I will get an external USD drive and put Steam and all games on it. Should be fast enough for everything right?!

Should be plenty fast via USB ~ it is how I play games when I travel. Though ~ I only play single player games, so I am not sure how well that fares online (like if it introduces loading lag).

Ok,let's get this thing straight.U bought MacBook and u are using bootcamp windows 7.How ****ed is that, man?! Ok,i would maybe understand this if u need to use win7 for something on mac ?(even if i can't remember one thing) so i noticed u instaled steam,so i'm thinking u are using mac for win 7 and playing games on windows platform which is pretty weird, but ok. I'm just saying, your mac, your shi*t ;),but c'mon.

This post is bad and you should feel bad.

Then you have little understanding of what constitutes "hardware". The Engineering of a product like the Macbook Pro Retinas not only include hardware you can not get anywhere else, which is a combination of the "specs & #s", but the cooling system, dimensions, build quality, and screen quality.

In fact, if you want any PC laptop with a comparable Macbook Pro screen quality, you're going to be paying the same money + getting the plastic leftovers.

Really? That's utter nonsense. For 2700$ u can buy 2 PC laptops and 27" monitor. In apple world u can get only 1 mediocre laptop with 512 GB SSD and "enchanced" fan which "asymmetry spreads the noise produced over multiple frequencies".Really ?! Really? They can sell this to you,or somebody else but not a little edicational guy like me. I'm not mentioning "retina" display on purpose because i find it utter crap.Don't get me wrong,i'm using mac also, but this what they are doing can be described pure and simple as "selling fog" to blind people.

We all clearly see that you are the most educational guy on this forum. Would you now please go away and troll somewhere else?

32-bit will not be able to use all 16gb of ram. Only like 3.5 I think it is.

True, but if all OP is concerned with is gaming, 32-bit should perform adequately.

Please, find me another computer that has a 2880x1800 screen. Good luck. That is a technological advancement in and of itself.

Also, find me a computer that has the build quality of a Macbook. My 13" MBP (that I'm replacing) has 4 dent marks from when I sat with a wooden chair on it. With any other laptop, it would probably have not only cracked the screen, bur probably also shattered the case. Guess what? I have small dent marks and my screen is as good as wen I first got it. My friend dropped his MBP multiple times, denting in every single corner. The internals are running as smoothly as when he first got it. A normal laptop would have died years ago for him.

What about support? Does any other company offer the incredible level of support Apple has? I don't think so. If I call HP, or Dell with a problem, I'll be transfered to L1 support in India, where I'm given the most basic troubleshooting steps and overall have a frustrating experience. Apple support? Top-class, easy to talk to, and they care.

So yeah, there's a lot of build quality and intangible benefits to buying a Macbook, even if you want to use Windows on it. The hardware and support are reasons enough, you don't even have to consider the OS.

32 bits allow to use 3 gbs of RAM (it's supposed to be 4 but hardware uses around 1 gb of ram you can't use), any new game will take around 500mb up to 2 gb of ram (I even run LoL, a not very demanding game, using 1.5gb of ram) leaving just 1 GB of ram free because you rather save 8GB of SSD space. (not to mention you have to pay the same for the 32-bits windows copy) leaving 12GB of ram unused.

To address over 4GB RAM, you need not only a 64-bit process OS but also 64-bit software.

Most games are 32-bit processes anyway, so they won't benefit from having more RAM available. If you use your windows partition purely for gaming, the game will be the only application running. Thus, even if you use a 64-bit OS, the 32-bit game will see only little to none benefit, because its memory limit of around 2GB stays. So the 12GM RAM will be unused anyway.

In time, we will see more demanding games, which will be 64-bit processes and will need more RAM. Still, more RAM usage means more hi-res textures and high-res models (other components of a competently programmed game do not have high RAM requirements). I have a strong suspicion that you will sooner run into the 650M GPU being a bottleneck with these future games than the RAM though. Most games stream data from the disk to the GPU, using RAM as an intermediate buffer, the ultra-fast SSD on the MBP will work charms in this situation.

