I have a Roku 3 and I have noticed the batteries degrade faster than I feel they should. Might be a bug that is draining the battery over time for some reason.

I just got some rechargeables and swap them as needed, really not a big deal for us. Rechargeable batteries have come down in price a lot with Amazon Basics starting to sell them.

I did exactly this, after changing the batteries multiple times in a month just got a set of rechargeable batteries for it. Still an annoyance though after sitting back and the remote does not work.

I don’t see any future for the AppleTV when using a modern smart tv. I’d rather have a Smart tv with support for HomeKit and airplay 2 than another separate box called AppleTV. The development of AppleTV compared too Smart TVs is imo very slow.

This is a point that no one is talking about. Basically how slow apple is at updating their products and services, which is counter intuitive to a industry which is rapidly growing.

So you plan on buying a new tv every year or so? Or else you won't be experience the rapidly growing industry. I usually keep mine for about 10... and will happily upgrade my apple tv every couple years. What does a smart tv do that an apple tv doesn't? TVs are catching up to streaming boxes. They aren't surpassing them imo. It will be interesting to see how support for older smart TVs is over the years... in the past it has been non existent. Maybe it will be better for tvs that use OS like android or roku, though my sony android tv is super laggy and not fun to use. I believe it really boils down to what kind of user you are. If you're a cord cutter and your main interface is your streaming device, you might prefer the apple tv or something like it. If you're just a casual streamer and still have cable or don't watch much tv, smart TVs are more than sufficient.

My AppleTV 4K is speedy, runs everything I want it to, delivers kick ass screensavers which add a visual element I love to my living room, has a fantastic TV app which centralizes all my services+iTunes video content minus Netflix, allows AirPlay, the use of my AirPods when I need quiet viewing time...and despite being a few years old does it all well. What, pray tell, do new vendors offer except more monitoring of my viewing habits?

Hope it drives the cost down of the overpriced AppleTV. I love it but cannot justify the price difference over the Roku.
Thanks for letting us know that you prefer companies like Roku, FB and Google who monetize user data to profit at your expense. Thanks for keeping them afloat.
You are doing a great service for the rest of us by being an example of what not to do when it comes to privacy.

Regarding the Roku 3, I wouldn't be surprised if this aging but popular model is cut from the list of AirPlay device support...

Apple literally sells the Apple TV at cost.
Apple TV is overpriced. And, allowing AirPlay 2 on Roku is an admission that Apple TV will never get enough market penetration for Apple to launch a viable TV Service.

Different strokes for different folks, I've had ATV since ATV2? and love it. We have one on each of our 3 TV's, we dont have cable or staellite, just an antenna in the attic that we can pick up local channels on.
Whats the complaint with the remote?
What functionality am I missing out on?

Remote: Too fragile... breaks ultra easy. Horrid interface, even if you turn down the sensitivity. Looks nice though, just horrible to navigate

Roku remote: ugly but tactile feel is much better. I love the headphone jack on the remote.

Apple TV: I only used it because of the App Beamer. If you don't know what beamer is, you probably didn't use the Apple TV3 to it's full potential. Name me one thing that Roku doesn't do that Apple TV does other than Airplay and higher price.

Apple TV had great potential and they didn't nothing with it for years.

Apple TV doesn't sell user data to advertisers like Roku does, that alone kicks Roku out of my house.

Ever wonder why Roku sells hardware cheap, that's because it can monetize user data, welcome to the world of freemium, where you are the product.

If you re-read their post, you might realize that they were talking about Airplay being buggy, not AppleTV.

But I do find AppleTV 4K (and previous gen to lesser extent) to be extremely buggy, at least the apps are. If I try to resume watching anything in the TV app, it fails and only seems to work if I go straight to that program. HBO constantly requires a login but if I ignore it, I can proceed anyway, Netflix and Hulu require semi-daily force quits in order to launch or function correctly. Prime Video works OK but its web interface is clunky and should be rewritten. These issues might not be Apple's fault but they are Apple's problem because they are part of the app store that Apple has approved.

