Is that worth $30? I want a program where I stick the dvd in push 1 or 2 buttons and in burns it to an itunes format. for some reason i cant do handbrake. Thanks

Open your Handbrake, shove a DVD into the drive, after HB reads it, click on toggle presets, select iPad, click start. When HB finishes, open iTunes, click File, add to library, select your new file, and go with it.

If you are still having problems leave me a message.

Handbrake and the iPad profile seems to reduce the volume really badly, there is no volume boost button....sometimes with BT headphones on while travelling to work on the train I just can not hear the film.

Would like a dvd ripper that includes some kind of volume boost.

I was messing with this all weekend and my complaint with Handbrake is that it is defeated by the encryption on many of my DVDs (e.g. The Big Lebowski). I had to use the free part of DVDFab's Decrypter to get the movie off the disc as VOB and then use Handbrake to convert it. These are movies I own so I just want to be able to select a few for my iPad when traveling and have them ready to go on my 1TB iTunes drive.

Am I using Handbrake incorrectly?

I have the exact same problem with my DVDs. I have the latest version of VLC for the decryption, but these DVDs don't work on VLC either.

is ripping my dvds to ipad, ipod legal? I think i already know the answer since apple forums won't allow the conversation, so I guess my real question is...is there anyway to get caught using handbrake for this purpose?

I don't want to end up in court like those people were for sharing songs in limewire....

might be a stupid question since i am not sharing and just converting the format of my own dvds, but just thought i would ask some more experienced users......ty

As long as you own and bought the movies as well as you don't share them (upload them) online or give it to friends you are fine as its used for your private purposes only

Handbrake won't run without VLC installed? Where does VLC come in to play in conjunction with or as opposed to Handbrake?

Handbrake cannot decode the DVD on it's own, VLC can decode the DVD so Handbrake needs VLC to decode the DVD.

Recently, I have become a big fan of the free program, MakeMKV, for the first step of decrypting and copying the DVD (or BluRay). It generates one ".mkv" file per title at the original compression level of the DVD.

These files are big (7-8 GB), so I usually use HandBrake to re-encode them to smaller .m4v files. These days I use the AppleTV2 preset for everything. DVD's usually compress to under 1.5GB, BluRays to 2.5-3GB.

Is there an easy step by step instructions on how to rip dvds and then put it on your ipad? I downloaded handbrake and VLC on my comp and have VLC on my ipad. I tried doing it but I didn't know what settings to use on handbrake. Thanks!!!

There are many instructions available online.. just google them. But in a nutshell, it's a 2 step process:
  1. decrypt dvd onto your hard drive with "AnyDVD" for PC or "RipIT" if you're on a Mac.
  2. Create your compressed MP4 file using Handbrake, pointing it to your ripped dvd you created in step 1.

That all depends if you live on a small offshore island in the Caribbean ;)

But seriously, if you own the DVD then I do believe in this here United States of Magnanimous http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1L3eeC2lJZs America, you are legally entitled to create a backup copy of your DVD for personal viewing.

...which is NOT the same as compressing for an iPad. So...no. This isn't legal. Altering the video is not "making a backup" of the video.

Want proof? Why do you think Handbrake requires you to download VLC? Why don't they just build that stuff into Handbrake?

It's because what Handbrake + VLC do together is illegal. But if the functions are split into 2 programs then neither one of them can get in trouble. Neither Handbrake nor VLC has the ability to break the law. If YOU happen to combine them...well that's not their fault... ;)

Handbrake

Been using Handbrake to rip all of my kids movies onto the Ipad. Prior to this wonderful program being installed we went through at least 3 copies of Shrek!

Read the user guide with Handbrake, install VLC, pop disk in and shut down any other DVD apps that start up. You really just want Handbrake running. It should take the length of the movie (1.25hrs etc) to rip.

Excellent results on every movie I've tried. This is a great tool and I don't feel a bit bad about using it (we purchased the DVD why shouldn't we put it on the ipad?)

Cheers!

I'm currently trying a bunch of different options. I like both MTR and RipIt, but both only handle one disc at a time and I've decided it's time to backup my full, large, collection.

The problem with the iPad is the aspect ratio of 4:3 (aka Full Screen). Movies these days are shot in Widescreen. So, to watch it in Widescreen, you need to compress the video to a resolution of 1024 x 576.

1280 width for a screen 1024 wide ?

Most of my videos are 1280x720 or 1920x1200 in source, and the iPad screen is 1024x768. I think the iPad lets you choose between horizontal black bars and cropping off the edges though,

to all those that recommended handbrake:

is there any reason to download nice video if you can't hear it? is there any solving of the riddle of handbrake not giving results with very good audio? I have searched all over and cannot find any settings for handbrake that allow for proper volume levels

any help?

dont mess with the audio, check what the video should be at and set that up then the audio should be lined up, if you cant hear it the problem is most likely not handbrake or you accidently changed somthing, in that case i cant help you

I don't quite understand when you say "check what the video should be at", i use the settings that are default and the video looks fantastic. I just can barely hear the audio on my ipad.

I've read about how handbrake has an ipad setting?

I have looked all over the program and I can't find anything like this, can anyone help?
