I've used TPU cases on my 3GS, 4, 4S, and now 5, and none of them have damaged a thing, and I've used a wide range of them, from the Incipio NGP to cheapie 99-cent ones from eBay. I guess I could see how if something were to get between the case and your phone when putting the case on, like an abrasive piece of dust or sand or something, then sure, that could lead to damage, but I'm careful and have never suffered any ill effects.

You might be confusing the hard shell with the soft shell as far as damage to the phone. I originally bought the hard shell version on accident and I didn't like it. The soft shell version is much better.

Pic's of the soft shell clear TPU Rocketfish case on my black/matte 5.

I'm probably going to attempt to return this. I've had the black one for a week since last Wednesday night and this thing is so scratched now (on the outside of the case, not the phone itself). I know it will eventually but it shouldn't be like this in the first week. Plus at the sides where my hand is placed when holding the phone, there is visible discoloration from the natural oils on my hand. Again, totally understand that this will happen over time, but IMHO it shouldn't within a week.

Just got the black one. Anybody have issues with thier power button? Mine is incredibly difficult to push. Might exchange it for another to see if I have the same probem.

I picked up the clear one today to hold me over until my Grove bamboo case comes in. I really like this case! Especially for the price. It looks great on my 5.
