and consolidate all my screen needs to it (mac and game consoles; I don't watch TV).

I'll try mine out sometime tonight or tomorrow with a PS2 and a Gamecube. From what I hear it works very well... but I'll try it myself at let you know.
I'm waiting for the XBox 360 to get it hooked up to the component input running at HD resolutions :)

sorry! I deleted the page the other day... forgot I posted the link on here :)
I'll get some new pics up here in a little bit if you're interested

I can change contrast, brightness and gamma on my 17" LG 1730B display when connected by DVI. Dunno if this is just an oddity of this brand. Other adjustments like hight/pincushion etc. are greyed out, as expected.
