That thing can make a big difference when buying such a lightweight laptop. It probably weighs almost a pound. The laptop probably doesn't come with it for the same reason the iPad doesn't. This laptop is meant to be mobile, not docked somewhere most of the time.

Yeah, well. Some of the places at home where I use my MBA the most are too far from the outlet to be reached with a cable the length of the iPad's. The length of the MBA's cable is enough from the couch, but from outside, which is where I use it 75% of the time, I have to use the extension cable. I want to be able to use it when and where I want, not when and where Apple decides I should.

That's what mobile means. So yeah, I'm going to spend the freaking $19 on the freaking cable (which, I agree, is monstruous). That said, at least the USB-C charge cable is 2m, that's better than the MBA's, I think.

and when you want to charge it? Say the socket isn't that close to you? the thing you're saying makes a "big difference" is actually just a cable which weighs less than the power brick. Maybe they should have left out the power brick too.

Heck, while they were at it, they could leave out the dongle. Oh, wait... ;) :p

2 meter should be okay for most people but the good thing is a few months from now you can probably get a cheaper, longer and more durable USB-C cable for less money than what Apple sells.

Monoprice has a 6 foot usb 3.1 C male to male for $24.95. Not sure if it pays to get it vs the Apple cord for $29.95

It blows me away people still stick up for this greedy cheap corporation.

Perhaps they are shareholders. That might explain this seemingly puzzling mantra that Apple can do no wrong. Apple Excusers seem to proliferate around here.

Sadly, Apple has indeed become greedy, putting excessive profit before customers.
