have any of you guys had an apple authorized service provider replace a hard drive on a macbook pro (that wasn't warranty work)? if so how much did they charge you?

i'm wondering how much it would cost if i were to upgrade my hard drive later on without voiding the warranty.

yes, i could do it myself, but i don't want to take the risk.

According to the Apple Executive Relations guy I've talked to before, it's $80/hour.

So probably $80 to change your hard drive.

Do they ship on weekends? I really should just calm down and stop checking this forum and my order status every fifteen minutes. Oy!

Every 15 minutes?! Weirdo!

Why not every 10 like me?! :p Jk. I can't wait until Moday to see what happens!

Shipping will not -start- on the weekends. If your order was shipped before the weekend, it will still move around during that time. Thats how I understand it at least.

I think your right about it still moving around on weekends, as I just checked my fedex tracking again which said it arrived in Alaska this morning and it now says departed Alaska at 6:48pm today! It says estimated delivery to me here in FL on 6-13. Getting closer.....

So, who here ordered the 7200rpm drive for the 15" MBP and is waiting it out?

I did not get the 7200rpm drive when I ordered. I had it configured that way and then noticed the ridiculous delivery date listed so I went back and chose the 5400 standard one which changed the ship date time to 3 days. All in all I do not know the model drive or specs thats in the 5400rpm macbook pro, but I do know that alot of the modern 5400 rpm drives are splitting hairs in performance now with the 7200rpm ones. Of course the 7200rpm drives are a bit quicker in some areas still, but the differences are almost negligible and the battery life on the 5400's is definately better. So you have pros and cons on both sides but I probably would have placed my order for the 7200rpm anyhow had it not been for the crazy shipping time frame. Hard to believe that a simple 7200rpm drive would take so long. It is like they did not produce very many of those or something.

Moi.

To me, given similar hardware the 5400 RPM drive slows things down enough where I do notice the difference (application launching, etc.). Not a lot, but just perceptable enough to annoy me...

I have a 7200 RPM Seagate arriving tomorrow via Transintl.com ($199). I was looking at bechmarks for this drive and other via Tom's Hardware:

http://www23.tomshardware.com/storage25.html

and noticed that the Western Digital Scorpio 250GB (which should be available in a week or two) is very close in performance to the Seagate but has 90 GB more capacity.

Speeds of these two drives are fist and second in every category, except the "Random Access Time" is much lower for the Western Digital. Is this the category that will affect normal disk operation?

Not yet! It better come today or I'm am calling in a furry! I ordered almost a week ago. They took my money. What are they waiting for?!

Hmmm....

I called apple, and they said that the info on my email for my 17" hi res with the 7200rpm drive, which was the following, is the most accurate info:

Ships by:
Jul 18
Delivers by:
Jul 24

I asked why the store now says 2-4d shipping with the same config and the support person said the store info was not accurate.

So, I guess we'll see if anyone actually gets their mac with this config!

Well, when I called on Friday they told me that they were in stock (the rep on the phone even called a "colleague" to confirm what we were both seeing on the store site was true). He told me that the charge to my bank was evidence that it was ready to ship. So, he said give it 48-72 hours (not sure if he was counting the weekend in that, if so it's been nearly 72 hours). He said if I didn't get the email from Apple about it shipping to call back. So, I may be on the phone again here in a few.

Good luck with yours!

Yeah I've gotten the "pre-auth" on my credit card. Did you get an actual charge on your card or was it a "pending" one?

I wannnnntsssss it my presssscccious!!!! (spoken ala Gollum)

I don't know. I used my card linked to my checking account. It still states that the charge is "In Progress", as does the charge for the iPod sitting at home on my bed. Funny how FedEx is faster at shipping then the bank is at processing a transaction. It shows both as "intraday debits". Once it goes through it will switch over to just a debit charge. I just wish SOMETHING would happen. I'm sick of waiting!

I just ordered the 17" High-Res Matte with 4GB RAM and the 160GB 7,200RPM hard drive today and it says that it is shipping between June 13th and June 15th...the online store appears to be right with the "2-4 business days"...

If you tell me that yours ships before mine, I'll tell you I hate you. :p Why is Apple doing this to me?!

Call 'em up! I would tell them that the timeline being quoted on the website is verified according to other people who have ordered. It's ridiculous to think that you could cancel and replace your order today and get it quicker. I gotta say I'm pretty impressed with Apple Customer Service so far...you can tell right away on the phone if it's someone competent or not.

They'll hook you up!

I've tried calling 5 times now. That one guy that told me to call back if I haven't recieved notification in 72 hours was the only one who knew anything. I'm still not showing any signs other than a charge to my bank account in the amount of $3003.32 last Friday morning. It's still as of 5 minutes ago sitting in the "in progress" stage, meaning the transaction is being processed. I'm hoping that it'll clear tonight and they will ship tomorrow. This is really making me mad. I have been tempted to cancel and reorder, but I've already got an iPod sitting at home that needs to stay with this computer order so I can file for the rebate. Hmmm....I'm beginning to strongly dislike Apple!!!

Any news?

Is there any news on the status of the 7200rpm drives for the 15" ones??

I know it's only been a week, but the wait is painful. The 17" people had a nice surprise, I was hoping for the same sort of surprise! :D

Yeah people keep saying - "my one is shipping" and then a couple of posts later its "oh but it was a 17inch".

Really irritating, only 15inch are effected by the 4-6 weeks wait and I since we haven't heard anything from anyone with 15inch and 7200rpm drive it must be that everyone is still waiting :(

Yeah, only the 15" people are still waiting. By the time it comes we might not want it anymore! hahaha!

Just kidding of course! The wait is killing me.

Has anyone had any luck finding out a cause for delay? It seems odd that the 17" isn't seeing the same delay for the 7200rpm drive. They obviously have the 7200rpm drives in stock. Could there be technical issues with the 15" MBP?

I ordered mine "Jun 5, 2007 at 08:45 AM PDT". Still showing "Ships by: Jul 18". I'm anxious to get my first mac. I plan on getting macs for the rest of my family but at this rate, who knows.
