Need help on Dell 24"
hi gang. Very desperate for tech advice on the Dell 2405. I'm close to returning the display due to brightnes issues. I own a large format print shop, and just got a sweet new dual 2.7 loaded up for a PS workstation. I have been reading about the Dell displays for a couple months, and opted for the 24 rather than saving for a few more months for the Apple 30". As far as I can tell so far, these screens (I have the 2005 at home) are not calibratable "enough" for prepress/design work. The image quality when sitting in front the screen is just "wow". Clients freak out when the sit down and work with me. Colors jump off the screen, the blacks are black, and saturation is very good. Heck, to be honest, I'm getting better hue (color) than with my calibrated Electron blue. (I kid you not) heres the deal breaker for me. No mater what I do in calibration under OSX, I just cant get a decent gama level that even remotly resembles print. All my high rez PS files look at least 25-50% brighter than in print on our large format presses, or even our epson photo printers. So far i have done the following to tame this display...
1) Cranked the gama up to 2.2 (and beyond for gods sake) in calibration.
2) Turned down the brightnes on the display to Zero.
3) I have even experimented with cranking down the brightnes/luminence values while calibrating the color chanels under OSX's calibration utility, which cant have good overall impact on the color i would assume...
all to no avail. The reason this is so tough is it makes ANY type of photo editing imposible, as the mids all seem so freaking bright, that who ever knows how much to adjust for curves/levels etc. I would assume for FCP work as well, it's got to be imposible to do any color corection work with this display, unless you reley on the output display units I see in use.
Does anyone know how I can get a handle on this problem? Is there something in OSX that I could use to get a curtain over this supernova? I mean it's a strange problem, having a screen that is so freaking amazing to look at for sharpness, saturation, etc that the images just jump off the screen, but is so "good" or "pleasing" that clients are bumbed when they see there print output on our 12 color press that usually blows people away.
please any help appreciated...
