One year after launching a "Ring in the New Year" challenge for Apple Watch owners, Apple today is rolling out the challenge again for 2018. The challenge's rules appear slightly similar to last year, requiring you to close all three Activity rings for seven days in a row in January. During the previous challenge, you had to accomplish the same goal coupled with the specific requirement of the Activity streak lasting from a Monday to a Sunday.

Once you complete the task you'll get a special Apple Watch achievement, which has been designed liked the 2017 award. Apple has been consistently launching Apple Watch challenges for its users, most recently including Thanksgiving, Veterans Day, Mother's Day, Earth Day, and even a challenge designed to celebrate America's national parks.

Apple Watch owners in the United States should start noticing the challenge appearing on their Apple Watch and within the Activity iOS app today. For users in other countries, the challenge began appearing yesterday.

I've closed all three rings since getting my watch on Oct. 2. But yesterday I almost didn't because I had so many things with the family going on and I was almost resentful that I had the streak hanging over my head (I only managed to close it while doing jumping jacks while watching a movie with my daughter). This new incentive came at a perfect time. I really like these challenges.

I work in front of a computer all day. I'm more active in the summer... I usually set my red ring to 650 calories.
But in the winter, I go out less often... thus I do not reach this 650 goal everyday. I'm tempted to just lower it down to a level that I can usually reach when I do a quick 20 minutes exercises in the morning (which should be around 550).

What is it set for you?

I find the colder environment I live in to motivate me more to push through it and not be trapped indoors. It was -5 Fahrenheit when I went for a run the other day. My today Will 11 degrees Fahrenheit. I like to train for all environments, the Watch is the tool behind my workouts.

I agree the challenges are great. I had a 740 day streak going with all three rings - but lost it when my iPhone 7 bricked - and even though my phone had backed up to the cloud that night (after all rings closed) - because the watch didn’t unpair when the phone bricked, I lost a half a day of data. Streak over. Knowing it can all go down the drain makes me way less concerned about the rings - which is too bad. I wish all activity went straight to the Cloud in real time, but that’s not how it works.

I got mine already! Who doesn't love a bug or two?
Ugh. Similarly, I had missed the October special achievement (by kind of a long shot) but then when I got my November one, the October one decided to retroactively unlock itself.
These achievement bugs are the worst because they hurt my feelings. I don't want that unearned trophy, dangit! I really hope they release a fix that will recalculate the metrics and take it away from me again :p

[doublepost=1514493600][/doublepost]Apple support on Twitter contacted me about this. Clearly it's not supposed to happen yet.

I, too, have always been awarded the achievement. I suspect it's looking at the activity data from one month earlier than it should be, like my similarly-bugged December Challenge achievement that's showing total calories burnt from November.

I know exactly what you mean, but for different reasons... I tried so hard NOT to get the Personal November acheivmant, which messed up the colorful order of all the others, but ended up getting it anyways on December 1st :/
It was miles based and I made sure I didnt hit the count but there it was, dated November 1st at the back. And now this mess with the New Years challenge, which I also got prematurely.
I wanted to contact support for this, but it seems like a waste of everybody’s time for such a silly little issue. But I Do hope someone will fix these bugs someday...

Yep, jumping jacks at 11pm. Done that :)

Yes both my wife and I got the achievement after closing all three rings today.
Just closed all three rings and, yep, there's my 2018 award.

That was easy!

(same as everyone else - no 'engraving' on the back)

What a year for buggy software. It's somewhat understandable with there being SO MANY NEW THINGS introduced this year, requiring a preposterous amount of engineering effort, but I really hope 2018 brings a stability focus.

This month 13 bug is breaking everything activity related. All my medals and achievements are all off now. Including being awarded this one early.

Evidently, I rang in the new year early last night  When I received it, it had December 28, 2017 engraved on the back, but that engraving has now disappeared in the morning.

Initially I set it fairly high, but then felt annoyed that it didn’t allow for rest days so I couldn’t get a streak going. I’ve since set it to 500 which is achievable for me on a rest day and my goal for workout days is to get the 200% move goal achievement.

Went on a long hike yesterday, which was apparently enough to earn the 2018 New Year Challenge badge. No name. Wouldn't surprise me at all if this was reset on Tuesday morning.
