Problem still exists after upgrading to Sierra.

Even my external HD (which used to work while the iPhone USB charging cable went bonkers) stopped working on the left side. The light on the HD turns on but there is no longer a connection to open up the HD.

This is a pretty silly problem to have for a 3 year old computer.

I may have to take it to Apple but what the heck are they going to do?

They'll probably replace the logic board. And it probably won't fix the issue. That was my case.

At the moment try using usb hub, preferably usb 3. I have no issue using usb hub to charge and sync the ipad.

Guys i just made a video regarding the issue, see what happen to an iphone 7 (also with iphone 5s) on a macbook pro mid 2015 15" Share the video who know Apple would watch it and fix it!

Hello everyone! Sorry for my english, I'm from Moscow, and I have the same problem, I can't find any concrete information on the russian forums how to solve this problem, but i should admit, that this problem definitely exists! maybe someone here knows what to do with this??? i have two macbooks, one pro 15 retina mid 2015 with sierra (I bought it in dec2016) and the second is macbook air 13 with el capitan, bought it few weeks ago, both of them have this malfunction on the left usb port with infinite charging off/charging on my iphone 6 and iphone 7 too.....right port of my MBPR can do the same thing occasionally:eek: i have read all messages here, and ask for help, really don't know what to do.....its a horrible:(

Do You find the way to fix this issue?
My opinion it is a software bug, now i'm trying to compare code differences in console between left and right ports under sequent connections in order to find out what exactly influences on failing to name known interface, but its so far without results...
I believe that somewhere in the world someone has already fixed this issue:)

After I got an iPad Air 2, the problem went away on it's own. Probably software indeed. Which model do you have?

I just had my MBP 2015 El Cap repaired (for a different reason) and Apple put in a new mother board and it exhibits the same problem, will take it in to Apple again to see what they say. I also have an issue where the SD card gets unmounted when the Mac power sleeps and fails to remount on wakeup, even with Mountain and Amphetamine running. It works for a while and then eventually stops. Sierra did not exhibit this behavior so I think it is a software issue.

if it is a hardware, problem can be in power controller or power supply is halfdead, power (U) sags on the bus, the guy i know(he is from authorized service) wrote me, that it is a bridge, but i don't think so...He haven't test it yet, but i think it would be the same exprerience with you, he will change logic board, and the issue will remain.

Oddly enough, If I use a non-Apple cable I have no problems with the port, which leads me to believe it is not an issue with the Mac or MacOS.

I have macbook pro 15 mid 2015... checked that if my iphone have low battery charge, this problem takes place with both ports...when its half charged - onle left port...full charge - no problem. seems like macbook can't provide enough amperage for charging(

I swapped cables and the problem went away so it's unlikely to be a MBP issue. I have not yet had the disappearing SD card issue either, yet.

What cable are you using not having this problem? The one from apple or third party? I am having this same problem with 2015 mbp 15inch and it's super annoying! Went to apple shop they replaced my board 3 months ago and now the issue came back again.

Apple cables.

Have same problem here. Suspect the MBP Retina, 15", Mid 2015 has issues.

The problem is I can't be without this machine and because some design idiot has fixed the SSD inside the machine, I can't simply swap out the SSD to another machine (which I would do with a hard disc). Grrrr...

I also have another later machine, but again, can't swap discs. Copying files over is going to be a super pain.

As they say, in Cyberspace nobody can hear you scream.

Yep.... as you can see, this thread is now 3 years old and it's still not resolved. I, too, still have the same issue with no resolution. They tried replacing my logic board, but that did not solve it. Could the logic board still be at fault? Possibly. Could it be OS related? Maybe.... but we just may never know....

I've been having same issue for a couple of years. I usually use a USB hub but when I'm not using it, it's so annoying!

Throw another one on the fire.. used to charge fine, but nowadays ipad just does this unless it's nearly full already.

Having the same problem here (right port charges iPhone 7 fine, left port cycles on/off repeatedly, freezing up phone and mac, but left port does work fine after I plug to right port for a second). For me it didn't start until recently, and I recently upgraded to iOS 11.4 and macOS High Sierra, but I really don't know if that is the issue.

I notice that if I unplug the power source (after doing the right then left fix), left port stops charging completely. Then I plug power in again, left port is back to on/off. But if I unplug left port and replug it... it works.

A lot of weirdness - I am wondering if it has to do with the order in which I plug in all my dongles/power (I use both thunderbolts + HDMI). I'll keep experimenting...
