The time remaining is pointless because it's so inaccurate. It calculates how much battery you have left and what's going on with the computer at that snapshot.
It is not because if you look up at the time is much lower than you would expect from some workload you know that there is something in the background really sucking juice. Like an mds process running amok again or some app you should have closed.
Just the percentage and once you notice that you are really low it is already to late.
It is changing depending on workload but if they wanted it to be more accurate they'd just have to take the mean of a longer period like 5-10 mins. There would be no jumping around rapidly.
On a device that can either last 10h or 1h I think some indicator for power draw really aides the user.

Most people use activity monitor or some kind of cpu usage monitor for that purpose. the time left is just a misleading number.

Activity Monitor won't give you an estimate of how long the battery will last under the current workload. Neither will a CPU usage monitor. The time remaining is useful to many, even though it's inaccurate.
