Because he's paying the provider for data on his phone, that has nothing to do with the car. You can't get one data plan from Verizon and use it on multiple devices can you? You have to pay for several data plans, one for each device
Yea... no. His music is being streamed using his data — it transfer to the car via wifi or bluetooth. So no.

Well you need an internet connection to stream the music don't you? That's what connect+ is..... In order to use Apple music on your phone when away from your house wi-fi, don't you pay a mobile provider for data? This is no different
No, wi-fi is unnecessary. Cellular service usually supports Apple Music well enough, and I imagine most of us have unlimited data these days. But because I often drive out cell service, I keep my music downloaded to my Pro and thus rarely stream music.

iPhone car key is a very convenient feature to have. Not having to have the car keys is nice, but I’m still paranoid that the feature might not work so I still always carry my keys in my pocket. I have it my 2023 BMW, which also has wireless CarPlay. BMW is an early adopter of Apple tech.

Rivian needs to stop paywalling the dash and get on board with CarPlay, like Tesla has said they will. There needs to be regulation to ban this insane tactic by automakers to hide features behind a subscription.

My wife's 2024 Hyundai Santa Fe (which we LOVE) has supported Apple CarKey since we got it. It is awesome. The only hiccup we've had is when we upgraded to iPhone 17 .... everything was smooth but for CarKey it tells me to call the call center which I have yet to do... I guess its like the early days of ApplePay.. I remember needing to call the bank to say yes, I got a new phone lol. But the functionality itself works great and is no extra $$. I drove numerous times over the past year without grabbing a key and never once had an issue. I was surprised overall how good it worked. Apple CarKey actually works better than the near field communication (or whatever they use) for their door unlocking with the actual key fob if that makes sense.

Rivian treating first-get R1 owners like Apple treated iPad 3 owners 😩
You buy an $80000 vehicle and expect it to have at least some feature updates

I get a monthly software update and have received numerous new features over the course of my ownership with gen 1. Stop posting misleading things.

Yes you can get data from one provider and use it on multiple devices. My MacBook doesn't have cell service, or my Dell laptop, or my watch, or my car, yet they all tether to my iPhone's data plan just fine.

My vehicle has the option for a paid data connection too, but I'm not going to pay it when my phone does just fine.
You can use the phone hotspot to get internet in a rivian

If he uses his phone via Bluetooth then he doesn't need to pay the $15 connect + service. I think you're a little confused or not understanding this correctly

There’s not a single car on the market without CarPlay that allows what you’re asking. You get a standard media UI and connect via usb or Bluetooth. Or if available you use CarPlay or Android Auto. If you want to use internet connected built in apps and don’t want to hot spot your phone, you need an internet connection. That’s industry wide.

You all just think CarPlay should be a requirement which is ridiculous.

It's the same for the car. Just mobile hotspot to it. Could probably even set up a shortcut to turn on mobile hotspot when your phone connects to the car via bluetooth.

I didn't know Rivian still cared about gen 1 owners, so it is interesting to hear from owners that they still somewhat. Stop posting hateful replies.

Marques Brownlee says to never buy a tech product based on the promise of future software updates--so I imagine he'd say expect not-promised updates all the less. And I believe he says this regardless of the price.

You have no idea what you're talking about. Have you even used a recently built car? There's a reason automakers are trying to force paywalls and subscriptions and "a better user experience" is not that reason.

But if he's already paying his provider for that in the form of unlimited (or limited) data, why would he need to pay the car maker on top of that? :)
Because...and stay with me here...you don't have to. Just set up a macro to automatically connect to your iPhone or android hotspot when you get in the rivian. Poof. Internet and the ability to stream Apple Music on the app in the rivian system.

Source: did this for my wife's iPhone and my android. Works every time. You can also set it to disconnect when you walk away.

Instructions on how to set this up are easily found.

Nice, love it when a stupid problem gets a clever solution! When there's a will there's a way :)

I have an internet connection on my iPhone for which I am already paying. This is just a money grab. Instead of letting me use my iPhone and its connection, I have to pay them extra for an inferior experience (no continuity by itself already makes it worse, assuming everything else was equal).

With CarPlay, I do not need to use another data plan, I just use the one on my iPhone. This adds nothing other than cost for this application.

People don’t want to use logic. I get why CarPlay is desired (though I hate it) but you’re not required to pay for anything to connect your phone. People went a decade connecting their phone via Bluetooth pre CarPlay and were fine. Now everyone acts like carmakers NEED to implement Apples software or they’re evil.
You know that people went even more decades not having cell phones at all. You do not like CarPlay, great. For almost everyone else that has used it (or for that matter Android Auto), they are superior experiences to BlueTooth streaming.
