Yesterday I googled 'new mac mini' on Google Australia and a feature ad - probably old - for the Aus. Apple store came up saying "Latest mac mini at the Applestore online". I tried again a few hours later and it had been taken down.... wish I took a screenshot of that. heheh

Was it the new 1.5 that was listed on the site? Of so it does show that Apple is getting ready for the real announcement.

No, the 1.42. I assume the reference to 'Latest' was just in the wording of an old ad, but they decided to take it down so people like me couldn't ask for the "Latest" one...

Is there anything unusual with this news? I know that the same promotion had done in some other countries and already finished. Maybe those minis returned through the same promotion now shipping to my country? Is that possible?

Good to see that Apple is still using the promotion. The specs are for the current generation, no change really.

I'm sure that they are shipping a brand new Mac mini to a customers who order one. Those that are retuned would be sold in the special area as a refurb.

You're probably not getting the returned minis. From my experience, other countries seem to get the latest Apple goods after the US. For example, the iPod nano just started shipping here. Apple is probably just trying to move the current stock of mac minis.

Hmmm thanks guys, i'm thinking about getting my first mac but can't afford up to the PowerMacs for now, i'm a recording artist and studying about sound engineering in Conservatory of Istanbul Technicial University.

I'll use the mini for everyday tasks so i'll give it a try. Maybe here's not the right place to ask but any experinces with Logic Pro/Express with mini? It's not matter if not able to work with 128+ channel audio with 10 effects each on every tracks, yeah i know it's impossible with it but i'm planning to totally switch to a mac (guess that's a PowerMac after the Intel transition). It should be so nice if i can learn some Logic basics with that tiny lovely mini.

(Low latency audio interface is not an issue for me cause i've an M-Audio Firewire Solo(400) and it has rock-solid driver support for both platforms.)

Sorry for the "mini" :p threadhijack, forgive me..

This is a pain, I really wanted to order a Mac Mini this week but now I am holding off as I want the higher spec version.

I expect bieng in the UK I will have to wait even longer for a newer model... :(

Well, you can't have your cake and eat it too. ;) If you absolutely need a machine right now, you should buy one. If you want the new specs, you'll have to wait, it's just that simple. Many people are in the same boat right now with the PowerBooks and PowerMacs as well - they want to buy a machine now, but want the new ones which are rumored to be released soon.

That's just the way it goes! Happens all the time...

Waiting for the official release of the Mini is getting more difficult each day :)
Last night I spent several hours working with my digital camera and Windows trying to organize my pictures for uploading to a website. It is soo painful :)

I really hope they make the announcement tomorrow.. If they don't it will be really tempting to order a mini anyway since I am ordering it BTO (gotta have 1GB of RAM) and from what I have seen in most forums it seems as though Apple is shipping the updated minis to the folks who have purchased online over the last week or two...

Something to think about with all the updates. If you live near an Apple Store, there are deals to have for the asking. It is just a matter of asking, be polite.

Even though I am not in the market myself, I hope so too! ;)

Good to see the 100 gig HDD option. I wonder if that option always gets you a new rev
If only we knew if the 100 gig option was a 5400 or a 4200 speed HD...
One of the real reasons why I am waiting for the officially released specs of the updated mini, is that I do not want a 4200 if I can avoid it.. Based on some of the benchmarks I have seen posted, the 80GB 4200 speed hard drive on the Mac mini is one of its low points...

You really think the 100 gig will be 4200? I think if they have upgraded the rest of the line to 5400 then the 100 gig will be also...but I would also wait for something official to get the better machine.

I really think the 100gb drive is 5400, but like you, I really want to see the official specs.. For sometime now, many of the low-end Mac mini buyers were getting a 5400 40gb HD vs. a 4200 40gb HD..

At this point, nobody really knows what Apple is doing....

As I mentioned before, I needed a mac mini this week because I am flying out to my parents place to setup a new mac. Therefore, the way in which apple went about this "update" was inconvinient for me. I didn't want to give them a mac mini without a 5400 RPM hard drive. Disk performance is just not up to par with a 4200 RPM disk.

So today I went on a quest to find an updated mini. The first store I went to was the Rosedale store in Roseville, MN. The manager their was not accomodating at all. I asked if she would be willing to go in back and get me the newest mac mini they had. She stated that there was absolutely no way to tell how new a mini is by the box. So I explained the production week in the serial number to her and she said that she was not going to have one of her employees look through their stock of mac minis with superdrives just to find the newest one. I was ready to pay $700 for the newest one they had and that was the response I got. So I told her to just to back and get me one then. She grabbed one and it was week 27 which was very likely the older model, so I told her I didn't want it if she wasn't going to make the effort of getting me the newest one they had. She wasn't goign to check so I walked out.

