Maybe I'm the only one that feels this way, but I liked it better when MR kept to the 3rd person and approached things from a more professional reporting standpoint.

Completely agree. Just saw another blog posting on here by him that did that same thing. Not very professional as you say.

I'm with you. It's been very noticeable in every post that Jordan has done.

Resume playback finally implemented? Such essential feature was available in SoundJam MP back in 2001, from where iTunes was developed.

This sounds very exciting, if true. I'll hope for an icon redesign, though I doubt that will happen. Apple is fond of blue circles lately.

I made this icon myself right after iCloud was announced. Hopefully with iTunes 11 it will make sense.

iTunes does need an overhaul, the first thing Apple needs to do to is get rid of Ping. It is so bad I have hide the icon and disable it in parental controls.

I could not agree more, iTunes for managing/buying apps is so inelegant. Music and movies (and books) are a completely different buying experience than Apps and I really wish Apple would recognize this. The iCloud app should handle syncing music, apps, etc. the way iTunes handles syncing of photos now, i.e. it doesn't all have to reside in the same app.

iTunes is already something of a bloated mess. They really need a central iCloud app that handles all syncing, including iOS devices. Then pare down iTunes and let it focus on what made it great in the first place: organizing music. I'd also break out video playback into a separate app. It already is on iPads, which makes it even more confusing for people, having different places to find the same stuff on different devices....and don't forget iPhoto (for some odd reason) imports videos too. It's a mess. Every type of media or data should have its own app, and its own store (all linked to your Apple ID, of course).

iCloud - oversees syncing everything, managing devices, lets you select in one interface what media you want to sync, and to where.
  • App Store - apps, and maybe include managing home screen icons here.
  • iTunes - music, and only music (OK, audio, including podcasts), includes iTunes Store for audio content.
  • Video - videos (for playback), includes video store for video content.
  • iPhoto - photos
  • iBook - books, includes iBooks Store
  • Others - handle their own data: iCal, Address Book

How about fixing the basic coding

I would be happy with an iTunes that works smoothly, I get tried of the clanky way it works on my PC. I have 498 gigs of music listed. It is a pain in the butt to manage the files. Winamp has all 3 Terabytes of my music files it has indexed them in several differents ways, it did all of this automatically, it didn't totally destroy my file structure in doing it and works smoothly. I guess when you have captive users, it is Apples way or the Highway.

Typical Apple.

Why can't they just leave interfaces the same. It's what we are use to! First Lion gives me an option called "Keep Both Files" when copying something, now this? Stop with these subtle changes we could care less about. Just add stuff, nothing else.

Why can't Apple just put all of it's "stores" in a seperate app. It's ridiculous for me to use the "Mac App Store", then go to iTunes for all the other stores. Just make a Store App that let's me look at everything in one app. The downloads can then go to their respective apps. iCloud should be the dedicated syncing app when I want to manage my iDevices. And seriously, iChat AND Facetime app? Come on. Think it through and use what you already have to add functionality. Frankly the iCloud should be a seperate app for me to view what I have and can pull down from the cloud, especially when on the go. I don't like how it's embedded in the iTunes app and "app stores".

I hope they ditch Ping, that was just a waste of time, and only added crap to an already over stuffed app.

hahah so true, hated ping and never touched it

I like itunes and how it's set-up now, I hope the new look doesn't totally interfere with the way things used to be done!

I really hope they put some actual effort into this supposed face-lift; the last 6 major versions of iTunes have been more and more of a step backward in terms of usability, plenty of new features sure, but every time something minor is lost to the point that it all adds up into a whole heap of annoying quirks that shouldn't exist.

Why can't I play music videos as sound only, especially if they're in a music playlist or iTunes DJ? I mean who the hell wants a video popping open unexpectedly? Yet there's only the option to put the video in a variety of slightly less obtrusive places, without actually hiding it altogether. I used to be able to have music videos play as audio if they came up in a playlist, or video if I specifically double-clicked them, that was a perfect behaviour, so why did it disappear?

I mean, while in the hell would they get rid of the ability to click the currently playing area to quickly see album or artist? And who thought that round controls on an ugly, not-quite-rectangular mini-player would look good?

I really liked the older rounded player, while I've never stopped using iTunes, I stopped loving it when they messed that one up.

Remember this? Remember how much people whined when it was dropped!

Been wondering if the next version will not just drop the CD icon but also CD burning. Might be part of the tradeoff with the labels for iCloud functionality, particularly with regard to iTunes Match. All the songs would essentially be trapped on devices with the CD loophole gone. 2011 this would not be an issue for most users.

It's Jordan Golson, the new guy. I can tell his articles from those by arn or Eric with almost perfect accuracy. Jordan's style is much more "personal-blog" like, which I don't think fits with this site and the way it's been. I prefer the objective tone, and would prefer more limited interjections of personal references/anecdotes/humor.

Agreed. I'd be reading engadget.com if I wanted his personal, and at times snarky, take on the tech world.

Agreed

iTunes needs more than a "facelift." It was designed for music back in the late 90s (before Apple owned it). Since then Apple has tacked on movies and books, podcasts, apps, & ringtones so I think it's fair to say the iTunes we know today needs to be completely razed to the ground and rebuilt. Let's hope iTunes 11 is more than a tweak.

I was just going to post sumthin similar.

The last time I synced my camera with iTunes and some HD movies came in I really thought it silly managing movies within iPhoto AND iTunes was more than inefficient as I could play the movie in iPhoto but when iTunes couldn't.

Seems some convergence between iTunes and iPhoto may be in order??

Oh, and don't screw it up with a ridiculous skin like on the Lion version of iCal or Address Book.

The fact that you used the word "razed" makes my day.
Bt yeah, iTunes could do with a complete redo.

I just hope iCloud is optional and not mandatory. That'd be an end to my use of iTunes.

Can we please stop the separate app thingy? In general maybe it makes sense to have more than one app, if you are just starting now. Now it doesn't make sense to split one app into 100 apps and it will not remove bloat, because after iTunes went 64 bit cocoa there isn't any. If you have huge library it's whole other problem, because you know it takes time, CPU and RAM to load big library and there is nothing you can do about it.
