Don't know if mine does it or not, don't care either way.

It works, so why try and make it cause a problem?

Ive got 12 months to take it back so I so desire ;)

Um, how do you have 12 months to return it?

"I just intentionally tried to get my device to have image retention issues and it did. I'm taking it back."

Next, we should all drop our units to see if the screen shatters. If it does, let's let the internet know about the flaw and return them.

Sad part is there was a thread similar for this for the air a while ago?

He doesn't. Image retention isn't covered by the warranty. In the UK we get 12 months cover for manufacturing defects, but Apple deny this is a problem.

Was there?

Where and when did Apple deny this?

From personal experience. They set up a support page for it. Image persistence suffering screens are 'in-spec' according to apple an they said as it is 'normal' they won't replace it.

http://support.apple.com/kb/HT5455?viewlocale=en_US&locale=en_US

This doesn't mean apple won't replace a product, but it means they don't have to and can refuse you, which is what happened to me in store and on the phone.

There a 3 types of screens used in the iPads: these are the first 4 letters of the serial number.

Dmpl is the LG screen. I have it on my air. It's very pleasant in color and coolish tint. The problem with LG screens is they can have uneven tint. Mine is pinkish toward the bottom

Dmql is samsung. These tend to have even tint but warmer in color.

Dlxl are sharp screens. They tend to have the image retention issues on the mini. Not sure about the air. My mini is sharp and has this issue.

I saw this on a website last night and a trying to locate it again. I don't guarantee this info is 100 percent correct. Also if you google dmpl dmql samsung sharp you will see this is pretty much the general consensus.

32GB wifi. Just ran test. No issue. Bunch of trolls / Air-fanboys inventing defects. Can't believe I even attempted this test. 10 minutes of my life I wish I could get back.

Great info, thanks! Really sorry that you have the problem though. :(

Where'd you find this info, and can it be seen on the box?

You're just lucky, the issue is very real, I've had it on other displays before.

Very good question actually.

Yes, leaving my TV on for 12 hours or my computer monitor for 24 hours can lead to burn-in. Thats why screen savers were invented for this devices. The usage of an iPad is likely different but yes, you can try very hard to break / damage a display with enough effort. But to what point?

Screen savers were invented for burn-in, back when we used CRT and Plasmas. Image persistence/retention is a different kettle of fish.
I can't speak for others, but I want to stress the device when testing it because I know from personal experience that image retention gets worse with time. After a few months I'd read through one page of iBooks, and by the time I've read it, and switched to a different app, I'd still have the text from the book displaying for the next few minutes. Not what I want from a £500 ($800) tablet. :(

I tried the test on my 16gb r-mini which is dlxl (sharp?) and it does not suffer from retention.

Maybe it's only some sharp displays then.

I tested mine and there is IR even around 2 minutes. I don't notice anything with regular use. It's most likely going back. Don't know if I'll buy another. Maybe a few months down the road. Until then I'm fine with the Ipad Air.

Which screen does it have?

Interesting.

The verizon retina mini that has image retention is a DLXL.

The wifi-only that does not have retention is a "DQTL".

We could do with a poll that displays image retention and which manufacturer of display. I'd wager that the majority of them are sharp...

No retention shows after 2 continuous tests, about 20 mins. Glad I got a good panel.
Wifi only model. Serial begins with DQVL

Has anyone with WiFi + Cellular models had this problem?

I ran the marco.org test on mine and noticed very faint image retention. I have the 32GB T-Mobile version. For the record, I'm not taking it back. It has a Sharp screen.

I also noticed it on an iPad Air, but that was only after turning the brightness all the way up. That one had an LG screen.

This DQ** looks like something to look out for then...

So I guess the Cellular model also has problems. Glad yours is only slight.

Good to know. I have the LG on my Air (I noticed a very faint image retention running the marco.org test, but detectable only if the brightness was all the way up). I have a Sharp display on the mini and the image retention was slightly noticeable.

That said, I'm likely going to keep the mini and return the Air. I had a previous mini and while the color gamut on the Air is nice, the larger size is a little more difficult to get used to.

Hmm what do you know my rMini passed and so did my air.

What's the ipad mini version and when did you order it? Was it pickup or china posted?

----------

Just tested it on my 32 GB retina Mini I picked up yesterday. No burn in at all.

My first 4 digits of serial # are DLXL

Well mine has the same but still burns. I think all iPads start with the same serial anyway, what matters are the last four. Would u mind sharing what version did u get

----------

And for those who say, why would you torture your screen to see if it fails. We'll think about the usage pattern. Say that you love using your mini as a desk clock while it's charging. Well, you can't use it that way anymore. Because if you do, you'll have retention problem very soon.

with normal usage my cellphone burnt in after 13 months when the warranty was over. YouTube burnt in on my screen and it was disaster. Then everything started burning in and at the end it was a mess on my screen, can't see what's there anymore.

This is just not acceptable. I know how much we'd like to love our devices but faulty is faulty. No matter how we want to think them of as very good, some are not. I hope I will find a version which doesn't have this problem like some of people here.

The first 4 digits do make a difference, I've asked a few friends with Airs and they are different. It's suppose to indicate the factory they were made. Different factories fit different screens. Edit - only found this out by googling after richard mentioned it.
