One MAJOR warning: Apple has completely changed the way you do media file management in iTunes 11.0 on your iPod. Good thing I have an old iPod nano (3G 8 GB) to "practice" on learning how to use it.

How so? what are the changes?

Omg

I'm gonna lose my mind! They took away the item count at the bottom of each list/playlist. Like total apps, total songs, total videos, etc. I RELIED HEAVILY on that :(

- EDIT
Ok, nvm, I didn't even look thoroughly to see that they added it at the top of each playlist, but I still can't see my count on Apps and Music (not playlists).

Cover Flow was an option, some people use it, some not.
An option Apple should left.
Buy the way the new redesign App Store use a Cover Flow banner on the top!!!

As seen earlier in this thread:

File -> Show Status Bar (or command-/)

For the most part, they made things better. iTunes remains great for music and now app management seems to have been cleaned up too.
What has changed for apps? I cannot see anything that is different.

But I am befuddled by Apple's complete inability to make video browsing even halfway as nice as music browsing.

1) In the 'Movies' tab in the iPhone view there is still no way to view this in any way other than 'large icons in alphabetical order.' Credit, I guess, to them for making the icons smaller, but that doesn't change the fact that this lack of options is really un-friendly.

2) In the iPhone's 'TV Shows' if you have to scroll down to find a show then you have to scroll way back UP to find the episodes. Scrolling down the shows doesn't move the window...it's moves the page. This kind of thing really makes me think they didn't ever try iTunes with more than a few files imported. Really?

3) Stuff is HUGE FOR NO REASON. I have a 24" monitor. When I open a show with 13 episodes I can't see them all on my screen. I have to scroll down! In what world is a 24" screen not large enough to show 13 items on a list?
I think there are two issues:
- Synching of video to iOS devices, here nothing has changed and it gets cumbersome if you have more than two dozen movies (a lot of scrolling).
- Browsing of movies inside iTunes, here I would say, the answer is that all that visual stuff is nice for beginners with a small library but that everybody else eventually switches to list view anyway (or relies fully on search)

Generally, most people will have probably two orders of magnitude more songs than movies (I do pretty much exactly have a ratio of 100). Thus, addressing the music browsing is the more urgent task. Moreover, this release only changed things within iTunes, it changed basically zero in regard to synching. It is probably a good idea to do these things in separate steps.

How do you guys play multiple albums at the same time without using Up Next, and how do you get those albums to shuffle their songs.

Used to be able to do this on the old iTunes but I can't figure out how to do it here :(

I need to see the album artwork in the lower left corner.
Me too, but Apple is radical: You want album art? Stick to Artist, Album, Gneres tab.

Personally, I find these three modes pretty useless. Unless we talk about only a handfull of items, I find stuff much faster in a list (usually combined with searching to make that list nice and short). But I guess if you only own 30 albums than a grid is fine but with over 700 artists and close to a 1000 albums that is pretty pointless for me.

In a compact list, I can scroll to an artist alphabetically, in the Artists tab there is way too much spacing for scrolling to be efficient. And on a 13" monitor, I can never see more than three albums in the Artist tab which is useless for some of my artists.

By far the best iTunes update in its history. Love the new mini player, search and minimalistic design. If you guys didn't already know there is a 2nd mini player. Click the cover picture in the playhead and it pops up a miniplayer of the cover art that you can resize and reposition anywhere on the screen.

lol @ people demanding cover flow.

get over it already. most overrated feature yet. i hope safari does away with it too in favor of a solution similar to iTunes 11.

useless feature that does very little to find what you want as images flash from left to right and right to left time and again as you keep hoping they will stop precisely at the album you need similar to a roulette.

I could say the same about you. You don't like Coverflow? What are you smoking?

I actually like the scroll through the album designs to pick music. Didn't do it all the time, but it was a great feature.

Glad I read this thread first before I downloaded. Would not be happy.

i liked coverflow to look at, but i found the old school list more functional and it had none of the bugs.

so far so good-is much much smoother. My biggest complaint is how you have to manage devices. I don't do auto syncing of all media and all apps across my ipad and iPhone. It is a bit more of a chore to access my devices now.

Other than that minor qualm, I am happy and if the delay made this happen-go on them for holding back.

Except we won't because the list view now is just a huge table of text, with no album artwork to separate the albums or otherwise designate groups of songs.
Any list with album art is way to widely spaced for me, way too much scrolling for me. Album art simply does scale well (Coverflow on an iOS device is useless for me, scrolling through 1000 covers is just not efficient).

The expanded view is wonderful in theory. But you can't change the columns, so you can't see the iTunes Match status of the songs and you can't get the checkbox column so no way to uncheck that annoying video that you don't want added to Up Next when you add the album.

No sorting in the iTunes store, so the > 80% of the time when you know what album you want, you can't find it becuase things are sorted by the useless popularity with no way to change to sort by name or release date.

I guess you forgot how to use the search bar at the top right.. Because when I type in a album it bring up the album I looking for in the iTune Store...

Why limit Column Browser to Music -> Songs ONLY?

I have a lot of songs .. and I created various Playlists for my iPhone and iPad ... each of these playlists contains many many songs ... I also organize songs using Genres ...

Since the Column Browser is now ONLY available in Music when "Songs" is selected ... So now in my playlist I'm forced to scroll through the entire list of songs in Playlist to find a particular song (pain in the butt if you don't remember the name of the artist especially in non-alphabetic languages, like Chinese) .. and there is no way beside searching to see all songs and album from a particular artist.

This is the same design they use in the iPad and it's extremely bad for people with many songs!!!! I've submitted a bug report to them for the iPad a long long time ago and hear nothing ... and now they mess with the Desktop iTunes too ... WTH!!!!!!!!!!!

I had to register just to say that this update sucks balls!!!

umbillical summed it up pretty well already...

- Where is the Album Artwork on the left in Songs View or when in Playlist & List View?

- Where is the Album Artwork in the bottom left corner?

- Where is "group by artist" in the Albums and Genres Views?

- Why is the Column Browser not generally available?

Navigating through my more than 1,000 albums has just become a pain in the arse and I don't understand how Apple can push out such a half-baked product!

Finally, and this has been a longstanding issue with iTunes: When Album Artwork is not available in the iTunes database there is no way that I can add Artwork manually to WAV tracks. Why? If the database can do it, why can't I as a user add Artwork manually too???

When you don't know what you want to listen to, you can flip through it. The album artwork is nice, in general. And it will prompt you with some stuff you might not have thought of.

It seemed like a nice enough thing to use for browsing your collection.

Exactly.

And, hey, dum-dums that can't understand why someone would like a certain UI feature and you don't, quit belittling those that liked it. If you didn't like Coverflow, why do you care if someone else did? Talk about some whiners.

And I found another bug:

The Column Browser is available for old Playlists in List View where I had the Column Browser activated before the update. However, the Column Browser cannot be switched on and off anymore after the update.

For new Playlists created after the update and for old Playlists with the Column Browser deactivated before the update, the Column Browser cannot be switched on at all anymore after the update.

Eddy Cue should be fired next!
