Well for one it has an HD not an SSD and its only around 200GB so space is an issue for one. (I know, external drives, but i need everything saved on the computer) I also know about adding an SSD, but at this point i just dont think its worth it. The body of my 08 MBP is a little beat-up and i have been waiting to upgrade since word of ivy started coming out, so like 12 months. Second yes the performance is getting very sluggish.
I understand you better now. You wanted certain specs and you've been waiting, but they just happen to cost quite a lot this generation. I would've suggested staying closer to the $2k range personally. I just looked at what it would cost under the education store if you went with the upper model for the 512, bumped to 16GB of ram, added applecare, etc. and that's around the $3k mark. I would have suggested doing something like that and using a tax holiday in your state assuming there is one if this is what you feel you require. Going to 2.7 and a 768 GB hard drive is a hefty premium. The cpus aren't noticeably different. One won't grant you even an extra month of "futureproofing". They're so close that any problem that chokes one will also choke the other. 512 to 768 for $450 more is quite expensive. They just have you where they want you here unfortunately. Unfortunately Apple did everything in their power to make the lower model less desirable once specced out. I'd probably suggest a cheaper rMBP model if you're spending more than you can afford.
