after a crash in a jet-powered car

Oooooh nasty. though it'd look unbelievably ace on your gravestone.

The fact that he was regaining consciousness is a good sign though.

Apparently he was going for the landspeed record or something!

I hope Hammond will be ok. I love Top Gear for there comedy even though they are harsh on American vehicles.

According to Wiki.

He was severely injured in a car crash while filming for Top Gear on 20 September 2006 at a former RAF airfield near York. He was driving a jet powered car capable of travelling at 280mph in an attempt to break the land speed record for England. He is being treated at Leeds General Infirmary and is currently in a critical condition. [2] BBC reports suggest that he was taken from the crash scene unconscious and taken to the specialist neurological unit at Leeds General Infirmary. The ambulance service is reported to have said Richard began to regain conciousness upon arrival at the hospital. However, Leeds General Infirmary have released a statement indicating that he is still in a critical condition.

Doesn't sound good.

*lights blue touch paper*

Its true though American cars are a bit poo :D

Gawd I hope the poor guy's okay. He is one of the best presenters on TV at the moment...

Hate to lose a second top-notch host in just a couple of weeks. Hopefully he'll be okay, but it sounds like even if he recovers, it might be a long and complex journey back to hosting Top Gear. :(

I really do hope he's OK. I find Top Gear one of the most entertaining programmes on TV, despite not knowing anything about cars.

Lets hope this is just a scare from God telling him not to make anything as awful as The Afternoon Show (with that Sue from Light Lunch) ever again?

Just thinking about it. This is another 'one' caught on film.

Hopefully he will pull through though!

from sky news:

"Firefighter Dave Ogden, who witnessed the crash, told Sky News that the 36-year-old presenter was able to speak as he was taken out of the wreckage of the car.
Inspector Mike Thompson, of North Yorkshire Police, said officers were dealing with the incident at the airfield northeast of York where the filming was taking place.

He said: "At 5.45pm this evening we received a report via the fire service of a male person trapped in what was described as an overturned jet car which had been driven on the airfield.

"The male occupant has received serious injuries and has been airlifted to hospital at Leeds."

"...reportedly driving a jet-powered Vampire car when it overturned. Mr Hammond was said to have been reaching speeds of up to 280mph as the accident happened."

this is really sad news. he is one of the best presenters on tv at the moment and he seems a really nice guy also. it sounds pretty bad - there would have been more released if it wasnt as bad as it sounds.

lets all just hope he gets better; i have a feeling that he wont be on top gear again but i seriously hope i am wrong.

I rather like Sue from Light Lunch.

I thought this was sad though — I don't watch Top Gear or owt, but he seems like a nice chap. Hope he's ok.

I hope he recovers and they learn their lesson to purge the stupid stuff from an otherwise great show.

Also, regardless of the outcome I hope they show their normal balls and air the footage.

Damn....!

Top gear is my favorite TV show.. ever!
Richard Hammond is one of the major ingredients why the show is so successful.

Let's hope he fully recovers!

EDIT: from Sky News

He was reportedly trying to set a new land speed record for Britain in a jet-powered Vampire car when it overturned.

Mr Hammond was said to have been reaching speeds of up to 280mph as the accident happened.

Worrying that the profile of him on the BBC news site sounds more like an obituary.

He's a bit annoying at times, bit too much energy, but Top Gear is great because of the team so it'll be a shame if he doesn't return anytime soon.

on the bbc news website it basically reads like they are writing his obituary. not good :(

I have that feeling too... :(

Sky's verison is different. Fingers crossed.

BTW, I have a Top Gear on at this moment. watching the October 31st 2004 (Season 5, Episode 2) show.

Good luck, Hammond.
