I prefer knobs and switches anyway to fumbling through menus to make the aircon stronger,
I really don't get it. Features like CarPlay is supposed to make driving safer, while VW and most other brands are removing knobs and replacing it with touch buttons that a driver has to take their eyes off the road to make changing.

Just silly.

The new MIB3 system is a complete disaster. I know several owners who would do anything for MIB2 like mine.

I’m all for EV’s but not sure why anyone would get this over a Tesla Model 3? Not sure how anyone can support the VW company after their diesel debacle as well. Just an awful company and mediocre cars.
Then get a Hyundai Ioniq 5. CarPlay and better pricing and fit/finish than Tesla.

Thankfully the Audi version of this vehicle (Q4 e-tron) retains a traditionally-sized gauge cluster, physical controls for HVAC and a more traditional gearshift (although still somewhat strange).

waiting on Audi to do it right in Q3 fashion

Volvo CX40 recharge is sweet but too pricy.

This is clearly paid for or some sort of ad. Every single review I've seen hasn't had any good things to say about the infotainment system in the ID.4.

This is a strange review. I've read many, mostly all negative and actually went to my local dealer and the system isn't good. Lots of bugs and the CarNet app is basically useless and the quality of the build and materials is suspect.
Not a paid article, of course...we don't do that.

Based on the early reviews, I was fully expecting to have major issues with lag on the infotainment system, and I was shocked that I had no problem with it. As I mentioned in the article, VW is rolling out OTA updates to improve things and will continue to do so, so perhaps my review car has gotten all of the latest upgrades.

The CarPlay interface inside the VW looks crappy. Honestly, who okay there being two clocks right next to each other? And showing 4G and 5Ge? This looks like a quick fix to sale cars. Also, who was driving? Why was the cruise set at 70 mph in a 60?

In the UK at least there is the id.3 which is similar size to the model 3. It’s a lot cheaper, is a hatchback and has CarPlay. The build quality is also (arguably) better although the materials used are cheap. Lease deals are also good, unlike the model 3.

Still I’m swaying towards the model 3, although losing CarPlay will be a hugely retrograde step I’m not sure I can live with.

£5K more than the Model 3 in the UK. We have an Ioniq which is a bargain, but for me the Ioniq 5 is too big - it’s not a Model 3 alternative but rather an id4 one.

VW hasn’t sold many EVs in America yet, so these are eligible for the $7,500 tax credit, and they cost about the same as the low-end Model 3, or slightly cheaper. Saving $7,500 is pretty good. I’m glad we’re seeing competition among EVs. Also, this is bigger than a model 3. So it’s actually quite a bit cheaper when you factor that in as well.

I have a 2016 VW e-Golf that ended up costing only about $17K (due to that tax credit) when I bought it brand new in 2016. It has CarPlay, so I’m wondering why this is considered to be a new thing. I love CarPlay; if your car doesn’t have it, make sure your next one does! (Tesla does not support CarPlay)

The Ioniq 5 looks absolutely brilliant. The problem is that people still have this archaic belief that Germans make the best cars. That hasn’t been true for a long time. The Koreans are king now and with pricing you can swallow.

The Hyundai is expected to be about the same price as the VW ID.4…

Fit and finish is huge for me and I've never seen a tesla where the front and back doors align at the window. Can't believe how nuts that is.

Also chargers. While Tesla has more chargers in quantity, the VW/ universal charging network has more locations.

Also style. I like how cars eb and flow, changing from year to year. Tesla is the most boring looking car on the road and every year its the same thing.

Also wheels and tires. Being someone who's experienced the switch between 15 to 16 to 18" rims makes me realize how much I want more rubber and less metal in my wheels and tires. Taking a pothole goes from uncomfortable to a bent rim, as experienced by seemingly every tesla owner.

I have a Model 3 and Y, but I usually rent cars when I drive 500+ miles. I’ve used carplay that way and I don’t like it at all. The only thing I like about it is that it uses the phone to process data. Most car infotainment systems get slower over time.

To me one of the biggest advatanges of the Tesla is the supercharger network. I’d hate to have to find a charger. With the Tesla it takes me 10 mins and I can get about a 65-70% charge if needed.

Can’t argue fit and finish. My Model Y Performance was bad. On the plus side Tesla fixed everything and I love the mobile service model.

Lmao you think the Audi *won’t* be pricy?! It will be exactly the same as the ID4 but with less tech as standard and cost $15k more because Audi.

The XC40 is probably worth the money since Volvo make good cars. The Audi won’t be and will leave you stranded by the side of the road just after the warranty expires.

Own 2 VWs and not a fan of the iD.4. At least you aren’t forced to buy that white steering wheel and cluster.

That’s only on the 1st edition. was at the dealer yesterday and they had a less expensive “pro” edition with titan black wheel and cluster. Looks much better.

Yep. I can’t simply justify the Audi pricing when you compare to the VWs built on the same platform. And while the Audi Turbo 4 engines have more oomph, they are basically the same engines, and “there’s a (chip) app for that.”
