Charging an iPad with an iPhone charger would take forever. The iPad charger specifically uses a lot more wattage. If you set up a Genius appointment, they will only recommend you read the instructions before operating the iPad.

Wrong, I charge my iPad using my iPhone charger all of the time. It takes longer but since I have both the iPhone and iPad charger next to my bed, I often confuse the two for very obvious reasons.

OP, Try just using the supplied charger and see what happens. You may need to calibrate your battery too.

The iPad 3 has a higher power draw at idle compared to the iPad 2. The iPhone charger can't keep up. You need to use the 10W charger that came with it.

To be clear, it has nothing to do with the size of the battery in the iPad 3. The iPhone charger probably is working, and it's helping the iPad 3 not drain quite as quickly, but it's still not enough to get it to the point where its charging.

I am having the same problem but it could be my own fault, I will have to wait and see if the charge gets up.

First off I didn't remove the new charger from the box because it looked the same as the one I was using on my iPad 1 & 2. I have just checked the new charger with the one I have been using the volts and amps are diferent. On the iPad 1 charger it is 5v, 1 amp. The new charger and the one that came with iPad 2 are both 5.1v, 2.1amps.
I am hoping my new iPad 3 starts to charge correctly with it's own charger, if not then I too have a Lemon. I will post back if it starts to charge.

Forgot to mention I am in the UK.

I did. It's not a battery capacity issue, or that the iPhone charger doesn't work to charge an iPad. It's a power draw issue, which no one had mentioned. If the iPad 3, with a 70% larger battery, drains in the same 10 hours of usage, it's clearly drawing more power. Since the iPhone charger was already pretty slow at charging an iPad 2, the iPad 3 must have crossed a draw threshold that makes it impossible to charge it with an iPhone charger.

That said, I don't understand people that charge their iPads with the iPhone charger anyway. I go the other way, and use my iPad charger to charge my iPhone, since it charges the iPhone so fast.

Edit: And of course, NOW I see my problem. The OP said that it was his iPad charger wasn't working.

Not much of an electrical or math fan, so a quick question to the opposite.

Will the iPad 3 charger work on the iPhone (4) effectively? As in, not blow it up?

No you're still correct. OP said he was using his iPhone charger. And your explanation is spot-on.

The iPad 3 charger is no different than the iPad 2 charger, and I use that all the time to charge my 4S. Charges up lickety-split. And it's officially supported by Apple.

Ugh. original post forgotten amongst all the chaff.

OP, are you sure that it is the ipad itself and not the charger?

Got mine from Walmart last night. It came 96% charged, so I didn't bother plugging it in until I went to bed. Woke up this morning to find it still at 82%...wasn't recognizing the charger. Charger worked fine on my phone. The iPad DID work with my iphone charger after multiple attempts, and after multiple attempts, it IS charging from my one at work.

Obviously I don't want to keep dealing with this. Solution? Genius appointment? Just try to exchange at Apple store? Obviously stock is a concern if I try to exchange at Walmart.

How the hell is that a Lemon????

Ummm??

I think you were just tired bro...

Yep. I've tested with TWO ipad chargers and ONE iphone charger.

Fellas, it's NOT the charger, and it's NOT about using an iphone charger! I do appreciate the considerate and smart people who have replied. As for the rest of you, continue your bickering.

Update. I switched of the iPad for 30 minutes, switched it on and the charge had increased 3%, charging while off works fine. I am now using it while still plugged in but the charge is dropping by 1% about every 10 minutes.:(

-- ipad does NOT charge with iPad charger
-- iPHONE DOES charge with iPad charger
-- iPad DOES charge with iPhone charger (slowly...after several attempts)

And that is where the confusion started. The OP did NOT state that he was using the iPad charger in the original post. The first mention of exactly which charger was being used (in that post) was in reference to the attempt to use the iPhone charger. Understandable confusion.

To the OP - hope you get it all sorted out.

All sorted I have found out what the problem was, apart from using the iPad 1 charger I was also using a 2 metre extension USB cable. It's obvious now I must have been losing power through the extension cable. Try all options before deciding you have a Lemon, I have and found out why it wasn't charging.

Curious. I've been letting iCloud restore all of my apps on my iPad, and it's plugged into the charger that came with it. I just noticed that my battery has gone down 2% since I started.

I, too, am using a third-party longer cable so it can reach the power strip under my desk. I shouldn't be losing that much power through the cable, but I suppose it's possible. I'll try the included USB cable. I just assumed that it was sucking down so much bandwidth over WiFi that was draining it quickly.