I have had an AppleTV 4K and never have any of the problems you are talking about. Netflix works every time and has never needed a force quit. I love the Atmos and HDR. I like it how all my Movies Anywhere movies show up under the TV app and I can play it in 4K. The interface is fast and fluid. I just wish that they would let me play MKVs with Atmos instead of only the streaming services.

Hey folks,

I use a Roku streamer that I stream to from my Mac using Plex. It seems to work well.

Would any if you mind explaining how Airplay will be better than that? I honestly don’t know other than maybe I could stream music through my TV and, guessing here, mirror my Mac screen...?

Thanks very much!

First, Apple killed their wireless networking business (and ceded it to competition). Next, they allowed Apple Music on Amazon Alexa devices (a tacit admission that HomePod is a failure). Now, Apple is going to allow AirPlay 2 on Roku devices (because Apple TV boxes can't compete on price and have lower adoption rates).

Some hail this as a new Apple glasnost. I see it as Apple being so desperate to get into media services that they are selling out their core customers.

Well, there are serious issues with some Smart TVs, like injecting ads. Everyone wants more ads, right? I've never once setup a Smart TV and actually allowed it any kind of internet access whatsoever. I would much rather have a dumb TV and add the streaming device of my choice (Many of these are in school settings, but even at home I never hook smart TVs to the internet and the last time around managed to find an actual dumb TV to purchase).

I'd be thrilled if my Roku3 could support AirPlay via an OS update. That would solve a bunch of problems for me and the awesome price of $0.00. :)
Me too. We have an old appleTV, but only use it for airplay. I much prefer Roku. Our latest tv is a tcl Roku tv. Very slick. Looking forward to putting my appleTV in a drawer.

Why are people using the remote for either Apple TV or Roku? IPhone remote apps for the win.
[doublepost=1552405733][/doublepost]I have an ATV 4K downstairs on an old TV, which works great. I have a new, inexpensive TCL tv with built-in Roku upstairs. I’ve also been very pleased with how well that works. The only thing I missed from ATV is my iTunes content, so I have an HDMI cable I used to attach my iPad on occasion. I’m looking forward to Airplay 2!

Like I said, Apple makes no money on Apple TV, so by definition it's not overpriced.

Imo a remote is still a convenient thing to have in your TV area; for a person like me who wears an apple watch and doesn't keep my phone with me around the home.

Too fragile? Breaks ultra easy? What? I've never had an ATV remote break, except for the one that got wrapped up in the bed sheets and washed. That was my fault, not Apple's, it was also the old style remote. Interface works flawlessly, like working an iPhone, perhaps you gave up on it too early? We have cases on ours, maybe that helps somehow? Even my mid-60's mother in law works hers without any trouble.

I don't know anything about Roku, I've only used Apple TV, that's why I'm asking what I'm missing. I really think they all probably work the same, its just to the point of liking option A or option B. In this case it seems like option A (apple) is more expensive for the equipment.

All I could find on google was that App Beamer was a way to play videos on your ATV from your computer, which I can do with the "computers" app on apple TV, streams videos from any of our Mac's. We have a Mac Mini working as a pseudo-server with video streaming content.

Once you can use AP2 with Roku, it sounds like they'll be about the same. I wonder what will come from the upcoming March event. I'm actually hoping for a lower-cost ATV5, dongle-style, because I don't disagree that the equipment is very expensive.

Like I said, Apple makes no money on Apple TV, so by definition it's not overpriced.

From one pedant to another: I'm afraid you're wrong. Overpriced is subjective. If the prospective purchaser thinks its not worth what Apple are charging, then it's overpriced. Whether Apple sells it at cost or not is irrelevant.

Overpriced definitions and example sentences from various reference sites:
"too expensive"
"I think these coats are overpriced."
"If you say that something is overpriced, you mean that you think it costs much more than it should."
"charging or charged at too high a price".

Yes, where is the Airplay 2 support for my 3 ROKU TVs (TCL and Sharp ROKU TVs)?