Then, I went to the Mall of America store. They wouldn't confirm that they had any upgraded minis but they said they had some pretty new ones. So I had him bring one up. It was week 37, so I bought it. So I got home and opened it up. It has the 1.5 ghz processor, Seagate 5400 RPM 8MB cache HD, & the dual layer DVD burner. I'm going to upgrade it to 1GB as well.

Just thought i'd let everyone know that some stores do have them, but I don't know how much of an effort they will make to get you one. I can also confirm that the 5400 RPM HD makes a significant performance difference in the mini. My sister has one with the slower drive and it is definately noticable with any disk intesive task.

Now here's a question. What happens when it needs service? Let's say I need a new HD and they put in a 4200 RPM one because that's what I was guaranteed to begin with. I will not be a happy camper. I really hope that they repair the mini to it's shipped state..not just to what the specifications stated.

I just ordered another mac mini (after returning a 1.42 Superdrive model a week ago) through apple via telephone. The serial on that one was YM529xxxxxx. I asked the sales person a multitude of questions, hoping to get a hint of the update. No luck. He claimed that Apple is in fact getting a lot of calls on this issue, but could NOT confirm the rumors. He DID say though, that online and/or phone orders always get the newest and most updated hardware, so the chances of me getting an updated model were very good, especially if I built one to order. So that's what I did. I ordered the "1.42 Superdrive" (ha...ha...) model, and I added a 56k modem to my order (so I can use my mini as my fax machine). So I am hoping that I get a new 1.5, especially after just paying the 10% restocking fee. So here is my question. My new serial # starts with a "G8540xxxxxx". Am I correct in saying that my new machine was manufactured in the 40th week of 2005? I can only assume (HOPE!) that this machine will be an updated model.

Did you or someone you know get an updated mini?

So... we've all seen the screen shots of these new specs, but how many people have actually gotten one of these Super Mac Minis?

It would do the forum well, post your specs... if you've ordered a mini in the last week. If you got a super mini or not, gives us all an idea of whats going on.

.....Super being the 64meg video card, and 8x dvdr.

Yes, you are correct, your mini was built in the 40th week of 05 (wow, that is really new!). The G8 should be the production facility, and I have no idea where that is (all the souped up mini's I have seen annotated YM between weeks 35 and on..) I was already planning on buying my mini BTO, so you have to let us know if you get the updated one! I am hoping that they will announce the new mini's sometime next week... Good luck and let us know!

I'm fading... I just know in Australia it'll take ages to get the latest stock - I've been peeking through display cases at serial numbers, seeing 29s and 32s - and now i'm starting to look at alternatives. I'm in job transition and need some more power at home right now, so I'm looking at used macs - the suspense is just getting too much! Pity, cause that cute little mini was so appealing for a while. (yeh, sure call me fickle, but... maybe i'll just hide a G4 tower with airport behind the sofa.

Does anyone know if it would be possible to get two minis and join them in a 'grid' type setup with software to utilise dual processors?

My advice to you is to wait until the middle of next week. Apple is making some major announcement next week and many people think that they may also announce updates across many of the Mac lines... I am waiting until next Thursday until I purchase...

I went asking for the high-end mac mini in town but not one reseller had them in stock, all saying that Apple was having difficulties delivering and that they would receive new mac minis next week. So I'm pretty sure that if I would order one now I'd receive the 1.5, but I'll still await the official announcement. Perhaps something much better than a mini will be coming out :D

I'm in deep...

Okay, so I bought a wireless Macally mouse today, so now I have no choice but to order my mini next week ;)

I really think that they will officially announce the upgraded mini's next week and if they don't I am buying one anyway and not looking back...

Now for a keyboard... Any recommendations from you die hard Mac fans? I am retireing my 5+ year old Microsoft mouse and keyboard...

I do not want a big honking keyboard so I am thinking of purchasing either the standard Apple keyboard, or a Macally iKey or icekey...

I also am going to purchase the Belkin 4 port USB hub which the mini sits directly on to extend the number of usb 2.0 ports that I will have. I can already tell that having only two ports would have been an issue, and not having ports in the front of the mini would have driven me crazy...

What city are you in? I'm curious if it is the same in the same boat in So. California.
