Wow, what a shock!

I hope it isn't as bad as some make it out to be...I wonder if this accident will change the future of the show at all, it's been running awhile but it doesn't seem to be waning in popularity all that much.

Fingers crossed that he makes a complete recovery.

There was a lot of coverage of the accident on the BBC's Breakfast show this morning, with a reporter stationed outside the hospital and everything.

I'm with everyone else in hoping Richard makes a full recovery. He's one of those presenters whose enthusiasm for what he does is really infectious, we could do with a few more with his passion.

Not to make light of the subject but, who'd have thought these would go that fast?

BBC reports looking a bit more positive - he's in a 'stable' condition, but they also say that the dragster buried itself ito the ground! Really hope he recovers quickly.

I was surprised at how open the cockpit was though - i'd want more roof if I were going 300mph

BBC radio has said he has suffered "a significant brain injury". :( "But docs are optimistic of a good recovery."

Cmon Hamster!!!

Though... as Sky News have pointed out, the doctors have said "good" not "full" recovery. Eddie Kidd made a "good" recovery from his '96 accident too.

I suspect that unless he makes a "full" recovery, then the last series of Top Gear was just that... the last, at least in its current format.

Aye the BBC news just spoke about a brain injury. I really hope he's ok. Though I know nothing about cars and really couldn't care less about them - Top Gear is an absurdly entertaining show to watch and the presenters are just excellent.

Good luck Richard.

...I was just over in Leeds.

That's just what I thought when I heard that.

Terribly sad news for The Hamster and his family. I really hope that he makes a speedy recovery as the world would be a slightly duller place without him around making us smile.

There is a website set up for donations to the air ambulance service that took Richard to hospital and the response has been incredible so far. You can donate and leave a message for Richard here:

They characterize it as a "significant brain injury" although that doesn't rule out a total recovery. If it is swelling then the 24-48 hours will determine everything. Hope his condition improves quickly.

On a side note, the BBC has a little link article titled " Top Gear's chequered past", which is, I think, a bit of a cheap shot at this point. Not surprised, but this will be an "I told you so" moment for "third gear" or other critics of the show.

Mr Clarkson told the Sun newspaper that he had insulted Mr Hammond's driving skills - prompting a smile from Mr Hammond.

:p :p :p :p

Come on fella, there's more work to be done yet. :)

News today seems to be that neurologists have noted that the fact he was conscious after the crash is an encouraging sign.

I suppose the true extent of the injury will only be known once swelling has reduced. I really hope The Hamster pulls through, and I've got my fingers crossed for a full recovery, not just for us as viewers but also for his family.

hahaha, yea I read that in the paper "...you're a c**p driver" and "he's still the same annoying **** I know and love". There's something quite beautiful about that.

Has Hammond presented Have I got News For You yet? I bet he'd be good.

Also from that story:

BBC said:
He [Clarkson] also said the presenter had no visible injuries following the ordeal he had been through other than a black eye.

I guess it's way too early to tell how bad any brain injury is and a "good recovery" is the doctor's playing it on the safe side?

A black eye is not neccesarily a good thing. It could be a sign of a serious brain infarct. Remember guys - paralysis is probably not the most serious thing that could happen to him - he could have had a traumatic cranial haemorrhage leading to neurological defects - which could be very serious indeed.

We are rooting for you Hammond

Top Gear is the best car programme in Saudi, with lots of followers! We even have the magnet cars on our fridge!

We are rooting for you Hammond! We have your magnet face on our fridge, next to our kids photo's! You are family!!

The fact that he is out if intensive care is a very good sign, I feel a lot more optomisitic about a full recovery. Good news indeed.