To sum it up: it may be that you will win few percents of performance by using a 64-bit OS, but nothing substantial until the games become true 64-bit application with high RAM requirements. Til then, the additional disk space used by the 64bit windows is basically wasted. Please note that this is all under assumption that the Windows partition is used for gaming only - clearly, if you use it differently, 64-bit Windows might be a better option.

I made a 50GB partition for W7. Installed W7 and steam and now I have just 9.5GB left of 50GB. WTF!? How come? I thought W7 would just be around 7-9GB big? Where did all my space go?

Thanks for the help.

One option is to purchase Winclone 3.3 from twocanoes. It's $20 and you can use it to back up your Boot Camp partition and restore it to a larger partition.

However, with a 64-bit OS, there's a total of 8 (or 16) GB of RAM available to the system as a whole, and then a subset of that (up to 4GB) available to each process. In theory, having a 64-bit OS will make the game perform better because system processes won't have to eat up any of the game's available RAM, there's a whole other 4/12GB outside of the game's usage.

I understood your point, you didn't understand mine. with 3 GB of ram left on a 32-bit OS, you will play any game decent (if gpu isn't a bottleneck of course), but that's about it, you will have maybe 1 GB left of ram and I seriously doubt you will not open any other application while gaming (Skype, firefox, etc).

Are 3 GB or ram enough for gaming? yea sure, but if you happen yo open firefox and skype your performance might decrease. Also note that you pay the same for the 32 or the 64bit OS.

All I'm saying is that I don't think it's worth to get the 32 bit over the 62 because of 8GB of SSD space.

Excuse me because i offended your majesty MacBook Pro Retina Display? Do you think he's offended ? If he is i apologize in my name and in the name of every plastic laptop in the whole world.God forbid to say something against holy name of Apple church. Yes,retina display is the ninth wonder of the world. Do you think it's alien tehnology or maybe more advanced apple tehnology? Yes,please feed me,i'm hungry troll

I have yet to receive my rMBP but plan to use a 128gb SDXC card in order to expand the storage for W7/W8.
It's less heavy than a HDD, yet fast and large enough to store videos and install games.

Maybe you should look out for this option.

I shall use a 128 lexar x133 class 10 for this. Not the fastest but I got it for 80$

Its weird because u can buy windows 7 laptop under 700$ which run games flawlesly,or to rather say,2-3 times better than any mac. i7,8 GB Ram,GT660 with 2 GB Ram and SSD are pretty common thing on any PC laptop and u don't need to use any parallel virtualization or emulation under OS.

I hate to continue with this thread hijacking, but I'd love it if you posted a link to this notebook. I have 700 bucks burning a hole in my pocket and would love a i7 8GB ram, 2GB ram GPU, SSD Windows notebook. I'm not trolling, I'm serious. Post the link, I want it!

To the OP, to try and redeem myself for this hijack, here is a link describing a way to slim down your installation: http://www.zdnet.com/blog/bott/windows-7-and-ssds-cutting-your-system-drive-down-to-size/2941?pg=2

Troll likes to troll...

Why would I be trolling? Seriously the only thing the rMBP has going for it is the retina display. You can't change the SSD or upgrade the ram. Most people can just save $800-1000 and actually get a macbook with an optical drive, and upgrade their hard drive to an ssd and ram without apple tax. You can even have a hard drive AND ssd in a standard MBP. I thought macbooks were more about functionality than looking pretty... Don't even start with external crap because who really wants to carry around a laptop with externals

I am doing a similar thing, but I just moved the entire steam installation over to an external usb3 ssd, and I run the games off of that. It feels just as fast and it saves space on the internal drive.

I've asked this somewhere else, but do you think an external USB 3.0 5400rpm or 7200rpm drive would achieve the same result, despite the obviously longer loading times?

Why should I pay additional $700 for an ugly plastic brick when I can also play games at similar settings using my work RMBP with its much better screen? Really, some of you people just have too much money... now, I would understand your confusion if the RMBP was used for gaming only, which it clearly is not. And bootcamp is not virtualization, Windows is natively supported on Apple computers since a long time now.

And btw, good luck finding a windows laptop with same level of performance as the RMBP for $700. Over $1000 is more likely.

P.S. Why am I even answering you? :/

Because you want to use your cool rMBP ;)
