+1. The Sony WH1000X4M sound so nice too, and weigh almost nothing!
XM4s sound disgusting, insane how many "youtube tech reviewers" that have no idea about audio praise them but anytime anyone who know what they're talking about say they sound like trash even for wireless headphones.

Don't get me wrong the Airpods Max are nowhere close good sennheiser's wired headphones but they are designed for different purpose. Airpods Max are still miles ahead of the muddy garbage that XM4s are.

Actually I very much like my APM's original case for its slimness. I put it into my backpack and don't attach it to the top of a Jeep, so it has all the protection it needs.

Also I'm quite happy to not have a box lying around my flat and that I do not have to deal with zippers.

I know I'm very much alone with this opinion, so I guess Apple will come up with something clunky with the next iteration.

Put me in the minority with the folks who actually like Apple's current case. It seemed stupid to me, but having the handle actually makes it easy to tote them and pull them out of my bag. I jam them in there with all kinds of gear and computers and nothing has ever happened. Mine are space grey, though. Larger cases almost never have a good strap and are hard to carry. Plus, fooling with a zipper just makes it harder to use them easily. My one qualm is when you pull the headphones our of the case, the ear cups clap together. It makes a noise, I don't like, but it doesn't cause damage.

It's pretty bad. I put my Max in this case, put it in my luggage, and when I opened it, the head band had dark smudges all over it. Not sure what caused it, but I do know if I had a case that covered the entire headphones, I'd be fine. Learned that lesson quickly.
My guess would be a pair of shoes? I don't know, never had an issue with that. For me, what gets my white headband and ear pads dirty is more the dinginess from everyday wearing. In hindsight I kind of wish I'd gotten Space Gray instead of Silver/White.

For what it's worth, the headband is actually pretty easy to clean as it turns out. I came across a guy on Reddit who claimed he was throwing his earpads into the washing machine with no ill effect!

I'd just like some nice leather earcups. Not necessarily from Apple, but I'd pay good money for some high quality leather cups (I have my doubts over what I've found on Amazon).

I can live with the sketchy standard Apple case; it's down in my bag as it is, separated from everything else in the bag. But oh how I loved the leather cups on my Sennheiser headphones.

In case you didn't know, XM4s are noise cancelling headphones. This means that they are meant to be worn in loud environments. As good as noise cancelling is these days, the remaining noise is still orders of magnitudes more prominent than any difference in quality you imagine to be hearing.

If you normally listen to music in your Alaska cabin, buy a pair of mid-range, open-backed headphones that sound way better than Apple's. And for the price difference you can still afford another pair of NC headphones.

Perhaps you did not play with the equalizer in the Sony App, it takes some time to find the sweet spot, it's there, you just need to find it.

I must disagree with the conclusion on the zipper being "normal". A quality-designed zipper makes a big difference in the experience of opening and closing it. I've been frustrated with so many zippers on jackets and other items because they are poorly-designed. I appreciate that Woolnut cares enough to make sure they've used a zipper that will be reliable over the test of time. Yes, that matters. Not two weeks, but 20 years.

This is a lot like the juggle I had before: a pair of open-backed Grados which sounded splendid but have absolutely zero isolation, and a pair of Bose which cancelled a decent amount of noise in my environment but sounded... ok. I'd switch between the two throughout the day, depending on my needs and frankly it was a PITA.

Then I got the AirPods Max and to my ear they sound quite close to the Grados in transparency mode, and give me way more silence (and sound much better) in noise-cancelling mode than the Bose. Two birds, one stone. VERY much worth the price on every level from sound quality to incredible build quality to ease of integration with my Apple stuff.

I did have black shoes in my luggage, so that could be it. Wish I had gotten the space gray too.

I don't know why so many people thinks that AirPods Max need a carrying case. What exactly are you protecting it from? Its Aluminum ear cups are as solid as a MacBook and everything else is stainless steel. I've been using it without a case for months without any issues. There is very little that can be damaged by squishing or bending during normal backpack carrying, unlike the XM4's plastic construction which developed creaks as I used it more and more despite using the included case.

I have this case and I’m very happy with it. Whilst it is great for a trip (I did the first one last week as not so much travel right now!), the other use case is sitting on your desk and holding the headphones when not in use (and the nice look helps with that). I know it is trivial, but much easier to drop into this case than the supplied one. This addresses my major gripe with the AirPods Max - having to put it back into a case to maintain a decent standby. My Nura’s last months without a charge, but of course the AirPods Max need a case ! Feels like some one in product design thought “let’s make all AirPods have to go back into the case” - for non-max devices that makes sense as you get the benefit of restoring the charge, in the case of the Max you just preserve it !!

I wish there was a case large enough that allowed me to keep the arms slightly extended rather that retracting them every time I want to store them.
Exactly. I've had my doubts around the Smart Case that came with my APM's, but for me, in my usage, I very rarely need any case. When at home, I just put the headphones down on my desk or on top of my Ipad. When traveling - I keep them on my head, and in some rare occasions I store them in the Smart Case in my backpack.

I'm not defending Apples choice here - the Smart Case is a poorly designed product. But after almost a year of ownership of the APM's, it's a way less big problem than I expected.

At least I got the impression if you live in a modern indoor environment the original case should be perfectly fine.

Wonder what the rest of you are doing, that you need a sturdier case.

It's overpriced and not designed very well. Seen better on Amazon.

You'd be better being able to store with the Smart Case on the headphones to allow for power save mode and I would not trust that strap for the charger - looks like it'd come loose and scratch your headphones if travelling.

I would like Apple to make something like this and make us cringe with their pricing of the case.
