You have a point, but Apple's senior executives did confirm that the iPhone is getting USB-C to comply with EU laws..unlike with micro-USB, adapters aren't allowed so there's no loophole for them to follow. Your second point is confusing, most hackers are not people in your close vicinity, they could be striking from anywhere in the world. The people snatching iPhones and watching the PIN before they do so are using low-tech techniques, not the sort of sophisticated approaches that cracking a hardware key would require.

1. This is the USA, not the EU.

2. The biggest hackers are the FBI, CIA, and foreign national spies trying to get into phones they target of people for various reasons, many of them illegal.

While I do think adding this capability is a good thing, iPhones have a built-in two factor authentication capability that Apple has continued to ignore for a decade.

Why can I not configure my iPhone to require BOTH a passcode AND biometric ID instead of one or the other? It's so obvious and simple, and yet Apple seems to think that one or the other is sufficient.

Stupid, Apple. Very stupid.

Because the Lightning port is on its way out.
Maybe for the upper echelon of Apple purchasers but it’s foolish to imagine it won’t be around in supported devices for the next 7 years.

Also two ports are better than one.

Hi.

When using those Yubikeys with Apple, Google and so on (via FIDO2) I wonder, why they don't ask everytime for the FIDO2 PIN? I registered a PIN - with account creation it also asks for this FIDO2 PIN. But when logging in, it doesn't ask for the PIN - I thought, it will always ask - but it isn't the case?!

Totally the same experience. Purchased four. All four broke. Terrible.
Hm, I’ve had one on my keychain for over a year, I’m not gentle with it, I actually use the set of keys for retriever dog training, and mine works fine. Of course just anecdotal, but I’m curious which part of yours broke?

I believe the pin is used to do any modifications to the key. The regular authentication challenge-response does not modify the key.

Of course, my observations are anecdotal as well.

The plastic casing on all four of mine broke. One became completely inoperable refusing to acknowledge touch. One became permanently stuck on. I stopped using the other two in light of this. Both of those were already broken, too.

I didn’t use them on a key ring at all, just kept them on a small loop of paracord and carried some with me when away from desk.

Fortunately vast majority of people aren’t as special as they think. Those people could care less about them/us.

I've had 3-4 break for me, and another 2-3 break for other people. Pieces of that plastic just break off and at the end, you are just left with a bare bones PCB.

And just in case you or someone else lost access to your keys, don't be afraid:
All that is needed is an iPhone / iPad already authorized to your Apple account and the code to unlock it.
With phone and code you can remove the keys, do whatever you want and add them back to make you feel safe.

Ridiculous.

Will these work with an adapte? For instance, a USB-C to Lighting. If I got a Yubico key with USB-C and the iPad has a Lighting port, will I be able to use an adaptor?
There are Fido keys that have Lightning connectors (e.g. the Yubikey 5Ci).

It’s pretty bad idea to buy anything with Lightning connector nowadays? Lighting is dying. Why not use NFC interface until all devices are upgraded to USB-C versions?

Exactly, was going to say the same, the 5Ci that has both lighting and USB-C. From reading, there were some anecdotal comments on its fragility though anything can be prone to damage if not treated appropriately.

I have a keychain with a number of Yubikeys. From Generation 2 to Generation 5. I also have the USB-C Yubikey. And I had added the lightning 5Ci to the same keychain. All the other Yubikeys had no issues over the years. After the 3rd 5Ci broke down, and the other users I had given them to had it broken as well, I no longer recommend the 5Cis.

Yes, prone to getting damaged whilst on a keychain. That's what many were writing about when I was doing my research about the 5Ci.
