Are you using Safari? Mine seems to scroll about as smoothly as my work iMac...

No, I'm using Chrome, but I've given safari a try and it is a little faster and smoother for pages with text (e.g. google web search results pages). As soon as you hit a page with image content, however, it's straight back to lag-territory. Try scrolling theverge.com homepage, for example.

Okay I see what you mean with the verge. If you're willing to take the battery hit, it might be worth forcing the discrete GPU to run. I just tried that and now it scrolls a lot more smoothly

Which I guess proves it's a GPU issue - not a CPU issue. I wonder if driver improvements will help

the lag is up to google to fix chrome. safari doesnt lag at all.

Yes it does! Even OSX window animations lag and jitter when maximising and restoring windows, yet I don't have the same problem with my desktop linux machine. Safari is certainly smoother in ML than it was in Lion, but it's not lag-free.

Your definition, and my definition of lag must be completely different..

It's pretty simple, either it's smooth and - as a human being - you can't detect visual lag and jitter, or it's not and you see jumps/frames in animations. /shrugs

in all seriousness you should return your rMBP (assuming its possible) because both ML and retina are still very new and won't be perfect for at least a few months. If I were you I'd stick with your old cMBP and SL if you want the smooth experience vs new features and potential issues that come with it.

Have you tried the discrete gpu?

Yep, and that seems to improve things a little (still not perfect on pages with quite a few images), but I guess I don't want to have to run the discrete gpu constantly. I guess I'm just going to have to get over it, or make a decision before it's too late.

Well... personally I never found OSX to be perfect even on non-retina macs, so a few jitters here and there don't bother me. If they completely ruin the experience for you, I would probably return. But for me, the increased sharpness makes any other negatives worth it.

I do think driver improvements will help. The HD4000 is a relatively new iGPU - it'll take some time to optimize the drivers.

absolutely no change for me, rather I am getting massive stutter switching spaces at 1680 * 1050 resolution, when i select best for retina it gets slightly better but its still there. I have tried canary, chrome dev and there is definitely a lag in scrolling, The only thing which seems to be better in ML is that safari is fast.
I am seriously thinking about returning my rMBP but the problem is I am not sure which machine should I go for as its replacement, MBA 13 with i7 and ssd or normal MBP .
Is anybody else in the same boat??

You could swap for a classic MBP and swap out the memory and HD yourself. You don't void warranty - in fact, the MBPs are shipped with instructions on how to replace the HD and RAM.
