IMO if a store offers a good return policy (Best Buy- 30 days no hassles), that's their own fault for losing out on whatever they'll make on the open box price. It's designed to bring more customers to buy things more freely, and it probably works well, but if you just go by the rules that's their loss. For example, I bought the base model at Best Buy like the 3rd day it came out. After a lot of debating, I decided I wanted 16GB of RAM. I put my order in, which didn't deliver until yesterday, but I returned the other RMBP on day 30 just because I could. I don't see anything wrong with it if they're offering an easy to-take-advantage-of- system.

Well, you have a difference of intent. In my scenario, you have someone who KNOWS they need 16GB ORDER a 16GB computer, then just get 8GB MBPR for a few weeks because "you need a computer".

In your scenario, you have someone who DOESN'T KNOW what they need, and buy the 8GB MBPR INTENDING to keep it if it works for them. Then, AFTER judging whether or not 8GB will work for them, they MAY order the 16GB.

Look, I'm not going to judge you by my morals, but I'm just putting out there the way that some people see it.

I don't know... if Apple were some small company with very small profit margins, I'd probably feel bad. But fact of the matter is, Apple's prices are designed with this possibility in mind. And they do resell the returned laptops as refurb at a discount that is comparable to the EDU price.

That said, I didn't do it since I have a couple perfectly functional computers at the moment.

I couldnt wait for my order so i bought a base model. i installed ML gm and it was significantly faster. MY order arrived this morning :) for the 2.6/16/512 model... and i installed ML right away...the 16 gb is definitely working ..i dont see lag like i do on the base... i asked my wife to verify and she could see the base have a slight hesitation while scrolling. i am very happy with my purchase so far.. i decided to give my wife the base model. this laptop is worth the wait..

Unless the two rMBPs are the same except for memory, your observation useless.

I had two rMBPs that were identical except for the memory and I do feel the added memory does make the laptop faster/peppier/snappier

Really? Could you record a video of it? I'm going to buy a rMBP in store on Friday, meaning I can't get 16GB of ram, but I'd consider ordering online if it meant it ran better, though it seems really unlikely to me...

At the apple store, they had several rMBPs on display and almost nobody was trying them out so I went around and gave them all a try.

I found two of the six computers to be noticeably faster than the other four, they were all running on best for retina mode.

This is the equivalent of blind testing, I didn't know each computer's specs.

When I finally did see the specs I noticed that the "faster" ones (multitude of things like mission control, launchpad scrolling, safari scrolling, esp. scrolling with youtube video playing) had a 2.6GHz processor.

Unfortunately, none of them had 16GB ram so I couldn't see about that, but the 2.6 makes a noticeable difference in some UI things.

No man if you have a use for them it`s all good, it`s the ones who are abusing the system that irritate; getting them for no reason other than to return etc

I agree. I've seen so many people do that before.

When the iPhone 4 came out, there were a couple of people who bought black iPhone 4's and continued to return them every 14 days for a new one, just to hold them over until the white iPhone 4 came out. One guy said he bought and returned 3 phones! Just so he could have one to hold him over until a white one came out! Seriously?

Apple is kind enough not to charge restocking fees, why do people abuse it so much?

Note: Not insinuating the OP did anything wrong. Just commenting on others.

I experienced rmbp at apple store. but moving touchpad point seemed little lagging. then I tested what frame rate will be. it was average 21fps which is not acceptable. so if it is added more memory like 16GB, it will be improve without doubt. but it's still wasted money anyway. normally 8GB memory is plenty for any PC or mac. ratina display seems overkill. honestly, I didn't see any difference on my eyes even though color & contrast were little smooth.

I'm sorry what? Your entire post didn't make sense....

Interesting. I wish someone would test this on camera and post the video on YouTube - same memory config but different CPUs.

That's nuts! Yeah, I've heard the same about the RAM. OSX uses a lot and its really worth getting 16gb.

Keyword being 8GB 'free', how much inactive is there? Yes OSX will keep using RAM, so why not go for 32, 64? You need to draw a line somewhere, and for a lot of people it really isn't worth getting 16GB...

But anyway, I doubt its zippier in the OP's case.
