Apple Maps is awful
It depends. Apple Maps is decent for navigation in Toronto but that’s a big city. I find it’s less reliable outside of large metro centres. However, it’s got better iOS integration than Google Maps not surprisingly, and I prefer the way Apple Maps announces turns and exits.

Overall, since I live in Toronto, I use Apple Maps. However, when I was traveling in Italy in smaller cities and towns, I usually used Google Maps.

Why not offer freedom of choice and capture more of the market? If deciding between their SUV and the Lucid, if that were my area of interest, I'd choose the Lucid because of CarPlay. While this could change in the future, because Rivian claims to be building a better solution, why not lure people in with CarPlay and show them why your native solution is better? Seems completely short sided for a CEO who's pretty amazing otherwise.

Same with Mary Barra at GM. No CarPlay at GM is a total fail.

Why would people switch back and forth? I would assume you set it up when you get the car and that’s it.

I haven’t had experience of CarPlay yet, my car predates it and only has Bluetooth, which is enough for most trips - I pack the phone in my bag and listen to audio to Audible or podcasts over Bluetooth.

But if I were looking for a new car today, CarPlay would be towards the tip of the list of must have features.

How does offering CarPlay or Android Auto remove the option of using the manufacturer’s software … all my cars give me (the owner) the choice of using either … the manufacturer’s software, Android Auto or CarPlay !

What’s wrong about giving the owner the choice of what software to use in the car ? This actually attracts more customers !

And that will be the downfall of the company. I can bet you that will happen in next few years.

Hahaha. They aren't going to go out of business because a few Apple sycophants (who most likely can't afford Rivians lol) claim they won't buy one because it's not available.

Love my Rivian. Tolerate my Tesla. Don't need CarPlay in either.

Those of us who have actually used these modern vehicles OSes realize that CarPlay isn't necessary.

My entire household is on the Apple ecosystem. Just bought a Rivian a week ago. I can tell you I’m perfectly happy without CarPlay. Rivian has done a great job with their UI. In addition, having Rivian Roamer is a huge plus.

I applaud him for his conviction. I'll never buy his car because of it - but at least he recognizes it.

As a very related note: in 2018 the Honda Odyssey supported CarPlay, while Toyota's Sienna didn't. It was such a HUGE swing in sales that Toyota issued the next year model (and a back-end update for existing 2018's) to ONLY do CarPlay. They had so many people come in and say - ok, these two are pretty similar, so if no carplay, i don't want it.

And that's TOYOTA. I'm glad he's confident in his product.

Rivian wants their software to be perfectly integrated with their hardware. They are no different from Apple in that regard.

Why let the phone people tell you what Car UX should be like?
True. If they manage to offer something decent.

I drive a Mercedes and their MBUX system is horrible. I switch to CarPlay to minute I step into my car. For that reason alone I will never buy a Mercedes again. Or any car that doesn’t offer CarPlay.

I agree with this take.

I think he should optionally offer normal CarPlay, but I do applaud his conviction.

I have little interest in CarPlay Ultra, but wireless CarPlay is a must.

That's part of the reason I bought a new 2025 Camry instead of a used older model Camry. The older models had only wired CarPlay. Mind you, used prices around here at the time were stupid high anyway.
Yeah, CarPlay’s more for Camry, Civic, and Accord prices… not Rivian.

Right!? And I think Dyson knocks it out of the park on their vacuum designs. I can't say much for their headphones though. They should stick to what they are good at.
The Dyson vacuum I was considering had a fatal flaw, which was that required you to hold down the power button for it to work. Like, WTF? Totally moronic design.

So I bought a Samsung which has a standard on-off button.

FWIW, I'm not sure if this means anything... Both were sold at Costco, but eventually they stopped carrying the Dyson while continuing to sell the Samsung.
